This country didn't open it's arms to anybody and everybody until the last 30 or 40 years. But it's still true that the level of pitching in Ruth's day was as good or better than today. There are pitching records from that era that still stand. Ruth played in the dead ball era. He hit more homers in a season than some teams.
It is not necessarily true that pitching was better then. This does not change the fact that the black players who were in the negro leagues didn't face ruth. There were many great players in the negro leagues that could have gave ruth fits. I dont see how the pitching could be worse today, there are much more players to pool from from all over the world. I still would like to know who all these great black pitchers are that Ruth missed out on, and as far as that goes, all the great black American pitchers that Bonds has faced. Black baseball players are predominately fielders. They wouldn't have shut down Ruth. With so many more teams today than in Ruth's time, a lot of pitchers today wouldn't have made the cut back then. They'd have been in the minor league if they'd had one.
About half of those guys you mentioned probably wouldn't have played in the negro leagues either because they're not from the United States. I was referring to black American pitchers. All that aside, when Ruth played there weren't near as many teams in the big leagues which means the overall quality of pitching was higher.

Bonds didn't ruin history, he just put his own mark on it, blemished though it may be. Ruth was a 50-60 HR/yr hitter who missed a lot of time, while Aaron was a 40 HR/yr hitter who played consistently for 25 years. Bonds was a jacked up roid-monster who got better after his prime. Put an asterisk next to him if you want, but he's still one of the greatest there ever was. The comparison ends there, in my opinion.

And the more teams you have playing, less talented pitchers get to play. How hard is that to figure out? No, Ruth didn't play against players from all over the world. This country didn't open it's arms to anybody and everybody until the last 30 or 40 years. But it's still true that the level of pitching in Ruth's day was as good or better than today. There are pitching records from that era that still stand. Ruth played in the dead ball era. He hit more homers in a season than some teams.

It is not necessarily true that pitching was better then. This does not change the fact that the black players who were in the negro leagues didn't face ruth. There were many great players in the negro leagues that could have gave ruth fits. I dont see how the pitching could be worse today, there are much more players to pool from from all over the world. Maybe the hitters weren't as good back then.

From those comments you obviously don't know what your talkign about....It's not just about black pitchers were talking about every other country in the world....A guy like Santana (the best pitcher in the game) wouldn't have even been able to pitch in the majors back when Ruth played. The more people you can pick from, the more talented of guys you are going to find. How hard is it for you to realize that??????

I still would like to know who all these great black pitchers are that Ruth missed out on, and as far as that goes, all the great black American pitchers that Bonds has faced. Black baseball players are predominately fielders. They wouldn't have shut down Ruth. With so many more teams today than in Ruth's time, a lot of pitchers today wouldn't have made the cut back then. They'd have been in the minor league if they'd had one.

About half of those guys you mentioned probably wouldn't have played in the negro leagues either because they're not from the United States. I was referring to black American pitchers. All that aside, when Ruth played there weren't near as many teams in the big leagues which means the overall quality of pitching was higher.

CONT. Besides Bob Gibson and Page here are some other Great NON-WHITE pitchers that could easily give Ruth Fits. Vida Blue, Dave Stewart, Pedro Martinez, J. Santana, Dontrell Willis, CC Sabathia, Jose Rijo, Don Newcombe, Lee Smith, JR Richard, Dwight Gooden, Ferguson Jenkins, Jose Guzman, D. Martinez, Rivera, and Blue Moon Odom to just name the ones off the top of my head. I'm sure I am missing a ton more. However, I do have to agree with you about one thing.Ruth was a better pitcher than Bonds

Sorry if 5 paragraphs is a bit much for you, I will try to cut this as short as possible so you don't pass out....The reason you never heard of the great black pitchers back when Babe played is because they were playing down the road in the Negro Leagues. They didn't cover those games and barely acknowleged they were going on in those racist days... If you don't think they were any great pitchers back then that were of the opposite color than you are very narrow minded...

Yeah I read what you wrote and it about put me to sleep. If you have that much to say you need to write a book. Name all those great black pitchers that would've shut down Ruth in your book and I'll buy it. You might mention in the book that Ruth was a pretty good pitcher the first 5 years he played. Couldn't say much about Bonds' pitching stats.

Hank Aaron had 4000 more at bats than Babe Ruth! Babe Ruth had a lifetime .348 batting average. Look at Aaron and Bonds stats. They don't measure up to Babe Ruth. I'm sorry!

