Sweet truck dude! Why did you get smaller tires? why not just get stronger power steering?
Im actually buying a 79 K10 4x4 tonight. Its got a 3" lift on new 33's, 350 w/ edelbrock 4 brl, intake, and dual exhaust. We have about 2" of snow so far today and Im so stoked. It will be fun playing in the snow tonight haha.
Thanks! Appreciate your help. Trying to decide if it'd be a good car for my 16 yr old son. With the cost to get it running and gas at $3.50, it might be a deal breaker.
@SignorRavelli Well I know the paint cost about two grand, the carb was probably 200 - 300 bucks maybe, and the tires were about 400. My uncle got the carb and my dad put the paint and tires on it, it was originally rollin on 35's but without power steering it was too hard to turn in tight places.
@ccubsfan94 Yea that was a bad call on my part, I didn't have any other music to go with them so I threw that in there to make it last the video. But I have to disagree with you on the "shitty switchfoot" part.
Hey nice truck is she a project truck for you if yes its in fairly nice condition the interior needs it the most in my thoughts and by the way where did you get the push bar on the front i have a 72 chevy 4x4 and wouid like one like that what brand and where to find one thanks bud keep them old chevys alive!
@Hlindeen Yea it was kindof a project, I just didn't have enough money to put gas in it and fix it at the same time. I sold it to my dad and he's planing on fixing it up. The push bar is called House of Steel, I'm not sure where they got it but the people I got the truck from put it on.
When it comes to 4x4's or any truck for that mattter, It all depends on what you plan on doing with it, and how much money you want to spend on maintenance and repairs.
IFS fronts ride nicer, but are harder on tire wear. Straight axles handle heavy loads (like snow plows) better, and don't "eat" front tires up like IFS trucks do. When I have the choice, I go straight axle every time.
Also, there were different option "Packages" that Chevy had for their trucks.
-From "bare" to "loaded" is as follows:
- Custom Deluxe (basic truck)
- Cheyenne (middle package)
- Silverado (fully loaded)
My first truck was just like yours. It was a 1979 K10 Cheyenne, short box step-side.
350 motor with TH350 auto tranny.
Started out as a full-time 4x4 and I put a kit in the transfer case and added lockouts to make it a part-time truck. I picked up 2 to 3 mpg highway with the kit!
When it comes to the C/K SERIES of pickups that Chevy built, here's the skinny...
C = 2 wheel drive
K = 4 wheel drive
In 1987, they used R & V in place of C & K. Who knows why - no clue. Perhaps because that was the year they started producing the EFI 350 engines and then the "old school" 1973-1987 Chevy body was replaced by the fully redesigned ones in 1988.
you cant tell by looking at it, a 383 stroker uses the same smallblock as a 305 or 350. its all in the piston / rod throw or (stroke) the distance the piston travels up and down. the stroke is all in the crank shaft and thats what incresses cubic inch displacement from 350 c.i. to 383 c.i.
That may be for others but my C10 is four wheel drive and it has a solid front axle with manual locking hubs. If you want the specs I can get them for you.
Ummm... No... Go look it up. C10s are 2 wheel drive, 5 lug trucks with independent front suspension. K10s are 4 wheel drive, 6 lug trucks, with a solid front axle. Don't believe me? Ask ANYONE who knows these trucks. Just because Cheyenne starts with a C, does not = C10. My GMC says Sierra 10. Does that mean it's an S10? No. Same with the newer trucks. 2WD Chevy 1/2/3500s are C series. 4WD 1/2/3500s are K series.
I'm just trying to help you. A lot of people make that mistake.
Well, not too sure on that part. My title says C10 and K10 4x4, and I do think it's a six lug. Confusing I'll have to look into it. Anyway technically it's four wheel but literally it two because the front hubs are shot so it doesn't engage. So it kinda is both a C/K10, that's what I could call it.
Well look at your wheels- you have pictures in the slide show. You have six lug nuts.
But yeah, Superwinch lockouts suck. Go with Mile Marker and WARN. If it's marked as a C10 on your title, you may be getting cheaper insurance... I don't know.
Ok, I found out today that it originally was a Full time four wheel drive, but a guy before me put manual locking hubs on it. It also says Cheyenne 10 on the side of the truck, not sure if that means it is a C10. On my title it says the model is C10 the description is K100, I am confused with all this do you know what it means?
All- well, most, trucks of this vintage came with manual locking hubs, which doesn't affect anything. It's just the way it was back then. Like I said before, the package on the truck doesn't determine the platform it's on. C10/20/30 and K10/20/30 are the platforms. Packages are added onto that platform, such as Cheyenne.
Your truck is titled wrong if it's C10, as any C truck is 2 wheel drive with independent front suspension.
As far as full time four wheel drive is concerned, you're talking about the NP203 transfer case. That is or may have been in your truck at some point. The way it was built was it has a differential in the center that allows the front and rear axles to operate at different speeds if need be, but also had part time four wheel drive, where it would lock that differential, so that front and rear axles operate at the same speed at all times- just like the diff or a locker in an axle.
For ride quality, independent front suspension is miles better than a solid axle... As far as offroad performance, it depends on what you're wanting. If you want to do everything, or just things that require articulation- solid axle is the way to go. If you're building a desert truck, IFS is typically better because of stability and better shock absorption.
@offroadingmachine007 tell ur brother thats he aint so smart , anyone knows that a strait axle holds so much more strength than that ifs shit its ok but not stonger than a strait
Yea it's somewhere around that range, but for me it's just fine. It's kinda tall for me but nothing that I can't get into, I probably wouldn't put anything bigger on it myself. Glad ya like it.
I got it from my uncle and he said it's about a 3-4 inch lift, it use to have 30" mudders on it hence the lift. When it did have the mudders on it, it sat about 5" higher then it does now. He use to race it and it would kick trucks all up and down the street.
how high was the lift
thats perfect lift!

10 = 1/2 ton
20 = 3/4 ton
30 = 1 ton
Therefore, a K-10 would be a 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.
