  • Is it only for anti-submarine warfare? Can it fight against frigates and destroyers?

Does it have strong self defense mechanism? Given the size and speed of this plane, any surface to air missile can easily kill it.

  • @bigbtripathi Just like the P-3, it can shoot any surface vessel.

Most SA missiles can't reach the altitudes it flies at, for the ones that can, that's why there's standoff.

  • cannon fodder

  • winglets????????????

  • asianwholikesplanes they cant. They will fly above carrier fleets at high altitude from ground bases

  • Built like a sack of laundry.

  • What a beautiful plane!

  • how are they going to fit that on a aircraft carrier?

  • The dilemma: Performance demonstration to acquire congressional appropriations; performance demonstration to tell the enemy how it works (and consequently, how to defeat it).

  • Is there any particular reason it's painted green?

  • @pryan37bb it's a protective coating that's applied to the exterior fuselage during/after manufacture. before paint application, the green coating is washed off.

  • @pryan37bb It's a prototype.

  • Cool!! We're making something called a "bail-out door" for this at work!!

  • P-8 poseidon more than meets the eyes. Its a warplane thats just in disguise.

  • useless waste of money

  • Boeing only needs to add raked wingtips and they take airplanes to a whole new level of sexy.

  • The 737 looks great with raked wingtips. Will commercial NG-variants ever be fitted with raked wingtips rather than the conventional winglets?

  • I think if turboprops were a better idea the navy would realize that, because come on, its the US navy.....

  • Anti-Submarine aircraft?? I wonder what this uses as weapon's. Particle Beam weapons? Zap those fuckin sub's right outta existence with a dose of ionized electrons.

  • @ohairy111 All I can remember is that it drops torpedos depth charges and can drop small bombs for land attack and anti ship missles from the wings

  • @ohairy111 ni it uses depth charges torpedos missles it can even drop bombs

  • Still seems like turboprops would be better

  • @bullcurr There's pro's and cons to both. It can stay in the air for 3 days with these engines (with mid-air refuel), which I think was the big decision factor for these engines.

  • Pretty bird.. but I grew up listening to the turbo-props of the P-3 out of NAS Moffett Field... and ended up stealing flight time on Orions when they came to visit NAS North Island !! I wouldn't feel safe doing LONG MarPat on only two engines !

  • Is it P-3 successor ?

  • Yes

  • I don't like the name. remember the movie .. Upside down ship in the water.

  • @jimmydcap lolololololol

  • jimmydcap: the name is appropriate because Poseidon is the god of the seas in Greek mythology. The same god in Roman mythology is Neptunus or Neptune. The current Orion is not related to the seas but its name is after the god of hunting (sub hunter) and its predecessor is the Neptune aircraft. So in terms of names it will go full circle: Neptune - Orion - Poseidon

  • A P-3 can fly all of the following at once: Low, slow, and for a VERY long time with engines 1 and 4 loitered. A 737 based aircraft can only do two of those. The turbofan engines don't like low and slow or they burn lots of fuel. They are better at altitude.... Props work better at lower altitudes. The P-3 will be around until at least 2015, some say even 2019.

  • they from B-737??

  • Doesn't look as good as I thought it would, still, it must be an excellent aircraft, India ordered it, and India buys only the best.

  • I love the use of thrust reverse while the nose gear was still coming down. :D Hehe

  • Don't judge a plane by it's looks.

  • @allamericandude15 Yeah but it`s still a piece of beauty!!!

  • it has thrust reversal at least lol

  • It's an excellent 737NG. What more do you want? It's a high tech machine.

  • @fireengineer Boeing builds more the just planes

  • @yoyoyoyoshua they do they build the Advenger, a helmet, missles, upper stage for a new rocket for NASA, satellites, and bombs

  • I know the P-3 backwards and forwards, but know very little about the 737. Anybody know how this thing is going to handle at the low altitudes routinely flown by the Orion??? That looks like a 757 wing which indicates to me that this thing might handle like a pig when it's low and slow. Am I right? Am I wrong? Somebody help.

  • It's nowhere near as big or bulky as, say, a 747. It should be able to manuever at low altitudes pretty well.

  • From an old P-3B aircrewman...The wing is off of a 737-900 with winglets added. Not worried about the handling but more about the spool up time of the turbofans. One great thing about the P-3 was the almost instant availablity of 20,000HP because of the constant speed props. Just change the pitch angle and pour in more fuel! The plane should give a better ride at low levels because of the "soft" wing. anybody with P-3 time knows how stiff they rode down low.

  • Agreed, but keep in mind this bird (from some of the vids) seems to ride pretty stable too, at high altitudes and close to the ground.

  • It should fly very well at mission altitude. Boeing didn't slack on their homework... they knew what it had to live up to. :)

  • Nice video of a great looking airplane. ThumbsUp

  • wow thats fantastic:) awesome video:) woohoo am the first on to leave a comment:)
