  • All these idiots slating this woman off, need to realise that she is teaching you HOW TO TUNE the A string of the violin NOT what the pitch of the A string, aka 440Hz sounds like. There is a difference, and trust me, coming from a grade 8 abrsm distinction violinist, what she is teaching here is more useful. P.s buy a tuner.

  • i wish you didnt talk so much and playedthe a string more and longer

  • I think your A is a little flat... no judgment just to me sounds flat. but thank you what you're doing is amazing:)

  • this is a good video. i needed the a string to tune the rest. thanks for posting.

  • This was excellent hopefully I can tune betta in class:) thank you so much!!!!!:D

  • you guys should not condemn someone who is doing a service for free. and no one should make racist remarks or about her looks. if the A is a little out of tune..so be it. u guys know how to tune then tune your own you dont need to follow her. whats the probelm?? i can tune myself but i still watch this video with some respect for her. why? cos she has the guts to do it guys..chill it man!!

  • While listening to this my teeth began to ache, and I wondered why. I discovered that I was biting down. My teeth still hurt.

  • There is nothing wrong with this girl's tutorial. Perhaps if she were white it would make you white listeners a bit more comfortable. Honestly, it would definitely be a grand gesture to keep your unnecessary comments to yourselves and show some respect.

  • thanks all i wanted is the sound of the A string... from their i can do by myself

  • cant she shut the .... up, and play. only play cuz im trying to tune my violin from her and she keeps on talking and not playing.

  • hi, I have a little question... isnt your A is a bit too high? I dont have the courage to turn my peg to reach that pitch~ I adjusted my A on the low A

Sorry if its confusing, I have little knowledge of English... hahaha

  • can u just play the dam string

  • this video is actually helpfull

  • She was doing it right. Just because it doesn't match the exact pitch the piano makes doesn't mean it's wrong. My violin never gets it right on the dot!

  • @AJH0014 what I'm saying is the people who use these methods are probably the people who do go out and perform. But you're right. there's no way anyone who doesn't know how to tune is going to be out performing any time soon. lol.

  • @AJHcorolla what about tuning right before a performance you have and you happen to have no tuner around? I think these methods can be handdy in certain situations but there are easier ways. Not that they're always possible.

  • maybe my speakers are bad at hearing her my f----n ears did nt hear a word she said but my ears are perfect

  • ur a fail teacher

  • that sounded flat lol

  • uuum i dont think it rings when its when its in tune. It rings even if it isnt in tune

  • @Kingdra125 what's a joke? (sorry, its been awhile sine i posted this and i can't find ur initial comment

  • ty for the upload my ocestra teacher starts on a also my band teacher also staeted on a i normaly start on g

  • my teacher starts with the G???

  • lol, expert fail.

  • Oh my days, either her camera is really that bad, or this woman can't tell her violin is out of tune :S

    No offence, but...er?

  • what the hell ive bin playing for a year and i can even tell your violin is out of tune =\

  • I don't know if it's her bowing or the violin... but her bowing starts with an unpleasant scratchy sound

  • please tell me you're being sarcastic

  • @betrekwoman I agree. I Have been playing the violin for almost 20 years and I don't think that she adequately describes the actual process of tuning a violin. Not to be rude but...

What about explaining the function of the pegs and fine tuners. That may help.

  • Comment removed

  • @vivianof011 what the f*** are YOU talking about!? i didn't even make a comment on her ethnicity! I was just stating that the vid didnt help explain how to tune a violin.

  • plus

i'm black, so what u talkin bout in the first place.

  • @betrekwoman ...and she does look like a dude... that is if she even is a woman. if anyone can actually tell plz help me. i'm serious.

  • @betrekwoman where you checkin out the video to see what she looks like? thats the only reason I can think of as to why someone would be so interested in her physical appearance

  • @Eehsz All Im saying is that the video sucks just like every other expert village video and all she does is play the string badly without een demonstrating how to tune it-and shes ugly. but i really wish ppl would stom commenting about this becuz it all started over a year ago and im really starting to get tired of it.

  • make sure your tuner's setting is at 440, also try the peg, not the fine tuner

  • Ok I really can't tune the A string, I have practically wound the fine tuner into the ground but it still only coughs out an E or F according to my tuner...any help?

  • Why not use the peg? If your fine tuner won't go any lower, use the peg to get the string a little flat, then use the fine tuner (which can only go up now) to bring it up to 440.

  • Thanks! It's tuned fine now..was just a bit worried of snapping the string but it didn't so thats good :)

  • and wtf r these stupid advertisments for!

  • GOOD ONE:D

  • Good one AJHCOROLLA, YOu are added to friends:D

  • Actually when pressing on the violin bow, it distorts the sound and makes it lower.

