  • I have starved myself for days on end and lift weights and the result? I'm more muscular and more defined than I have ever been. (strength increased). My body has not "cannibalized" my muscle tissue. "Grazing" doesn't work for me. I gained 12-15 lbs gross doing that. It's not all about calories either, but the type of nutrients you take in when you do re-feed. And, it takes a surprisingly small amount of glucose to restore depleted reserves. I'm more muscular than my friends who eat more cals.

  • Exactly why no one read about DietOramy diet regime plan? I was randomly hitting Google and became aware of it - I must say it is actually the very first diet system plan that I've tried using that does not cause me to feel always hungry, and I am nevertheless losing bodyweight.

  • Fasting will eventually slow your metabolism, usually occurring after your body has spent most of your fat reserves. Bu skipping meals is not fasting! I am under the belief that most overweight people, are not necessarily overweight for the food that they eat, but the volume of food that they eat. Most people eat to much, past the point of what their bodies require. We as a nation need to control our food consumption. Eat little meals meals 4-5 times a day. And skip meals from time to time.

  • when you fast you don't do it for a long time it you can fast for 24 hours drinking only water one day won't kill you and the won't start attacking until nutrains and protiens begin to drop so a few days of detoxing is actully fine, you should look on both side here the good and the bad in every sistuation there to both

    I sleep all day and I use to have so much energy.. now its just sleep.

  • You are oversimplifying facts here, fasting is one of the most powerfull tools for weight loss and detox if done correctly.

    btw, you dont look so fit yourself so I wouldn't take your advice as something trustworthy, as Paul Chek says, dont get your health advice from people who are not willing to take their shirt off :P

For, our bodies are designed to go days on end without food if it has to. The body will retain what muscle it needs in order to survive, by hunting, gathering, or escaping predators.   • I think these "truths" are a little incorrect on this video. Fat plays its role in your body as an energy storage and when you consume less energy than what you use, the first thing your body does is turning to the fat. Also fasting has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years and it has been proven to have lots of beneficial outcomes in one's general health. I do agree that starvation still is not the way to go if you want to loose wieght.

  • I am speaking from my experience only I am 6'2 and weighed 280 when I started a fasting diet of water and juice. I had a lot and I mean a lot of fat on my body. I am now 185 pounds and I feel I have the same amount of muscle as I did before the fast diet. I now eat healthy and excursive daily to maintain my weight. I take plenty of fiber and have regular bowel movements. I do not know if I have done any permeant damage to myself but feel fine, though I have not seen a doctor. I took me 5 month

  • It's great to be cautious, yes, but don't discourage fasting. It has been practised for millenia as a way to cleanse and purify the body and give your digestive system a good rest, as well as lose any extra body fat. If you do it smartly, ie. resume a healthier diet and exercise regimen post-fast to maintain the weight you lost, fasting can be very beneficial. You will not screw up your metabolism!

  • Your comments are just wrong, body doesn't see fat as gold! Are you a spin doctor or something? Body does not use muscle as energy source until fat is gone, and taking from your face size, are you healthy enough to make this claims?

  • Look, I'm not trying to be an ass but I do want to say that you are wrong. When you starve yourself, your body will enter starvation mode. Starvation Mode has 2 processes. The first process is burning fat. Your body will need energy and nutrients to replenish your muscles and it will get this by EATING YOUR FAT FIRST. Once your body eats all of it's fats, then it will enter the second stage, burning muscle. This stage is bad because your body eats itself to death. The first stage is fine.

  • When I say Im never hungry when i fast its cuz I feel so good using my own bodyfat as fuel its how nature intended it. And when ur connected to your roots you feel really good. When I use to believe the fat loss hype and eat every 3 hours I was always hungry and felt like crap. fasting is great and I did not lose any muscle mass at all..Just make sure you lift on the days you are not fasting and you will get an added pump from the extra food and increased hormones like insulin and growth factor

  • I fast 2 days ina row from 10pm to 6pm then I have a day slightly above metabolic rate in cals and do full body weight training with little rest between sets on that day. Ive done this for a year now and lost 78 lbs and went from 30% bf to 11% with great muscle mass. Every 3 to 4 months I do simple diet for a month just below my BMR in cals and get rid of the fasting just to reset my matabolism. then I start all over again. Works like a charm. I love fasting because I'm never hungry

  • Almost all of the food in America has many chemicals in it that is unnatural and unhealthy for the human body. When my body feels a little off because I felt like eating a lot of junk food I would go on a 1 day water fast to clean out my system. People who have never fast before shouldnt talk about what fasting is about unless they tried it. You can read all the books in the world on how to drive a car but cant be a top driver until you have drove the car.

