Jimmy Page is probably my favorite guitarist of all time, same with Brian May, but I put May quite a bit down the list as far as technicality goes. Page is a bit below Stevie Ray Vaughn and Slowhand, who in my opinion are tied for #1 in terms of technicality/musicality.

Those you debating the origins of the song, it is based on "Childe Ballad 95", a several-hundred-year-old traditional european song that has numerous versions found in a number of countries, including England, Germany and parts of Scandanavia. The Zep version is based on a version that made it to America, probably sung by Appalachian settlers and slaves in the American South, and eventually recorded by Folk artist Lead Belly in the 30s.

I guess you could say according to the ARRANGEMENT a song is pop, or rock, or country, or traditional. But songs themselves usually defy categories. Particularly if a song is traditional (like this one) it is wide open to the artists' own interpretation.

"Gallows Poll" as a song is an OLD English folk tune, from the 1800s at least. Some American country/western performers have done it over the years too, as has Bob Dylan. the song is supposed to tell the story of a man trying to get out of being hung (the punishment for many offenses way back when) by bribing the hangman. Great song!

Led Zeppelin did steal this song from LeadBelly. The song is about a black man pleading not to be hung. A gallow is a device used to hang people. LeadBelly is from the south where sadly many black people were lynched. Hence, Keep from the Gallows Pole.

Led Zep is great and I don't mind them covering an old blues song they liked but it is disgusting how they claim to wrote this song as well as many others. What would 4 guys from england know about lynching.

It's one of many versions of "The Maid Freed From the Gallows" from the "English and Scottish Ballads" collected by Francis James Child.