Babe had the best players around him his whole career, do you know what the does for the pitches you get to see??.I agree that Babe Ruth had amazing stats, but no way was he a better baseball player than Bonds. Bonds could do it all he had over 40 hrs and 40 Sb's in one season and is the only 500 hr player/ 500 sb player ever. Plus, if Babe played in today's game he would be no better than a John Kruk type player..

Name me some great black pitchers besides Bob Gibson and Satchell Paige. I want to hear their names. Especially from Ruth's time. Doing away with the color barrier wouldn't have slowed Ruth down any. In fact, if Ruth would've played in the negro league, they would've probably losr count of how many homeruns he hit!

CONT BEL.- What people also forget is look at the players that have been around Bonds his career. The best players to ever protect him in the lineup his whole career have been Jeff Kent and maybe Bobby Bonilla....WOW! If Kent makes the Hall of Fame it's because he had Bonds on base all of the time making him get better pitches to hit. Look at Ruth's protection in the lineup he had as a Yankee (crazy talent)....

People who say that they should erase all of what Bonds has done if he is proven of taking steroids, the clear, or whatever are ignorant fools in my opinion and have no idea how hard it is to do what he is doing. Not to mention if 80 or 90 percent of players were taking some sort of performance enhancing drug (like it has been said in Canseco's Book) then wasn't he playing on a level playing field anyway???

CONTINUED-3,000! That is insane..Yeah your right it's just because he took performance enhancing drugs. I played Div 2 baseball in college and knew players that were taking different types of steroids in the offseason and sure they got stronger faster than you would taking creatine or maybe HMB, but it didn't make them get drafted.

Barrys always been a great player I KNOW THAT. no doubt barry would have been a hall of famer had his career ended by about 98. but after that he cheated.. he fucking CHEATED. "has he flunked a drug test?" No. But if u look at his body size and stats from 22-27 then compare those things to when he was 35-40 and can honestly say u dont think he cheated.. then god have mercy on ur soul bc it couldnt be more obvious. he is about to make the biggest record in pro sports insignificant. Is there visual evidence that barry took steroids? yes. Is there scientific evidence that would make oneself 100% sure that he did? No. I don't doubt that barry took steroids, but I am lacking infallible proof. Could he had put on that muscle as he got older? Maybe. It is common for athletes to bulk up as they get older, look at michael jordan, shaq, and others.

Shaq only started to decline a couple of years ago. He was 350 on the lakers and dominating the league. I am not saying that barry didnt take steroids, I am only saying that more proof is needed before we can be 100% sure.

And Ruth was a pitcher the first 5 seasons he played which means he didn't play in many games early in his career. You take away the first 5 seasons Bonds played and see where he's at! Also, when Ruth played, nobody was even close to 714 homeruns. He didn't have a number to shoot for. The next closest HR hitter didn't even have 300 homeruns!

babe ruth couldn't necessarily help it, but it does raise a question if he would have hit quite as many had he had to face some of the top talents in the negro leagues. Bonds hasn't failed a test yet has he? I can not be sure whether he did or not, seeing that there is no scientific evidence of him actually taking steroids. He is still a legend whether he took steroids or not. Assuming he did take steroids, at his pace he probably would have hit at least 600 home runs by now.

seriously, what great black pitchers has barry faced as opposed to the ones ruth would have had to face had there been no color barrier? as far as no evidence for roids, all i need to look at is barrys crazy change in body size (and hat size) along with the unrealistic skyrocket in his BA HRS and SLG% after about age 35... makes no sense. he cheated. i agree tho, he was great b4 he decided to be a steroid taking pussy

Barry has faced top talent from not only blacks from america, but other non-white pitchers as well that would not have been allowed to compete in the babe ruth era. Babe was a great player, but the fact still remains that he didn't face some of the best out there. Thats like larry bird playing in a league without blacks, his stats would be inflated, but he is still one of the all time greats.

if u consider the fact that the babe played in a league with half as many teams as there are today cancels out the argument that he didnt have to play against blacks. take out the bottom 50% of todays players and create about 16 teams out of the top 50% and thats the competition ruth faced

That doesn't mean that ruth had more competition just because there were less teams. A lot of the players today are from other countries. There may have been less teams, but there was a much smaller pool also. It wasn't just no blacks, he didn't have to face hispanics and others too.
