Wow Alain Vanzo!!! Wow. Very different interpretation, so gentle, so tender, so refined. Very exciting. Perhaps a better tenor on record than in person? Having never seen Kraus live it is a guess of a comparison.
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo. He may be not the best , to compare to Karusi in technical aspects, but I must say his voice is perfectly suitable for this Aria. Beautiful
Dear kharma999 you have very good taste for voices. Simoneau is simply perfect in this air, what a gorgeous voice and musical sensitivity...What a delight to listen to him !
The frasing of this air is extremely difficult , subtle & elegant. To me is one of the jewells of the vocal literature, I adore it. Did you hear the duo NADIR -ZURGA from the same opera? Is heavenly beautifull...
Kievest-Who gave you the right to have the superb taste to appreciate this gem of gems. I never realized the following so well deserved that the great Leopold Simoneau had. Bravo to you,and especially for this jewel-one of my favourites on you tube.
i adore the kraus version. this is great too though. Although kraus has such control, and the high notes are effortless I sometimes here some nastiness at the end of his big moments, some screeching sounds. Anyone else hear that?
Notice though how Kraus does the opening phrases in one breath. Simoneau needs two!
Simoneau wasn't reknowned for his breath control so much as he was for his absolute purity and nobility of voice, and nuanced interpretations of music across styles.
rajscreedon69-Does this imply that Kraus and his superb rendition was but one breath better than Simoneau. I don't think that Leopold would be insulted by this.
Thank you so much for posting this ! There needed to be a video of Simoneau singing this aria on Youtube, I think it's just sublime. There are a lot of versions by Alfredo Kraus, which are wonderful too, but I think this is just as good... as good as it gets.
El mismisimo Alfredo Kraus lo aplaudiria, ambos estan en el cielo.- Don Leopold es genial en esta aria del enorme Bizet

If you analyze the tessitura (and the dynamics demanded) of the character Nadir, you'll find out that this is the PERFECT voice for the role.

Omg.....
Wonderful!!!!!!!

This is without doubt the best version, due to the enonciation, and control of
Simoneau's own native tongue, in conjuction with the orchestra......

One of the finest recordings of this most haunting aria. Simoneau was among the very best, with Vanzo, Krause and d'Arkor. how rhapsodic!

Hi there, listen to Alain Vanzo, 1963 Amsterdam, simply superior to me and in the right key