  • It takes a lot to starve yourself. If you usually have a good diet then it is beneficial to fast (occasionally) for a couple of days or even weeks the body has fats to use. You only starve when your body has no fat left. People eat too much these days and the American diet is a disgrace! It is causing hundreds of deaths every year. Some people could do with a little fasting in my opinion!

  • WRONG. Fat is stored energy and the body knows this. The body doesn't attack muscle until sugar and fats stores are basically depleted. Calorie reduction, i.e. "staying hungry" has also been proven to increase longevity. It turns on a "survival gene".

  • The narrator is dead wrong. A fat cell has 3500 calories per pound whereas muscle has only 500 calories per pound. The body knows that the fat cells have more energy per pound.

    In fact when you fast the body flushes out all the bad dead cells and tissue and you can actually build muscle as well.

  • It should be noted that the Atkins Diet is actually a shortcut to the same effects of a water-only fast (ketosis). The Atkins diet is not good for your liver, though. But, the point is, in the case of either, you lost fat, primarily, and not this large amount of muscle you're talking about. You actually feel MORE energetic after getting over the 3 day hump. But I will emphasize again, WATER ONLY.

  • If you are water fasting, your body goes into ketosis after 3 days and switches from burning a high percentage of muscle, to burning a very small amount of it while burning a very large percentage of fat. The mistake people make is trying to cheat by ingesting something other than water, such as juice, which prevents ketosis from happening.   • I lost 100 pounds in six months by eating 1500-1800 calories of *healthy* food per day every day. Healthy food has so few calories, I often have to make myself eat more (occasionally junk food)...thus, I am never hungry and have no cravings.

    This is the only diet that everyone must follow to live heathily for the rest of their lives.

    BTW: I didn't increase exercising. Healthy food isn't expensive. For women: 1200 to 1500 cal/day.

  • I did research. I fasted. It's great! You just have to learn how a fast works and what happens and why. Pehaps you haven't read enough to come across the word "ketosis". Some muscle is used in the beginning and then muscle and vitamins are conserved. Also, one cannot just start eating normal after a fast. There is a correct way to break a fast.

  • I did google it. He's on board with most medical doctors. But, not on board with people who enjoy preventing disease and general ill health before it happens. Fasting is one of the healthies things you can do for yourself. As with anything, there are exceptions, i.e. true starvation, abuse of fasting by anorexics... Be smart - look it up. Research both sides, then try it. See if you don't feel amazing!!!!

    Can you please link me to the studies. In the short term (ie. before 21 days) I was only aware of the thermic effect constituting a decrease in metabolic rate. Obviously attributing weight loss to the thermic effect of food is completely stupid, and only a dipshit would make the claim given that it requires that you retain more net calories, ie. Fat people have FASTER metabolisms on average due to the amount of food they eat -- yet they are still fat due to caloric surplus.

I have 2 low a % of body fat, am underweight, have not had a menstrual cycle in 7 months, shrunken breasts, and have stored a little fat in a pouch on my tummy. I had no idea what I was doing. It is not about how much you eat, but what you eat. Teenagers need about 2,200 calories a day just for growth. I have so many questions!

  • I went through starvation mode, about 5 years ago, Before the age of 18. It was hell and it changed my life forever, Plus im a diabetic. Those 2 problems dont go good together trust me lol. Iam beter now, but im never going to be the same again.(my health, my looks and much more). Im a athlete but im not pro, I could of been but thats a long story. Starvation mode hit me so hard...   • your body does burn muscle but it also burns fat, and more fat weight then muscle. people with a lower bmi, except athlets, also have a lower % body fat. meaning that their % of lean muscle has INCREASED.

    the best reason to fast though is for its other benifits. it helps equalize your body uses insulin, which will help you loose weight when your not fasting.

    also, look into C.R.O.N., for decades it has been shown that reducing your calories can somewhat dramatically lengthen your life.

  • You lose muscle and internal organ mass when you do the freekin fast wrong. You can really injure yourself if you break it wrong as well. Juice fasting is much safer, but it must be fresh made, not bottled. The "lemonade diet" goes back about 100 years and is also much safer and easier than water fasting.

