  • i think it doesn't work for me. I have longer arms and when i put them under like the video shows, my arm is not stretched and i don't feel the relieve that i was looking for. But thanks anyway :)

  • @504aldo - I have clients who have this problem. Try sitting on a pillow or a folded up towel to give you more height - and then put your hand way under you between the pillow/towel and whatever you're sitting on.

  • I love this video! My upper back felt so good. Better than a massage. Thank you.

  • Great advice!

  • WOW!!! it amazing how this simple stretch immediately helped with my upper back pain, it gets so bad that i just wanna break down and cry sometimes & no pain medicine helps... sometimes the simplest things help the most... thanks so much for posting!!!

  • @aidanhaters - the simplest things often work the best. Glad to help.

  • @askthebodyworker i figured that i had this pain because i hold my head wrong but im very tall so its dificult for me to see everythin while im holding it right, i think i need to get used to it :P but thanx man you realy helped me this pain was torturing me for a month nonstop...

  • Very good video... EXACTLY why I have such severe neck pain upper back pain

  • I have chronic and constant upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and some times strong tension headaches..... Can this exercises help me? I was researching and found something called upper cross syndrome! does it sound like it?

  • @TheYaom I've found this stretch to be good for most upper back and shoulder related problems. make sure that you do it gently and regularly for a few days and you'll see the difference.

  • @askthebodyworker Another question.... Can computers be the cause of so many tension headaches, upper back pain, muscle imbalances?

  • For the last year I've had excruciating pain in my back between my shoulder blades, only after sleeping for a few hours. In the last week it's started becoming very painful even during the day. I tried these stretches and the results are amazing. I'd been trying to stretch my upper back to relieve the pain, never once did stretching the front of my neck occur to me. I'm going to keep doing these stretches and see if I can get rid of the pain completely! Thank you!!!!

  • @threejoneses - Rockin'! Great news!!

  • Thanks for this. It makes complete sense. My problem is that I feel like I can't straighten my back completely even when I try because there's a "hump" below my neck where it starts so my neck is slightly forward. I've tried lots of exercise but it doesn't seem to help and the pain in my shoulders and neck is now constant and there are "cracking" sounds. How do I get it straighter?

  • @Chocolateluvr1987 Also, one obvious problem I see with vertical alignment is that women have breasts, which are obviously difficult to "vertically align" completely. I feel like they kind of pull you forward and make your posture worse, unfortunately.

  • @Chocolateluvr1987 - well, yes and no. My experience has been that unless the woman's breasts are out of proportion to her frame (a problem with the modern obsession with surgical enhancement), a properly aligned body (especially the ribs) has no trouble supporting the weight and dimension of breasts.

  • @askthebodyworker Thanks! I will have a look around online. It's just hard to know what's "good".

And that's interesting about the breasts, because everyone I know with larger breasts (natural or unnatural) has similar problems.

  • @Chocolateluvr1987 - This sounds like you've had this problem for a while if you have that kind of postural distortion. This stretch will help, and it sounds like you could use the services of a really good postural bodyworker - a massage therapist who specializes in posture and alignment issues - to help you realign your back and spine. I do this sort of thing, but the odds of you living in my area are slim. Let me know if you need help finding one.

  • @Chocolateluvr1987

you could try falun gong, the first exercise stretches your head, because you push it straight upwards, check out falun gong exercise 1

  • i have back pains right where my first two vertabrae start, and the pain feels like i'm continuously tearing whatever muscle is there. when doing this exercise, i've noticed that when i stretch the left side of my neck, the muscles in that part of my neck are so much tighter than the other side. a way you can understand the difference, is that when i stretch the looser side of my neck (right side), there is no feeling of any stretching compared to the other side of my neck. i hope this can help.

  • @joedamillio - Yes, absolutely it can hel[p- if you stretch the tighter side more than the looser side. And gently - very gently. If your stretching hurts, you're going too hard.

  • @askthebodyworker thanks for the reply. and the stretching doesn't hurt, it just... really stretches :P. i'll leave another comment here in about a week or two and tell you how i'm doing. this pain started almost two years ago and has gotten very bad about 10 months ago or so. it felt like bricks being stacked on my back, then it became that tearing feeling i said in my last comment. i can't stand for a long period of time (couple hours at the very most) because the pain becomes that unbearable.

  • Dood you have totally saved my life lol. I have had this back pain for over a week and it has been killing me. Thank you :D

  • @sabrinakirkinson You're welcome!

  • I think the reason I have upper back pain is from playing world of Warcraft for four almost five years sitting at my computer. I also hurt it playing football but this helped a little

  • You look like John Locke! Thanks for the tip.

  • i now know why my upper back is hurting...its my sitting posture ..i always sit with my head leaning towards the front and walk the same way too....thanks soo much i will try this exercise

  • great exercise! i hope it'll work!

  • I'm 16, and the area just to the left of my right shoulder blade has been killing me. I don't know if it's from bad posture from sitting down at school all day or what. Someone help?

  • @WeDaBestUK2K It's likely a combination of the two, with my money leaning more heavily toward the terrible chairs at school. This exercise should help.

  • @WeDaBestUK2K its likely you have a pinched nerve, but it thought the same thing i got 2 MRIs and i have 2 compressed disk and a deformed vertebra it in my lower back but causes my upper back muscles to hurt all day

  • Thanks these neck stretches and better posture helped my upper back pain instantly!

