I think it is a rare Tennessee Whiskey, it has been know to help harp players with the high notes. I use Jackie D and it helps me, but he is a god and uses custom equipment.
This is an amazing bit of video - he's playing in 3rd position for the first solo, then into cross harp for the second solo, and then straight for the last, it's a great lesson in different styles of blues harp playing|!
And I love the way he's looking for the right harp while he's singing, he must have at least one in every pocket of that jacket...
There ain't nothing about Charlie that would even imply that he's indulgent or a show off. He is by far one of the most humble and POLITE harp players I have ever met. Anyone who has met him knows this damn well. It's true what they say. Charlie can't do no wrong.
Saw Mr.Musselwhite in 68 in a little joint in Berkley Ca. There must have been 16 or 17 people there. But when the music started he played that harp inside out and upside down. I only thought i had heard the blues harp before that night. I managed to see Charlie perhaps ten other times. Once in Boulder Co. at Tulagi's on the hill. and Pollardville in Stockton Ca. Last time was at the fillmore in 2000. John Lee Hooker and Charlie were the Artists that night. Everyone ended up jamming together.
What a master of the harp! I first heard him back about 1970 or so. He has such mastery over the instrument. He understands music theory which is where most guys fall down. He is a true musician. (Just wish he could sing) Sorry, Charlie.
Fantastic , I met Charlie twice when he played here in the 80s and 90s in Auckland New Zealand, I got him to sign my Stand back album . He is a great Harp player and singer and a Very Cool Man ;-) .
HarpS Thanks for putting it right.Art feeling emotion I am from Tennessee USA I've been privileged to actually see James Cotton,James Harmon, Booba Barnes,Sam Meyers,William Clark told me what it was like playing with Freddie Below one of my favorites. I am a drummer so it was good to hear Mr Clark say that he also knew The Great Sam Lay. Frank Beard of ZZ Top, is another guy drummers copy here.Jordan and Gadd and Chambers.Germany as well as Europe have great players like Greb, Lang, many others
its just i dont like those discussions or comments, you cant judge art, i like people with a unique style, you can tell its Charlie from the first note, thats what count
Man, I wish Memphis Charlie would show up at my local jam! I was lucky enough to see him on his last swing through Boston with Mark Hummel's blue harp show with him and Kim Wilson. Charlie was amazing, still at the top of his game.
is that a FT123-456 on the floor behind the drums?

Good ole blues fella. Real blues. Born in Mississippi. Still blowing, saw him last night. Sings cool, too. Was all over those harps.