    It's all about "food enzymes" found only in raw foods, but the mainstream doesn't want us knowing about food enzymes cause they make a lot more money selling brand name foods which have none.

  • I have a friend that weighed over 200 lbs...She didn't eat anything for 40 days, she drank juice and water..She lost a ton of weight, about 50lbs.Now she eats normally, she isn't really on like a typical diet,the occasionaly mcdonalds,sometimes eating breakfast sometimes not.You get the point. And she isn't really gaining weight she just stays the weight she is.Sure starving yourself obviously isnt healthy, but you do lose weight you may lose muscle and water as well but her reaults were amazing

  • Your claim that fasting is unhealthy is speculative and probably untrue. Its funny you mention evolution in the sidebar. Consider this fact: paleolithic people very frequently fast yet are invariably lean.  6 meals a day is not a natural eating pattern and probably unhealthy. How do you know that healthful processes (e.g. autophagy, detox) don't occur during a fast or even that a fast metabolism is invariably good? You don't. Your making oversimplifying assumptions.

    The point I want to make is that your interpretation of the facts is an oversimplification. There would be a lot less confusion about health if we admitted how little we understand health. Too many people like to play expert, but no one is an expert.

    If 6 meals a day works for you great. But you shouldn't tell people that fasting is never a good idea. Studies are starting to show positive benefits to 'intermittent fasting'. Google it

  • Sean, I love this video! But, I will speak up here as well...as someone who leads nutrition classes 3 nights a week here in Dothan, I always push this one statement: YOU HAVE TO EAT TO LOSE FAT.   • I find it hard to believe that when fasting properly the body would attack its own muscles. Why are our bodies storing fat in the first place? Evolution has created this ability for the body to prepare for bad times when there isn't enough food to cover our energy needs. It would make absolutely no sense for the body to store all that fat for the bad days and when the bad days actually come it decides to go for the muscles for energy.

  • Your major organs (brain, heart, etc) can't use stored fat for the energy they need, they can only use glucose, which is what carbs break down into thru digestion. Since you are starving yourself and not supplying your brain with glucose, your body has another survival trick. It creates its own glucose.

  • The brain uses ketone bodies as a main source of energy during fasting. Same goes with heart. They don't need glucose.

    Quoting Wikipedia: "The brain, in particular, relies heavily on ketone bodies as a substrate for lipid synthesis and for energy during times of reduced food intake."

  • Homiostasis, your body likes things the same.

    It can deal with small changes over time, that can result in BIG changes.... but if you shock it with a BIG change (ie super low cal) it goes into self preservation mode and will hang on to all the energy it can.

    Find balance in what you do, something maintainable for the long haul, not a fad.

  • Proper Juice Feasting is an excellent way to nourish your body while loosing weight. I would never juice feast just to loose weight, but that is one of the effects. By juice feasting, I am referring to drinking a gallon or more of nutrient dense, fresh juice made of dark, leafy greens, veggies & fruits, plus optional super foods like algae. Also, check out Fasting & Eating for Health by Joel Fuhrman. This book offers concrete facts on fasting. U offer some valid points, but there is more 2 know.

It's so yummy and gives me so much energy because most of the energy we get from food we eat is used up in digestion of that very food. Juice requires no energy to digest.

  • Great video Sean! I completely agree with you. I have been very unsuccessful with past weight loss attempts due to consuming low calories. At the beginning of this past April, I went up to a 1700 calorie diet, worked out more...I eat all the time now, with smaller portions, I think about 6-7 times a day, and I've been losing very steadily since.

  • Glad you are doing so well now...I think more people should take in more fruits, veggies and grains.... it would be better than weight loss pills and doctor visits...

  • @seansymons come on, you significantly lose weight, start burning the fat reserves after the 2nd week. Do you know many people having will to live on water for 14 - 21 days?

    And yes, you can gain weight afterwards; from my experience not the starvation process is the hardest. Should consider diet restrictions afterwards (vegan diet, only natural, raw food for the same period time.

    Concluding do it for other purposes - detoxification of body and mind.

    grains? really? that comment makes me doubt your knowledge (sorry). why the **** should we eat more grains?!?!?! we should NOT eat more grains - we should eat less grains. grains are not a natural part of a human diet. they were invented by man and are the first processed food (unless you eat them with hull completely intact etc which almost noone does). screw grains. eat mostly veggies, legumes, some fruits and some meats.
