Donizetti consciously trying to write Spanish melodies - as he also did in La Favorite (which is about the father of the king in Padilla). Although he was never in Spain in his life.

Anyway, delicious utterly Donizetti melody, beautifuly sung.

I don't know who the picture is of, but that is not Stella Zambalis! There is a correct picture in the other video from this performance. It would be a shame for another face to be put to this great artists work

I REALLY like this. Renee Fleming, though always wonderful, has such a beautiful youthful sound here. I love it.

This is perfect! Zambalis is much better here, in a role written for a soprano which sits comfortably in her range. Fleming is gentle, subtle, light. The moderato is just brilliant for both singers. One can really only put up one complaint: where have all these qualities Fleming had disappeared? Thank you so much for this :)!

Renee Fleming was 30 when this was made, and she is now nearly 50. She has gained interpretively in the past 19 years. Her voice is also more expressive.
