I am not the extremist, the extremists are Will Hutton and his 'Guardian' colleagues whose minds evidently became arrested at the rebellious stages of adolescence. What else could possibly explain this mindless, hateful republicanism?
Sounds like pretty moderate, intellectual republicanism, if it is indeed republicanism, that we have here. He was editor of the observer at this time btw...
Yes the Observer is the Sunday edition of the Guardian. Same thing. They like to pretend that the monarchy somehow impinges on democratic government when this is the opposite of the truth and when the real assault on democracy and sovereignty emanates from the EU - An organization which can always count on the fanatical support of Will Hutton and his anti-British colleagues.
As I have said, the crown has no effective powers. However it does provide a measure of restraint on demotic and egocentric politicians. The crown is there to remind them that the state is everlasting; it came before them and will outlast them. If you abolish the monarchy you are disconnecting Britain from its political and cultural inheritance. It would fully enclose the British people in a world of mass popular culture and passing fads.
Will Hutton is an ignorant fuck-wit and Earl Spencer's speech was venomous. Why does Hutton want to demote the royalty when it plays no political role anyway? He's just a embittered anti-british little bastard.

You don't have democracy (or meritocracy for that matter) when power is allocated by inheritance.

He's British himself and one time editor of a major British newspaper. I think you're blinded somewhat by your own extremist political views.
