I agree with you 100%. One thing I like about being a witch is getting the opportunity to be creative with both my altar and my rituals. Honestly, I believe it's more effective if it comes from the heart! :)
I don't have a definitive way I set up my altar, I just set it up the way I feel it should be. For instance, I don't have a cauldron or a beezum (sp?) or incense on my altar, but the power is still very potent and the presence of the deities are very much there.
There will always be people who try to say things in a religion have to be a certain way for you to be in that religion. Even with Wiccans and witches. And I make a distinction between Wiccans and witches because not all witches are Wiccan and not all Wiccan are witches.
I agree with you. I have a large altar plus some smal ones in every room in my house.
Even though I'm from a Caribbean culture, I feel atracted to Easter & Euroean gods & Goddess so I have Asian, African, Native American, Celtic, Egypsian, Indian, Greeks, Wiccan & of course Catholic items on different places. It is what I admire & respect about different traditions. I do follow my own intuition when I'm decorating my altar so follow your intuition and you'll never be wrong.
Love your thoughts on this. It's all about you and connecting with the Spirit in any way that gets you there, at least I have always felt that way. Why would I set up an alter in a way that pleases someone else? Because someone wrote it in a book and other people told me to read it? Bah! im kinda a balance person, so like one side has to have this amount of things and the other has to have the same amount. that kinda calls to me with the whole duality thing or the whole balance between masculine and feminine, you know? its not a belief thing i just think that an altar that has the elements in a circle around the pentacle, two matching candles, and a God and Goddess representation just simply looks cool! ive seen altars that are the acception though... haha

One of the reasons I do not adhere hardfast to Wicca is 'cuz I set up my altar based on the 4 elements and tiered from bottom to top (earth, water, fire, & air) & in Wicca there are 'rules' about altar set up you have to follow to the letter or else everyone goes into a tiffy. Wicca is not a "do what you want to, no rules" religion, believe it or not. Sure, you're altar is yours and you can do what you want with that, but there are certain specifics that make Wicca, Wicca, and without them, you're not Wiccan.
Did I say that makes you Wiccan? I don't believe I did. I said that is one of the really only SET rule. You can make Wicca a lot of things, it really does custom fit to who you are. What works for others doesn't work for some so they do what they feel. WIcca isn't just for people who can afford to go buy things, so if you cant afford something bend it to your needs and get creative. You can find most of what you need in nature and make it whatever you desire and require.

This is a great message. In most books you will see the most common way to set up an altar or the divisions of the altar such as Goddess-left, God-right and both-center. I do follow these sections but I feel certain items will tell me where they go and not the other way around. One of the reasons I love praticing Wicca is beacuse everyone can make it their own way, do what you wish with your altar, believe in what you want to believe in.
