  • It's quite sad to see how ignorant and close minded Orson is in real life. He's my favorite author and I think his books are genius with diverse and complex stories/characters, but clearly he's got some seriously deluded personal views. I guarantee this test will not work on a large majority of people. There are a lot of people out there who have religious beliefs but wouldn't get upset if someone challenged them no matter what because they know what they believe works for them.

  • This guy has good insight.

  • I agree with him that if people just focused on the things that matter so that societies co exist in peace. we would all be better off. The comment above, that truth matters more than people getting along is utterly useless. when the truth is different for every religion on the planet, and for every human there is a different version of reality in their own minds created by their experiences and personal indoctrination.

  • Hey, Orson: Just because you lose your cool whenever somebody starts questioning your Mormon beliefs, that doesn't mean the rest of the world reacts similarly when answering questions about their own religion. Mormons are famously defensive, and you're one of the prickliest of the bunch. Project much?

  • @ChinoBlanco Mormons, like dozens of other faiths throughout history, have been severely persecuted for their faith. It is in their teachings, their hymns and even their modern culture. Of which I refer to LDS missionaries serving around the world. The higher power of your choosing - be it Fate, God, Nature or the Force - will seek to test the mettle of that faith. Scott Card's not incorrect.

  • @tamyrlin1986 I'm sorry, but getting made fun of on the internet is not extremely persecuted. I'm sure your familiar with the Holocaust?

  • @kurumako See: Missouri History, Mormon Extermination. See: Joseph Smith, death of. See: pretty much most of what happened to the LDS Pioneers before they made it Salt Lake, UT. I would say these instances constitute persecution in an extreme manner. Just because it doesn't happen currently does not mean it didn't happen. See: Holocaust, Nazi Germany.

  • @tamyrlin1986 I have a hard time believing anything purported by the founders of Mormonism. Of course they'll say anything to gain sympathy and support. And secondly if that's what it takes to validate your beliefs then that's pretty sad.

  • @kurumako So don't believe them. Check American History, starting with Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion and the spiritual revival period in 19th cent. New York state. Look into what authenticated historians have researched and what they say. Prove me wrong. Do the research. Use whatever legitimate sources you wish. Any Holocaust historian will tell you to do the same for their subject. The facts will add up, in at least the coldest sense. Merry Christmas.

  • @tamyrlin1986 Your conviction is truly heartwarming, but I'll pass. I can't allow mormonism to waste any more of my time. It's already wasted enough of the world's time.

  • I think Card is using the word "religion" differently than he would use the word "spirituality". His point is that people who dislike "religion" often have something that is a religion for them. I do think it is fairly true that people have things they think others should believe, or else be punished (from do not murder to do not pollute). I 'm not sure if everyone gets literally angry when their beliefs, but adapt your religion be truly tolerant, not angry, was the main point here.

  • Cards pejorative definition of the word religion is incorrect and renders it meaningless.

  • @zoxovox in your opinion.

  • @zoxovox Definition of religion, and i quote: "Details of belief as taught or discussed"

  • Orson (a good writer of a few books) gets part of this right but a lot wrong. Calling anything a religion, because everyone has one according to card, which makes people angry when you don't agree with them is ridiculous and should be in reality a process for the revelation of strong opinions not religion. Additionally altering one's religious / opinionated views in order to get along in society is frankly disturbing when in reality the truth is what matters not going along to get along.

  • @zoxovox Shall we use the word "belief" instead. Any "belief" is fueled by the salvation meme, so it is not unique to religion, it is endemic throughout our species.

If only people related to people & their environment and not perceived motive.
