in my opinion, this isn't as great as Lu Siqing's version. Forgive me, I'm biased, I'm Chinese myself. However, the thing is, Lu captures the niceties and style of the piece better--the small accents and whatnot that constitute the Chinese style.
I attended the lecture given by one of two composers of "Butterfly Lovers", Chen Gang, in the 1970's in San Francisco. He admirably revealed that the theme music of this piece was taken from a regional opera. Nothing wrong with that. Practically all great composers of the past borrowed.
After hearing all the fine violinists perform this piece on YouTube, it's easy for me, another violinist, to say Akiko Suvanai and Takako Nishizaki were superior to all others.
I seriously do not care about high art or whatever aesthetic imperfections there are in this performance. True art should be appreciated not just on the physical level, but salso on the abstract and meta-physical level as well.
If you choose to let the aesthetic qualities get in your way of appreciating the true spirit of this wonderful expression, it's your loss.
@lostpebble I posted things I heard as a question. If you call them blemishes and if there were 1 then I might be critical, but for 6 ... I respect others' comment and make no comments on them. Asking people to write in a way to your liking seems imposing. There are no-so-favorable comments but you didn't comment on them except 1. What's up? Didn't I say it's my preference? Preference is subjective. Why do I need to repeat others favorable comments? Let's relax & enjoy this concerto :-)
For those who is overly keen in being critical about blemishes of this performance, I ask that they also use their "acute ears" to pick points that she out performed other artists on this number. Well, if they can't, then there are other reasons for them being critical.
@korming did I say "interesting"? (neutral tone), But u interpreted it as "strange". What I said is a fact. If she needs sheet music, it's indicative of something. What do u all think about p1 2:28, p1 5:28, p2 0:24, p2 5:59, p3 3:30, p3 5:17? Am I picky? You bet. Marsplasticwoman has pointed out a couple. It's all about personal preference.
People who think it is strange for a professional to have sheets before her, and that it makes her less of a pro are obviously no professionals themselves.
It simply means that she hasn't played it as often as Lu has. Maybe Lu doesn't have sheets before him because he has played it so often for years that he is just automatically repeating the motions.
@korming You've made a bold statement.. It is generally a bad practice to have sheets in front of the soloist.
It dosn't take that many playing to be able to recall a piece from the unconsious.
When she have the sheets in front of her it generally means she hasn't touched the piece for at least the past few month or so and she needs the 'safety blanket' but it is extremely bad because it draws you back in focusing on your control of expressions.
I think her version is better than Lu's. He very fact that she is female means that she is better equipped to express this piece. I actually got goosebumps listening to her playing.
I don't think the orchestra matches up to Ms. Suwanai's interpretation. Why is the "story" being told in such a rushed fashion?
I still prefer Takako Nishizaki's 1978 recording with the Nagoya Philharmonic. Yes, it doesn't have the same speed, but T. Nishizaki's articulation draws out the raw emotion.
I don't think things like "amount of emotion" can be determined. There's only preference. Akiko's version is beautiful, but I prefer Lu Siqing's. I think Akiko plays too fast, and although she moves around a lot and swings her body back and forth, the sound of her violin just doesn't inspire as much emotion in me. The acoustics of this auditorium are also much better than the auditorium in which Lu Siqing played, so she does have an advantage. I also think his bowing is more smooth.

Interesting ... a prof performing with music sheets in front of her. Check out Lu si-qing with Philharmonic Wien at the Golden Hall of Vienna. I found Lu's performance is more expressive.
@variousweetie I disagree. Listen again, you 'll find Lu is a much more refined artist. His interpretation has no rough edges as some other artist would. Just banging loud sound and showing lots of stength would not necessary make you an artist!
i think he does. this piece is an auditory translation of the original tale, and the story itself is supposed to be very romantic and sweet. i feel lu did a much better job portraying the nuances of chinese music.
Really beautiful playing :) Saw her play at BBC Proms last night - Sarasate - Carmen / Ravel -Tzigane!! Really classy, elegant playing, never overdone, wonderful poise and control, absolutely ravishing 'bel canto' sound. Her playing seems to have a 'hidden' beauty - completely unselfconscious - not a trace of artifice anywhere - she's not 'trying' to sound beautiful, so we hear the fire inherent in the music. Absolutely 'herself' when she plays. Oh and that Strad is just incredible heard live 3>
The whole music tells a sad love story, which is the chinese version of "Romeo and Juliet".
If you know more about the story, you will find that Akiko shows the emotion inside the story so well that she was like the "Zhu Yingtai",who is the heroine in the story.
This Japanese girl played better than loads of local Chinese!
