I like the idea of combing different styles, and I love this song. But... and I hate to say it... it wasn't a great performance from either one of them. There were a lot of bum notes in there. No disrespect intended, but this was kind of stinky. Sorry.
You must remember this was for charity. And it was important because mixing these different styles involved also attracting a wider audience, which in the end, it was all about. Totally love this performance. RIP Mr. Pavarotti.
Ok, Simon LeBon is a New Wave rock star. Luciano Pavaratti was a classical tenor. Mixing the two is like having Penne all'arrabbiata and Bangers and Mash on the same plate. Two excellent dishes, but NOT together. FAIL
Pavarotti cant really sing in english.......I didnt like the combination at all....I love this song so much and have listened to so many different versions but this one lacks definitely in synchronization
Those drawing comparisons with Bono's (not very challeging) vocal performance of "Miss Sarajevo" can't posess much musical insight. Pavarotti sings an antiphon - a totally different arrangement to Bono (you don't hear him warbelling "There is a time for Christmas trees" - it's an OPERATIC solo). It sounded great because the two voices performed differently. Unfortunately for this song, Pav and Simon were expected to synch up! Challenging (for both) and probably underrehearsed (unlike Miss S).
respect for simon!!! i would like to remember that simon sings for the first time in italian. i wanted to see luciano sings in englisch ordinary world
I dont really like the arrangments of this track. I have to say Le Bon wrote it and for that fact we have to pay the ultimate respect to him for achieving this. Pavarotti adds a dimension no 'popular music singer' could achieve by the virtue of the fact that he is master of singing and Le Bon is a popstar - just like Bono is just a poop star sorry pop star. Le Bon is much better than Bono but Pavarotti is the master.
holy shit. :) I have to say that way to go Simon. That was terrible. Are the two singers using the same key? Well I can tell you that Luciano is using the right key but Simon has lost his key. If you compare this performance to... For example Miss Sarajevo (Luciano, Bono, The Edge and Brian Eno).. well there's a QUITE big difference. But I have to say that there' a quite big difference between U2 and Duran Duran.
I'm painting a target on my head here, but...It's not Le Bon struggling. Luci (bless 'im) is quite obviously unfamilair with the song he's been asked to sing. Blame the producers. I actually think the result is quite amazing towards the end of the song (after a ricketty start).
If Pavarotti invited Simon and was his friend , who are all of you to judge him ... this was for a good cause , i love pavarotti and i love duran duran , peace love and wisdom.
I couldn't wait to listen to this most beautiful song in the 90's! Luciano Pavarotti added to its depth, and gave it a new dimension which, thanks to his masterful voice, brought it to magnificence status!
My comment can only reflect what others here with equally good judgement in music have already posted. It must have been a real treat for them to perform together as it was for us to observe, and no disrespect to Simon Le Bon and Duran Duran, but the Maestro Luciano Pavarotti truly does put his own brand on this beautiful song as well. His GOD given gift that he used well will never be forgotten. RIP

Who would have thought that Simon Lebon could have held his own against/with Pavarotti? Not this 30 year Duranie. But he did. Brill.