  • I have to agree with AJHcorolla... I'm sorry, but you really are off-key. For those of you who don't have perfect pitch hearing, you should absolutely get an electric tuner.

  • I tried to play the violin... but i cant make a sound

  • you bow probably has no rosin on it and/or your on the wrong side of the bridge

  • put rosin on your bow

  • my violin sint even workig wen i do the notes and ive ben tuning it but it isnt working either

  • expert villlage is kinda annoying!

  • can anyone plz guide me to a useful software for beginners like guitatpro" and specially how to read note sheets, thanks

  • rosin

  • rosin or resin sorry ?

  • does each string bring up a note like a guitar

    E A D G B E ?

  • The violin only has 4 strings: G D A E and they are the opposite of the guitar. E is the highest open string and G is the lowest(in terms of pitch). hope that answers your question.

  • thanks

  • oh and i dont know anything about violins at all so other than my problem with no sound... tips would be great

  • hey, i JUST got a fiddle also, and i cant seem ti make any sound at all.... is it because its not tuned properly, or what? have you fiuered out the problem....?

  • i decided to spend like 10 minutes doing nothinjg but puting that sap stuff or whatever it is on the bow... but its still a pain to keep the bow in tune.. i kno what the notes sound lick because i play guitar and piano and i havnt had all the strings tuned right at once since i bought it

  • what it new 'sap stuff'? Because if it's new then you might have to rub it with a nail file(the ruff side) to actully get the rosin on the bow.

  • @wildhorses36 actually it's not good to try to break rosin in with anything else but the bow. It's a common misconception that scratching rosin will put the sap on the bow. Brand new rosin should be broken in using just the bow hair.

  • Lol i only ever run the resin over the bow three times dont put too much!

  • apply rosin to the bow- i had the same problem with my brand new violin and couldn't figure it out- my old bows and old violin were already quite worn in. take a kitchen knife and put a few slashes in your new rosin, so it's got powdery breaks in it- run the bow across it, it'll pick up sound when you apply it to your strings. :)

  • i guess it is because you probably did not put rosin on the bow

  • concerning your lack of sound: Do you have a horse-hair bow or a nylon bow? Genuine horse hair bows need a lot less rosin (the "sap stuff") than nylon bows, but either of them new requires you to spend quite a lot of time rosining it.

As for keeping it in tune, new strings need to be retuned a lot. New strings aren't stretched out yet, and as such might lose their tuning in only a few minutes. It may take a couple of days before it will hold it's tuning for awhile, and even still it is good...

  • ...to retune every hour or so. Variations in temperature from stage lights and the vibration of the string can bring an instrument back out of tune.

Back to the bow, another thought crossed my mind. Do you have it tightened properly? Too loose and it won't draw out sound, too tight is bad for the bow.

  • Comment removed

  • i cant even get my violin to make any sound.. ive tried using both of my bows and iven been through 3 different sets of string and ive put that stuff on the hairs of the bow that is supposed to help it but no sound is coming out other than a couple squeals

  • @warrentini try finding the proper arm and body structure for yourself. Right elbow high, left wrist relaxed, and back straight.

  • Maybe it's just me, but my strings ring anytime they're tight, but that doesn't mean they're in tune. I don't know what to listen for. I got a beginner's book that has a cd in it with tuning notes, but they're played on a piano. how am I supposed to tune my violin to a piano? They sound different. If they sounded the same, no one would play the piano cause it'd be too expensive and hard to carry and store. These videos WOULD be helpful.... I just don't know what I'm listening for.

  • K, for starters, the notes on the piano, or atleast in this case the notes you're using to tune with for your violin, are the same as the piano, not same in actual "sound" but they are in the same sound wave length, and you have to listen for the sound waves, when the sound waves match, you have the right tone.

  • GreyShinobi. I think as a beginner you shouldnt be worried about tuning your violin as yet. First get the fundamentals, like understanding why they play on the piano yet you're tuning a violin. Practice your pieces, practice vibrato and everything else. Tuning is last because is requires a trained ear. So let your teacher tune for you and when u ready ull see it yourself. You wont be asking any q's.

  • You can also use a chromatic tuner.

  • @GreyShinobi Listen to the pitch, not the actually sound the piano makes. When you match pitches, it should sound like only one instrument is playing it and it should sound open.

  • @GreyShinobi The piano is the most helpful of tuning but that's just me.

  • I got the other strings in tune, but not the a string...grr...

  • Dang it I wish she would play it out longer!

  • THANNNKSSS A LOOOTT!!!

  • do you need some rosin or something?

  • you should get a new violin....it sounds cranky :).
