This is nice, but the best version I've heard yet is by The Dale Warland Singers on the album Lux Aurumque. Its more tonally sophisticated, imo. There is something sweeter and more delicate about it than this...
@pisceanqueen1 The Santa Fe Desert Chorale intentionally used darker-sounding vowels to keep a more Russian feel. Both are excellent versions but I don't think I could say one is better than the other, just stylistic differences.
I'm in the Men's Glee Club at the United States Naval Academy, and we're singing this, and I must say it is one of the most glorious pieces of music to sing in cathedral or empty concert hall. It will send shivers down your spine straight to your soul
I think the balance they have is perfect. This song has never been and never will be about the tenors. Performance practice for this song dictates practically a pyramid built with the lower voices the loudest and the higher voices softer (save for the high A; unless you want to KILL your sopranos, dont tell them to sing that quietly). I find this very tastefully done. as cool as it is for us tenors to hit that High A, it isn't about our sound. we contribute, not carry.
Very, very nice. One of the best performances of this work here on YouTube. Glorious acoustics, too, wherever this was recorded. Keep up the good work.
WHOA! I sang this for All-Region this year! It is one of my favorite pieces. (Got 3rd chair... Just throwing that out there) It was just TB when I did it. I do like the SATB. But I'm too fond of the T1 going up on the "spa" part and "a". It gives me chills. I dunno why the soprano doesn't have the same effect on me. Hmm
Yeaaah. Russian songs aren't supposed to be sweet and delicate....

This is sublime. I loved singing this in choir, but we never sounded like this.

I feel like this lacks soul

Someone flipped the gain down when the sopranos come in at about 90 seconds which spoils it for me.

Good work but it isn't the best interpretation for me

The choir I'm in is doing this song, it's beautiful. We have one guy in the entire choir who can get the low D, it's amazing.

Pshhh I wouldn't sing this SATB I would do it saTb (if you don't get the difference, don't ask, you're beyond hope already). More! More!

I'm guessing less soprano less alto more TENOR and less bass?
chaarlietheunicorn 2 years ago
@pbholden satB all the WAY. If you can pull off four ledger lines below the bass staff, then you've earned a name for yourself as a true bass singer.

Superb performance with superb acoustics. Great diction, beautiful balance. Silky smooth soprano sound.
