  • I was fortunate enough to be in Toronto and able to attend this very important funeral. When Steven's crystal clear voice rang out and lifted up Jack's soul into the ether, he sang this song it and drew us all closer together for sharing this moment and touched everyone so deeply. Rest in peace Jack and thank you Steven for singing this and moving all of us a little closer together.

  • Just awesomeness ..

  • This made me cry.

  • I saw him live,... it was amazing. I have his album signed.

  • This breaks me. Steven Page singing this as a eulogy. Just him singing this. It breaks me.

  • Takes alot of balls go go up there and play that song!

  • One of the most moving pieces ever, this is as good as the original. Steven did Mr. Cohen's song proud.

  • Very moving, indeed. Personally, kd Lang's version, moves me the most. Cohen's is a classic, no doubt. I adore Steven Pages voice, and always have.. I miss Jack every day. We must move forward with his message, and others before Jack, who inspired us to come together, united, for the people. #Occupy is one way. Volunteering, talking to people on the streets, whatever you choose, just DO something... Jack would be proud. <3 Let's Rise Up!! Peace.

  • Beautiful, simply beautiful.

  • I just wanted to say, again, this is the best version of this song I've heard...and I think Mr. Page should record it so I can buy it on iTunes and listen to it all the time. :)

  • this reminds me what a remarkable song this is. a stunningly unique rendition by page and a very poignant, personal tribute to a man, a canadian, who will truly missed in so many ways. jack layton had the singular, magical gift of inspiration and we owe it to him to carry on.

  • This is perfect. I love Steven Page and this song...great, great, great!

  • merci beaucoup, thank you what an amazing man, as a full grown man i've never cried so much over anything.

  • Merci :-)

  • paroles de cette chanson

    s.v.p.

  • @jfaoekdf

J'ai ajouté les paroles dans la description.

  • It's a very well done version of the song. You can tell Steven Page is trying not to break down during the song. RIP Mr. Layton.

  • It was amazing watching it. Jack was such an amazing person, and the song is so amazing. I'm glad they picked Steven Page to sing it. RIP Jack Layton, you will be missed. Everybody stay loving hopeful and optimistic for Jack and Canada.

  • :o

  • Kevin Hearn and Steven Page together again :)

  • I keep wanting to click the box that CBC has on screen, looks like a You Tube ad... Great song though.

  • I just saw Steven last night. It was the first concert I went to that was all acoustic and it was amazing. It was the second time that I have ever met him and he such a nice guy.

  • Beautiful song and very well done by Mr. Page. Also, I have nothing but respect for Mr. Layton. He was a gift to our country and will be sadly missed. But I found this choice of song awkward if not inappropriate for a funeral.

  • @clementinedaleau Think of it as a celebration of life, instead of a funeral.

  • @clementinedaleau It was stated that this was what Jack was listening to when he passed away. Not at all inappropriate.

  • Little known fact: k.d lang's version of this song was playing in Mr Layton's room on the morning of his passing. This is why they had Steven Page sing it at the funeral. Brings tears to my eyes every time.

  • Page did such a good job with this song. RIP Jack...

  • Posting this is very good, and appreciated, even though I was lucky enough to view most of this ceremony on the CBC site. And I believe Mr. Layton would have appreciated it, also.

  • your legacy will live on forever, thanks jack

  • Am I a bad person for hoping that Kevin Hearn playing piano will result in a Steven Page/BNL reunion?

  • @martinrschneid Thought the exact same thing :/

  • I'd have preferred Ed Robertson, but this was beautiful.

  • Steven took this song to a new level. I've played it and played it.

  • I love this version that Page sings ... it is the best

  • THANK YOU, STEVEN. Thank you for this very beautiful rendition. My own very broken Hallelujah is consoled and my soul warmed by your song. You are a authentic Canadian treasure. Thanks.

  • Absolutely loved it. They could just play this recording at my funeral.

  • Well, IMO it was the BEST version of the song EVER...I finally understood & felt the words of the song and it was so very moving. Cohen...never IMO does justice to any song, he has a terrible voice.

  • those who are being critical of this song are not taking it in context,at this point of the service,it was devastating and Jack asked for him to sing it,so chill,he isn't releasing it as a single,it was a funeral for God's sake

  • well jennb752 7 Steven just lost a good friend and probably had a hard time keeping it together ...I think he did a wonderful job and what a nice tribute to a good friend....I think your coke and booze comments are mean spirited and uncalled for ....Well done Steven

  • He butchered the song!! Horrible, awful...Not good at all! I think all the coke and booze has messed up his voice. He wasn't even singing the song he was speaking it!! Very painful to listen to...Just my opinion!

  • I didn't think anybody could do better singing this song than Jeff Buckley but Steven Page did an absolutely amazing job. I had shivers running down my spine because it was so good.

  • You did good Mr. Page, thank you.

  • Had me crying for the duration, just amazing.

  • Also, is that Kevin on Piano??

  • @ZeonMagna Yep :)

  • @ZeonMagna ..yes it is

  • I think most everyone should listen to the Cohen version before you judge this. It is completely different from Rufus or Jeff...

  • @ZeonMagna You should also check out KD Lang's version one of the best-GORD. gordspoetryfactory

  • not my favorite singer, i think they could have gotten someone better but still, fabulous song choice. RIP jack :(

  • Thanks RIP Jack.

  • And the incomparable Kevin Fox on cello.

Also, it seemed to me that having to follow the eulogies of Jack's two children might have taken a bit of a toll on Steven Page. Early on he was fighting to control his voice quite noticeably and I feel he never really "got it going" until he takes the microphone from the stand and finally becomes a "performer" and not a "eulogist" - and if you watch carefully when Kevin Fox comes in on harmony for the first time you can see Steven relax. I loved this.

  • And the incomparable Kevin Fox on cello.

  • Steven could learn something about phrasing from Rufus Wainwright. Total butchery of a Canadian masterpiece.

  • I linked this to a friend who loves this song and even they went 'wow'. Steven did a breath taking performance.

  • Absolutely beautiful rendition.........So heartfelt and real.......Great job Steven....RIP Mr. Layton.......You were an exceptional human being........

  • I am a HUGE Steven Page fan. So maybe I hyped it up so much in my own head. I did not enjoy his rendition.

  • great song, great artist..

    great leader in Layton.

    RIP.

    Thanks for the upload
