Hi, I had a dislocation since 2010 and I have went to the therapist multiple times. My shoulder is strong, but occasionally when I overthrow a football or go out of range of my shoulder it would partially dislocation. I do not have the excruciating pain as I used to since I work them nearly everyday for nearly 2 years now and the partial dislocations would relocate itself in a matter of seconds, but what can I do to strengthen my shoulder even further to prevent any shoulder subluxations?
This is for people who have recovered from a dislocation and wish to strengthen further. It looks impossible for someone with a shoulder instability. I would dislocate my shoulders if I tried that!
i would agree, ongoing shoulder instability is a very specific problem , and i would not set this drill for that specific issue. that said, the fact this exercise is called a dislocation seems to confuse some people, so, if youtube will let me, im going to change the title
to build your flexibility you may have to start off with shoulder circles (ie visualise a broom handle). ultimately flexibility is a function of genetics, bone arrangement and time spent practising so its possible to get no improvement whatsoever.
no, flexibility is merely the function of your nervous system being trained to allow or not allow a movement to occur. different predispositions may exist in people, but bones are pretty much arranged the same in everyone. its nothing more, nothing less, unless you're talking about contortionists.
My shoulders are incredibly tight, there's no way in hell I could do this exercise with a full range of motion. If I just keep doing this, will I eventually be able to turn my arms backwards like that?
i dislocated my left shoulder on feb,20,2009 skateboarding accident and i seriously need help its been three times that it dislocates by itself but the third time happened yestarday it was diffrent the the other the 2nd one it stayed in like the first time and i couldnt move it so i massaged it and it went back in can someone give me advice on what to do i dnt want to get surgery! plz
it's actually inlocation and exlocation, not dislocation. In for inwards and ex for outwards, but dis means not designed for, and this specifically moves the shoulder through it's intended range of motion.
hi, i'm 6'8 and i have a very stiff back.. i can reach everywhere on my spine, but it takes -alot- of effort and stretching and shoving.. with my height disposition, would this work for me?
i tried this with a hollow iron curtain rod and it's working great, feels amazing after a day at work. i'm a massage therapist, need all the back relief i can get.. which is ironic, lol
thanks again for posting this, i hadn't even known about it prior to yesterday
out of interest, how did you damage your shoulder? I did mine by a good old maximal, unspotted, chest press attempt that went very wrong. only after 2 years does it feel ok
I got injured in the lower back ligaments 4 years ago, ive been misdagnosed and ended up having some muscle spasm all over my back... always having pain in the lower back. Those spasm made me have weird behavior and unbalenced muscle. I developed what it called SIJD and my pelvis position became unballence as well. Recently i saw a specialist that made a correction to the pelvis. (see answer on next post)
So as i was saying... after my pelvis was corrected. It had some kind of chain reaction in my body and i was more likely to have my shoulder dislocated. One day, i was taking my dog out and over-extended my self in a crouch position. While I clipped him to the leach still in that position my elbow DISLOCATED!!! I had it corrected and now im doing some kind of pectoral muscle streching... cause those went tight as the SIJD messed my body. END
dont get too hung up on the title of "dislocations" the idea is not to pull your arm out of your socket, just to get it to the extent of its flexibility. But you are right, there are some people who are so flexible that they can hold their hands and turn their arms through the motion.
Try not to dismiss a particular exercise because your particular problem means you cannot do it. If your shoulder pain/range of motion is such that its too painful, well its back to the basic stuff, move your (unweighted)shoulder gently through as much of a range of motion without any weight or external guidance.
By way of comparison, Squats are a great exercise, but not so good if you have broken your leg.

I tried doing this but I can't..I've never had any injuries or anything so I don't get why I can't do it. Even with a really wide grip : (

i dont know why this video was rated poorly, its a wonderful stretch, and its extremely effective.

i must be missing something, i though a dislocated shoulder was a fairl significant injury, so why isnt he in pain? im confused?
sr19 3 years ago
its just stretching his shoulder joints not actually dislocating them
bioobird 3 years ago
thats the name of the exercise he isn´t actually dislocating his shoulder.
VRJaguarandi 3 years ago
you can understand why the name 'shoulder dislocations' could potentially be misleading. i wonder why they called it that?
sr19 3 years ago
'shoulder dislocation' is just the name of the exercise, confusing, I know :)
antichay 2 years ago
because it is incredibly advanced. I couldn't do this exercise in a million years as I have a weakness in my shoulder from 3 dislocations.

i have a shoulder subluxation and this feels like the exercise i was missing. doing this will definitely increase the healing process

I think I would suggest that you begin to circle your arms backwards without the pole just to see how it feels.
Its hard giving you specific advise as I dont know your particular circumstances. Gentle would be the word.

i think to dislocate your shoulder you need to get your hand closer like holding your fingers

wow, I wish I could

what the heck! is this for people who need help with their shoulders or for anyone who wants to help imrpove shoulder strength?

this is more stretch than strength.
part of the cure for my shoulder and numerous people that ive shown it to. Try it, if you feel pain use something else

bull..cant do that way too much pain
