Ian Gillian is great, in his own right. He was amazing with Deep Purple and he inspired another amazing vocalist by the name of Eric Adams from Manowar.
Of course Dio is untouchable, but this isn't Dio, it's Gillian doing it his way. Nothing wrong with that.
My favorite era of Dio was his time in Rainbow, 1976 -1979.
Wish he could have played with Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow once again, like he did in Heaven and Hell with Tony Iommi... his death was a true loss for metal music, felt deeply by lifelong fans the world over.
@clayopalstar There is nothing idiotic. I don't care if its Ian who is singing but the magic is gone without DIO. I read the description but still I want to listen to DIO so your reply is a bit out of place. Don't be a hater!
Ian Gillian was so much better as the singer of Black Sabbath. Dio sucked. I hate it that he died, and I hate it when anyone dies. He just didnt know when to stfu and get over his voice and let the band jam out. Ian was perfect for Black Sabbath! Dio made the band seem so rediculous. Ian was why it was soo cool to see Rob Halford sub for ozzy. Heavy Metal goes with Heavy Metal. Dio was a wanna be. He sang good, but never had a song fit for his vocals.
@celticwitan you are seriously the biggest dumbass when it comes to Rock. Rainbow - Sensitive to light
Dio is one of the highest... Also Eric Martin, Mike Matijevic, the guy of Europe too, gillan doesnt...
@mnunezper You're so wrong when you say DIo sings higher than Gillan... Shit man... I Love both vocals,, but Dio isn't that good in high notes you should send to me DIo - Gypsy, that's a High Dio.. GIllan's Range is a 4 octave... and you say he can't sing higher? ok, DIo of course can... Dio's low notes is better than Gillan!!! contrary to what you're saying... Ok, nowadays dio is better, Gillan lose a lot his voice.. But 70-90 gillan's voice is better than DIo... Range, power, etc..
@felipetordek haha dude scream is not singing, gillan can scream and do falsetto or some mix beetween head and falsetto or chest screaming, but he cant sing high. Is like that song "love is all", the tesitura is way high than gillans songs, realize that gillan sings almost in the middle and then do the high screams but he doesnt sing around the high C or C5. Is like this song "heaven and hell" gillan CANT sing it properly... also "she's gone - steelheart" gillan would never sing that high...
haha yeah dude I have listen episode six, I told u, I am a Gillan fan. But in that songs the top note is around F4, Dio's top note is around C5 ... (without screams)
That angra song, that vocal technique is pretty easy, is kind of mix voice and is not that hard. Bring notes as Dio, in the high register, thats hard, nobody sings like Dio or Mercury ... Besides Angra, Rhapsody and plenty of power metal bands, all of them sings with a similar technique and all of them go that high ...
@felipetordek haha im baritone and Im learning to sing, I dont try to sing high cause Im still learning other stuff. But my teacher can sing with different techniques and he can do those things, seeing a professional rock singer doing that screams, high notes and singing in those styles, you can realize how to do them and also which f them is harder to do. I tell you, Dios technique is hard. A technique that is easy is the technique of Axel Rose, Sting, Ozzy perhaps
Ian has always been a great voice but is not suitable one for this song in my opinion. Besides apart from the screams, here his voice doesn't sound well. DIO is THE VOICE AND THE SOUL OF THIS EPIC SONG!!!
This is probably going to get loads of bad replies from Dio fans but I really prefer this version to Dio's. This is just my opinion, of course I love both though. But in my opinion Dio was never as good as Ian who was never as good as Ozzy. They are all fucking amazing to be honest though.
Man this rules! Most of the stuff I've heard Ian sing from the Dio era is absolutely horrible, but this is great! The screams really add to the weight of the song. I know alot of Sabbath fans hate the Born Again lp but I've always loved it. I've always thought that this lp, Masters of Reality and Dehumanizer was their heaviest material. I was dissapointed when Ian left because I thought he had alot to offer the band but I did get to see Purple in 85 and that was awesome as well.
Born Again is one of my favorite Sabbath albums hands down. I remember when I first got the cassette as the CD was hard to find in the summer of 1994 and my best friend and I said his dad was right that Born Again was a once in a lifetime kick ass union of Ian Gillan and Sabbath. Then this show from Worcester (in my native Mass) in November, 1983 was recorded when I was 7. If I had been older in 1983, I would have seen this tour in a blink of an eye.
Back in the the early and middle 80's I would play the beggining of Disturbing the Priest for Halloween, moving my Dad's speakers outside to scare the shit out of the trick or treaters!
Believe it or not, Born Again is the one effort/release that Sabbath "would rather forget"-or (at least) "distance themselves from." Like yourself, I, TOO, LOVE Born Again, as well as their self-tited debut release (of course!), and the Mob Rules. Speaking of Sabbath, what's your opinion of the Dio-era Sabbath "new name" Heaven and Hell-and their debut release?
Dio the warlock is amazing and owns this song. Gillan is amazing and totally did awesome on this cover though i do have to admit i like dio's version better
I think Ian Gillan is a fabulous singer. One of the greatest of all times. However, it was (!) even more controlled and smoother in the early seventies. Here I think he is great during some stages and the screaming fantastic. But the opening is somewhat lacking the gear he had about ten yrs before. Like many other singers who deteriorates by age. But all of them Dio, Ozzy and Gillan are just great performers. And of a classic era. I salute them all and this song. Great pictures as well
A discussion about the quality of Gillan's work here is totally irrelevant. Obviously he cannot sing like Dio, but it's very interesting to hear a legend like Gillan singing this classic song. Sabbath's Born Again is a masterpiece, and we all should be always grateful for being possible to hear this album!
Gillan could not sing high notes like Dio and Martin and almost any other singer in Sabbath. He has said he was the worst singer in Sabbath and that was true if you listen those songs from Ozzy and Dio era. His voice is not just high, of course he can scream but pure singing is something else.Although he is legend and he has done great job with Purple.
Do you know HOW MANY times, mostly in reference to Deep Purple, his name is printed as G I L L I A N? I've got an imported vinyl release of "Knocking at Your Back Door"/A-side and "Gypsy's Kiss"/B-side that spells it that way.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Gillian's voice is cracking and he's trashing the lyrics. Ironically, Dio and Gillian do great as a duet on Smoke on the Water, but this is disturbing.
i guess dio is better for the verse....because he has a greater emotianal attachment to the lines...and ian had some serious throat problems back then...
but come on, he can't beat it when Gillan screams HEEEAAAAVEN AND HEEEEELLLLL!!!
Man, Ozzy will always be the starter of the heavy metal movement.. Dio did start out doin 50's dooshizzle afterall.. doing it well mind you.. But I'm a huge fan of Dio, Rainbow, Elf, and all of Dio's work.. I'd have to say, vocally, its totally Ian, Ozzy, Dio, then Jesus..with satan at a pitiful, measly, dead last.
Ian messed it up with "taker", but still did a great job

