I know what you're talking about, but I've heard that as a lame excuse too often.

It's one thing to play a fast song faster, but it just doesn't work with a groovy song.

They should realize HOW they're playing by now, after 30 years, so in my view it's just a thing of... them not knowing what they're doing wrong.

They might not care they play it that way, that's fine, but to me, also as a musician, the right speed is important.
