After several tail infections, I'm seriously considering the tail amputation for my bulldog. Question for you: do they remove just the skin surrounding the tail that creates the "pocket" or do the actually dock the tip if the tail in addition to removing the skin? And what what the cost? Any info is much appreciated.
@malo408 It depends on the severity of the tail situation. Chumlee's entire tail was removed including some of the tail bone. Then they had to stretch the skin to sew it shut. Chum's tail was curved very deeply so they had to take it all. It cost us around $2500, and we had to visit 3 vets before we found someone who would perform the surgery. Make sure you find an experienced vet that you trust! I would highly recommend the surgery! Chumlee is so much happier now!
He's doing very well! The scariest part was that he couldn't walk that night because of the anesthesia. He was running around the next day (it was hard to keep him calm). Now 7 months later, his hair has finally grown back and he is doing great. It was definitely worth it! No more itchy, sore, and smelly tail! I hope everything works out for you and your puppy.