  • oh my this actuually works!! :))))

  • thanks alot

thats exactly what i am looking for

  • Hi there.... want to do this daily..Hope this helps my upper back pain... I always have this upper back pain and that even affects my breathing... :(

  • I woke up with a sharp pain in my lower left back. I had my girlfriend massage it, and then my upper back started hurting later. this morning I woke up with what feels like a knot on my upper right back, and it's absolutely killing me, hurts very very bad. I tried this excursive and although it did relax me a little, I still have a lot of pain there. I wonder if there's something else I can do.

  • @beeaar01 sometimes these things take a while to work themselves through. My suggestion is to keep doing the exercise for a few days, several times a day. Gently.

  • @askthebodyworker Hi, great vid. cheers. i'm 29 yrs old and started getting arthritis from the age of 24. anyway, i've now noticed that when i stand up straight, my head tilts forward and i can't straighten it/ align it with my back. but i didn't know bad posture could cause this, thanks for letting us know. i should have worked on keeping my neck straight yrs ago and not get comfortable letting it go forward without realising the consequences

  • i get pain between the shoulderblades after work, not from sititng down but from repetetive lifting (nothing heavy usually only 4-5 kilos) but after 6-7-8 hours of this my upper back and shoulders get really tired and my posture gets quite bad. would this stretching help me or do i need to do more strengthening exercises for my upper back

  • @Mayistabyou12 wow - yes, the stretching would help, but honestly, doing that sort of work everyday would be difficult on your system under almost any circumstances. With the info you've given, I'd say that you should be doing both stretching and exercises - and perhaps looking for another job.

  • thanks. it helped a lot!

  • @caucasianrugs - You're very welcome!

  • Thank you sooo much! I had a big swim meet coming up and my shoulder (a crucial muscle for swim) was killing me. This helped out a lot.

  • Just loved that "then you leannnnn away from it "GENTLY" :D:D:D

  • This is awesome! I have scoliosis and I did this exercise in a dreaded moment of pain and it gave me instant relief! I am sooo happy i now know this!

  • hi i am experiencing a lot of pain at the back of my neck and my upper back; on both side about the area where i can feel myy ribs. as a result of this pain.....i am also experiencing headaches.

could you please suggest some exercises for me.

PS (the pain started the day after i started a new abdominal exercise)

  • oh my God I just did the stretch for the front of the neck and GOD IT HURTS!

there is a very tender spot that if I touch it refers pain to the shoulder, chest and makes me jump (where the front of my neck meets the left shoulder)

could it be that the cause of my pain is a forward head?

  • @TheYaom - Gently! Stretching shouldn't hurt. And, yes, I think your conclusions about your neck are correct.

  • I have a lot of upper back pain, like right behind my shoulder blades.... plus neck pain and as a result I get like nerve pain feeling on the back of my head left side mostly, and discomfort all over my head with headaches, it hurts behind my left ear, my shoulder sometimes hurt.

I use computers a LOT because of work, like 10 hours or 12 hours daily!

I saw a neurologist and he told me I have a straight neck and two bulging discs C4, C5...

would u recommend these exercises in my case?

  • @TheYaom - absolutely I would recommend this; this is exactly what i recommend to clients that use the computer for a living all the time. With 5-10 minutes of this a couple of times a day, you should feel noticeable results in a couple of weeks. The other thing that would be critically important to do is to make sure that you get up from the computer at least every hour and do something else for 5 minutes or so.

  • My chiropractor gave me some very similar stretches, but I think this is superior because sitting on my hand anchors my back. Good video.

  • aah¬ just did a wierd stretch and something move so now it fukin kills to turn my head left and right

  • @nicsevern - sorry to hear it. my advice would be twofold: apply ice liberally and stay away from weird stretches. Gently and sloooo-wly on stretches always. If the pain persists at the same intensity for more than 48 hours, it's time to go see a doctor. Hope this isn't the case.

  • @askthebodyworker yeah lol i wasnt expecting anything during a yawn/stretch =) but thanks i will keep that in mind!

  • i can feel the pain when i put pressure on my right upper back

  • I can't wait to try this. At least 2 or 3 times a year I injury the back of my neck lifting weights. It usually happens from bench press, pushing my head too hard against the pad. Obviously that shouldn't throw my neck out so I'm looking for answers. I do feel that my shoulders slump inward and my head does tend to be forward, so it makes sense that the front of my neck and chest is shorter. I'm going to try the stretches and hopefully get some relief! Thanks for the video!!

  • hey ...i have upper back pain btw two scapulae...it sometimes radiates till my upper hands...it all started after i did exercise for abs(crunches)...pain some days its bad ,some days its ok...iam worried if it gets worse :-(...does the same exercise help??suggest me something..

  • @nowletsdoit - yes, this exercise will help, and from your symptoms I recommend highly that you go get yourself checked by a doctor. You may have pinched a nerve.

  • @askthebodyworker hey thank you....it is working ...

  • thanks so much

  • @jaspersl 1 i have the exact same problem and i am 16 it was hurt for about 3 months and got better and nows it has started back idk what to do and it is effecting my weight lifting

  • I got this sharp pain on my upper right back.. So will this help? I've been having this for a loong time.. Is it because I'm an athlete? I'm 16 years old.. Will this video help me, please respond ASAP!

  • @jaspersl1 Aboslutely. Tell me more about exactly where the pain is in your back and I can tell you better which positions will give you the most bang for your buck.

  • im 15 and i have back pain because i slouch this helped thaks :)
