Please. Don't forget their origin. Mmmmm ... Oh, I remember. They called San Francisco home. And they took their name from a popular muliti pill affectionately known as "blue cheer". That was an invention of some owly kind of guy. First heavy metal? First power group? Or maybe just the first acid rock group. They definitely played. AND they were managed by Gut. And that makes perfect sense.
one night in summer of 67 or so they played on the steve allen late night show. they were so loud it completely overpowered the studio sound system and what you heard while watching was just a blur of noise. outstanding! just the line hum from the marshalls before they started was feeding back through the studio system. funniest part of it all was that steve allen was a notorious rock and roll hater.
I still cant believe these guys R still so Underrated today and back then,This was Nasty Heavy! & best part They had the Look and the Sound for 67´68´-I´ve never seen other Band members with hair so long like this until the end on 69 maybe!
@stratosl - I just wrote that on another video's comments. I agree 100%. Of course, heavy metal as a rock genre was not as yet defined. But this song has all the components--and I LOVE that drumming.
That's right, BC was the first real Metal band, and Rush pays homage to them on Feedback, their album of covers, with the BC's arrangement on Summertime Blues, and the signature BC riff right in the intro..
But, Jimmy Page was right behind them on the Metal front with early versions of Dazed and Confused that he was doing at the end of The Yardbirds time, ca '68..
A C-123 flown in to the U.S. by the C.I.A. Oliver North loaded that plane to the brim with Cocain. The C.I.A. had the D.E.A. and Military distribute the drug to Americans to create a bond with Foriegn Nations.I am going to exploit the Gov. through my music. (Hi Mike Flick) long time no see!
You can't say this is the first metal song. Yes its heavy. Heavy for the time too. But there were songs heavy before this music was getting heavier since 1964 when dave davies of the kinks discovered distortion by cutting up his amp with a razor blade. The guitarist from the sonics the following eyar doing somthing similar with a knife getting a fuzzier sound. then bands like hendrix cream and the yardbirds furthering it adding in their own stuff and giving birth to psychadelic rock!
also frank zappa is often cites as being the first to have a "heavy song" with who are the brain police.
in the mid to late 60's many psychadelic bands were experimenting with fuzz and having very heavy fuzz and distortion. Blue cheer then came ont eh scene with the powerful drumming which added a attitude to the heavyness. then u had zep and dep purple etc.
But the first band that was actually "Metal" was sabbath. bringing in dark themes to this heavy music!
I saw them in '68 at the Filmore, three small guys with LOTS OF HAIR. Blue Cheer was a kind of acid that was around at the time. Wellveryinteresting is right ...Steppenwolf made the first reference to "Heavy Metal Thunder"I also remember that they had Marshall amps stacked to the fucking ceiling! It still rocks after forty years.
Not necessarily. There is some question about that, seeming that back in 1968 when this was released it was the first year for Steppenwolf ("Born To Be Wild" & "Magic Carpet Ride"), Iron Butterfly ("In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida") and a couple of other early examples of the ramping up for later metal of the guitar. Also a year before 1968, 1967 was the start of Cream, Jimi Hendrix & Vanilla Fudge's version of the Supremes hit, "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
When they released this song I thought it was the best fuckin' piece of music I'd ever heard. It still sounds great after more than 40 years. To do what they did to Eddie Cochran's pop ditty showed a generational earthquake. No "smile nicely for the camera", just "stick your head into the speakers and cop this". Blue Cheer a probably still making money from it. Richly deserved. What a performance of rebellion - Eddie would have loved it.
KICK AZZZZ !!!!

Arguably the first 'Heavy Metal' band in Rock 'n' Roll...their version of Eddie Cochran's 'Summertime Blues' is my own personal favorite.
