Although I took basic at Fort Jackson and AIT at Fort Gordon, they were very similar to this, including the old wooden barracks. Another "smell" I remember is the smell of coal burning in the morning, which permeated the whole base. The old buildings were all heated with coal, and it had a very distinctive smell in the morning. While it was still pitch dark, we fell out for PT and the run, and that coal smell is something I still associate with the early morning.
Winter of '66 in the reception center at Ft. L. Wood. WWII era barracks. Fire watch duties at night. Every other window had to open at least 4", and this was in Feb.
@dover357 I was in those same barracks at reception in '82.We did the fire watch thing also,I was always like what the hell is this for ? Until i found out they used wood stoves during WW II in the barracks. The stoves were gone when I was there but everything else was pretty much the same even the toilets with no walls between them. LOL
To the author of this video, great job, I was in Ft. Leonard Wood Oct. 67 for basic, and saw a picture of one of my friends in the video. The soldier getting a vacination was one of my class mates and wonder if you have any information on that particular person or group he was with. I lost all my infor from that time and looking to get help finding people.
i was there for basic august of 1986 d-2-3..i always remember and hate drill sgt bethune..making us do pushups in the snow until he finished reading his book..haha..brutally cold in the morning and blazingly hot and humid in the afternoon..with tornadoes and lightning strikes to boot,2 twin brothers in our platoon got hit by lightning..
Basic training there late 1973. Got caught in a blizzard on the machine gun range and got frost bite. Reception station was still wood WW2 barracks. I said to myself back then that someday I would look back at it and laugh. I was right.
Combat Engineers. It was hot and humid during the summer and cold as heck during October.
I still have my graduation book and the 45 that came with it. I dont know about everyone else, but in those days the DI's where Hands On. You messed up they you know it !!
@chongo0303 OSUT-Combat Engineers @ FORT LOST IN THE WOODS April-78 i remember an 8ft log we had to duck walk with if you screwed up, today that would be illegal. LAY HOE HEAVE!!!! 12 BO GALOOO
I went through basic there the summer of 1973 . I remember doing push ups on sharp rocks. That did not feel good on my hands !!! I slept in a metal quansette hut.
I remember after a few weeks we were allowed to go to the EM club and drink 3.2 beer. I remember when I had to hold the M-16 out in front of me, and the Drill Sargeant did the same, he said, what's the matter ? Can't keep up with the old man ??? We DID NOT have hand to hand combat back then. Or bayonet training.
I was there for Basic Training in Feb 67. Had my 21st birthday while I was still at the reception center. A couple of my buddies chipped in so I could call my wife who was staying with her parents in Germany.
After Leadership Orientation Course (pre-Basic), I was made a squad leader for the Basic cycle. My squad consisted of everthing from a New York attorney to a couple of guys who were told by a judge to either join the Army or go to jail!
I was there the winter of 1983/84. I was in B-3-3. I was an E-3, and headed for Mother Rucker for Flight School, but it still sucked.I went to the AWOC Course, and ended up flying the AH-1S, and the AH-1MODS in Germany.I remember upon Graduation from Leonard Wood, we were going off post, and there were pictures of fat prostitutes, and contact numbers all over the ceiling of the Station Wagon Taxi that picked us up.
I was there to in july 83 to nov. I think during AIT we used to go to the Star motel. what a dump. I was in c-24.I left there and was stationed in germany
I was there in October-November of 1966 and I recognize several of the men in some of the photos, just don't remember the names anymore. If I remember right I was in F-1-2
I went to Fort Leonard in June 16 1975. I remember the fear of the cotton mouth snakes, anyone remember all those jars with just the heads they had on the shelves.
Thanks, Borntowander. I also had Basic at Fort Leonard Wood in 1967. I was in F-1-3, and our "barracks" were quonset huts. We did PT on a gravel parking lot. Your video brings back lots of memories.
went thru basic and AIT there in1968