Ozzy is a better singer? What do you base that on? You're fucking retarded.

Back in the the early and middle 80's I would play the beggining of Disturbing the Priest for Halloween, moving my Dad's speakers outside to scare the shit out of the trick or treaters!
michaels2boys 2 years ago 5
Believe it or not, Born Again is the one effort/release that Sabbath "would rather forget"-or (at least) "distance themselves from." Like yourself, I, TOO, LOVE Born Again, as well as their self-tited debut release (of course!), and the Mob Rules. Speaking of Sabbath, what's your opinion of the Dio-era Sabbath "new name" Heaven and Hell-and their debut release?

Gillan does a damn find job doing this song. Probably his best vocal performance out of all the Ozzy/Dio-Era tracks he did vocals on during the tour.

Ok Gillan just raped the music dead.
its disturbing. he should definately have stayed with that other band.

i really..dont like his voice.. /sigh.. oh well Dio and Ozzy ROCK tho.. meh

Gillan could not sing high notes like Dio and Martin and almost any other singer in Sabbath. He has said he was the worst singer in Sabbath and that was true if you listen those songs from Ozzy and Dio era. His voice is not just high, of course he can scream but pure singing is something else.Although he is legend and he has done great job with Purple.
sakke72 2 years ago
Do you know HOW MANY times, mostly in reference to Deep Purple, his name is printed as G I L L I A N? I've got an imported vinyl release of "Knocking at Your Back Door"/A-side and "Gypsy's Kiss"/B-side that spells it that way.

Gillian's voice is cracking and he's trashing the lyrics. Ironically, Dio and Gillian do great as a duet on Smoke on the Water, but this is disturbing.
Ev105 2 years ago
Hey Buddy. It's GILLAN, not Gillian.
I love this Gillan version.
Hear the scream at the chorus... Amazing..!
demiangillan 2 years ago 8
Smoke On the water is much easier song to sing than this one.
sakke72 2 years ago 7
i guess dio is better for the verse....because he has a greater emotianal attachment to the lines...and ian had some serious throat problems back then...
but come on, he can't beat it when Gillan screams HEEEAAAAVEN AND HEEEEELLLLL!!!

simply the best screamer ever!!!
