@somepups I'm 18 years old, and I can tell you M has extermely few 'fans' in this demographic (though she does have a rather strong fanbase of ppl in their 20s and 30s that first discovered her through ray of light). My point is you cannot claim a 16 yr old 'forgot' a singer they were hardly well exposed to or was even relevant to their age group. This generation processes Gaga as very unique and original because they were not alive to witness the 'craziness' of the 80s.

On September 10, 2002, I stayed up late with MTV on because I was curious to see what the channel would do upon the stroke of midnight that would begin September 11, 2002, 9/11's first anniversary. And it’s not that people are forgetting about what was done in the past, it’s that they are slowly dying off and their children who live today are clueless about it. @somepups I'm 18 years old, and I can tell you M has extermely few 'fans' in this demographic (though she does have a rather strong fanbase of ppl in their 20s and 30s that first discovered her through ray of light). My point is you cannot claim a 16 yr old 'forgot' a singer they were hardly well exposed to or was even relevant to their age group. This generation processes Gaga as very unique and original because they were not alive to witness the 'craziness' of the 80s.

I never compared M and Gaga's songs, though I do give M credit for having an amazing catalog (too early to compare Gaga to that) I also never said that madonna isn't relevant (I disagree!), my point was to only state that more of the youth TODAY do not as easily link the two together because we were not alive during M's biggest controversies (I didn't grow up with M's sex book, I grew up doing my gymnastics warm up routine to "Music"!)

@somepups I wouldn't generalize Gaga's fanbase. She has recently been developing quite a following with mature listeners (ppl in their 40s-60s) and, just like Madonna, has a very diverse fanbase (gay, straight, young, old, of all different races). I agree that M has offered nothing but inspiration to Gaga, and I think that is a great thing. Yet, if you visit practically any Madonna vid today on Youtube, you will find people cursing Gaga. You are going to find insulting fans on both bases.

M cannot sit behind a guitar and move an audience on voice and instrument alone. If that Oprah performance was indeed done live, Gaga would clearly not be able to pull it off, as she's a contralto.

My apologies, of course, she certainly can emotionally move an audience of hardcore fans on voice alone (I heard no guitar), I was not moved because her singing does not amaze me, it is usually forced and does not have the raw passion and personality I love to hear. @somepups You shouldn't let the fans dictate whether or not you like the artist (if that were the case- I wouldn't be listening to M today!) In terms of impact, no female currently is topping Madonna, but Gaga comes the closest out of everyone today. Gaga's also very young. I love the music she has released so far, and I think she cannot compare to M because she does not have a big enough catalog yet (30 yrs vs. 4!) , not because M is "untouchable".

I was only 5 when Ray of Light came out, so it kind of passed me in a haze of sound while my mum had it on repeat for like 2 years.
I only really became aware of Madonna with Hung Up. I've caught up now though, 100+ Madge songs on my ipod, and only 10 by Gaga (as it should be.)
All Madonna fans can proudly hold up RoL in the face of screaming Gaga fans.
