  • i recently rediscovered this studio version after listening to the Holland songs mostly on the "in concert" album, but the voices on this are sublime. i can't get over the backing vocals, from the way they come in suddenly near the end of the second verse, till the end of the first half. any way of isolating the back track to hear them more clearly? backing vocals on some of the other Holland tracks are incredible too, some of the very best.

  • Thank God that Mike Love had nothing to do with this song!

  • is all the bass on Holland a moog bass?

  • Jack Rieley is still something of a controversial figure, but some of the BB's best stuff were those with his collaborations--this is only one of them.

  • @crucivirgin Thank you for thinking of me. I've been sober for 28 days! Hey, didn't they make a movie with that title about staying sober? Sandra Bullock I believe. Anyway, thank you again I really appreciate it :) By the way are you "across the pond"? I don't know if they still say that in Britain or not.

  • too beautiful to behold

  • Thank you for this gift, Carl.

  • Thank you for this gift, Carl.

  • A treat for me. In the middle of an alcoholic relapse. this is helping me pull out of it, I hope. Thanks, Michael

  • Oh Yea!

  • I love this song... When i was 6 years old, I´m listening it from old tapes of my parents... Beautiful harmony of all instruments and voices... :)

  • Carl Wilson kept the Beach Boys alive when Brian Wilson retreated from the world to bed.

  • The son of Carl W. says at the begining of the song: Hi!

I really love this song and the Holland album, Beach Boys forever!!!

  • @BigSheleighlie its his daughter, but all good.

  • @MrNeotheist no, its Jonah, his son.

  • @SmileySmileAM From rolling stone magazine December 1974 "My greatest duet was when my daughter Wendy says Hi on the Trader" Carl wilson.

  • @MrNeotheist on the liner notes for holland it's carl's son justyn

  • @SmileySmileAM

nope, it was his son saying it to his daughter :-)

whatever, to me the song is only complete when I hear that "hi".

and complete it is, as is the whole Holland album !!

  • @nedcro Then Carl was drunk or high in the printed quote..

  • I use Holland to help illustrate that the Beach Boys were more than surfers to my musically dumb friends. Not that it's better than Pet Sounds or even Sunflower but this album has strong arty tendencies to it that are pulled off flawlessly and illustrate a band that could stretch out and do whatever they wanted.

  • @sonicdeath10 Dennis Wilson was the only one that ACTUALLY surfed, you can add that to your reportoire of facts to try to enlighten your musically dumb friends lol

  • Best way to hear albums during the 80's: Old vinyl player with decent speakers. Your room, blue curtains drawn on a Sunday, bright sun filtering through their weave. Slight crackle of old vinyl. This way you can feel the grooves properly.

I spent my share of time with this album in such a fashion. Works well.

  • Love this song and the album and the band and it's all good. Smoothe man, smooothe.

  • i used 2 use this track in the '70's 2 go 2 sleep with beautiful thanks you tube cos i lost a lot o my vinyl back in the day lol

  • i used 2 use this track in the '70's 2 go 2 sleep with beautiful

  • it's every empire ever. Spanish, British, Roman.... Brilliant song

  • The Trader refers to, IMHO, the British Empire ...

  • @BB45s Yes, it's about empire, colonization and that sort of thing. This is the result of the band catching up with Brian's late-60's efforts to remain topical (such as his environment / health food songs from SMiLE). It was a strong moment for Carl, for sure.

  • Has anyone ever listened to the words to this song?

  • @looniespoons Sure have, lots and lots of times brings a tear to my eye

  • no, no one EVER has

  • Once again the Beach Boys have come up on top with this album

  • This is quite simply stunning..no more to say..stunning

    Jim

  • My favorite Carl tune (co-written with Jack Rieley)

  • @RoyFive I agree with you, my fav Carl W tune also!!

  • Their last meaningful album...and a dandy

  • @KetchKent That it was!

  • Reason to live, reason to continue, reason to go on...

  • BRILLIANT under rated song, I doubt people understand this song, Carl was so brilliant, miss him terribly.

  • @HeartInThe60s Trader civilized all he saw. Great tune. Carl was the anchor.

  • I HOPE people really get the full meaning of the lyrics, true depth. The first part shows that we are small in our selflessness, part two shows the real beauty of the human condition, what is true, and powerful. If our spices HOPES to continue

we must get back on the HUMAN track. I hope we all find our paradise, that

we give more back than we take, I dream forward

  • @072golf ...yeah Jack Reiley was magical with his lyrics. He took this LP to a whole greater level. One of their best.

  • dear sir, i love it soooooo much,

  • I always loved the bass on this song- I never realized until recently Dennis Wilson played Moog bass on this.

  • carl was the real stud of the beach boys........

  • Vocal, instrumental, and lyrical perfection resulting in another highlight from "Holland", another feather in Brother Carl's musical cap, one of the By God best Beach Boy tunes, damofino I Love This Song! Thanks to : YT for the space, caponazgul for the caring and sharing of the upload, and to Carl and the rest of The BOYS thanks for stayin' thanks for playin', and to think some people thought that they were only playing out the string in the 70's, to them: SHAME ON YOU AND SAT IT AIN'T SO,R O S

  • How can you get any more amazing than the 1st 2 seconds of this one?!

  • Great tune....great photo to go with it.

  • Definately Carl Wilson, one of his best!!!

  • I thought Blonde Chaplin sang lead vocals for this? I don't recognize Wilsons timbre at all.

  • @themandamanable Definitely Carl. His voice had matured considerably since Girl Don't Tell Me, the first song on which he sang lead back in 1965. In fact he sings quite a few songs on the Holland album, including the two Dennis wrote.

  • Carl Wilson forever! My favorite Beach boy song of the era.....

  • Eexcuse me!

I can't find link of this song. Give somebody download link!

  • i remember playing this on the beach in Ensenada back during a college scuba club trip, and declaring to somebody that it was one of the top 50 songs ever produced - and maybe it is!

  • My favorite Carl Wilson vocal. A great era before endless summer ended the group as serious artists.

  • Also gotta love FEEL FLOWS......

  • Perhaps my favorite Carl wilson song, along with Long Promised Road and I Wish For you.

Dig the backdrop harmonies here !!

    John Hunter Phillips

  • fn love this song
