The music for this level is actually a slowed-down version of his "Dangerous" hit, "Jam"! Awesome, huh? I wasn't that good in Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2, and 3, and Sonic and Knuckles games. I always lose my rings, get a couple of game overs, and start the level all over again. Oh, by the way. Back in the day I never knew that up & down was the way to get down there. I kept jumping on it and hoped I could get a gap big enough like at 6:18. I'd have to be quick though or it would close in an instant. Tedious and frustrating it was!
i comepletely agree, when i was a child i never got past that barrel. i was stuck forever, i could never get past. i just beat sonic 3 & knuckles with all 14 emeralds for the first time and im 23 years old now. haha. as long as other people got stuck as well i dont feel all that bad.

Here's how to defeat the Barrel of Doom with Sonic & Tails together in Carnival Night Zone Act 2 in Sonic 3:
The only way to proceed is to always press Up and Down on the D-Pad button repeatedly to reach the bottom while standing on the red-&-white spinning barrel just until it goes totally low enough for Sonic & Tails together to go jump right off at the bottom, which is very easy as 1, 2, 3.
I need to add in on that stupid barrel it took me like an hour of hoping with tails before finally a fluke happened and I was able to pass this guy just sits on it and it goes lower and lower X_X

I managed to get past the barrel bit (6:16-6:39), but I don't really know how?! It took me ages to get past that barrel. I remember whilst jumping on top of the barrel seeing tails get caught inside the wall on the right of the screen and then somehow a few minutes later by constantly jumping on the barrel (with the water shield) I managed to fall through the bottom of the barrel, only to land on the barrel below it. A glitch maybe?
LOL. I glitched the game just to get through that part when I played it. Used the bouncing bubble fast and then I was somehow squeezed through the wall. I managed to get through with Tails once the hard way. Since the bubbletrick didnt work I jumped up and down until I could pass through. It was really difficult and I used alot of time on it.
Guess I'll fire up the mega drive and play it once more. This time the easy way :)

As Knuckles, you don't have to fight Robotnik at the end. All there is is the whatchamacallit at the end of the level.

Here's how to pass the Barrel at Carnival Night Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The only way to pass the Barrel is to always go stand on it, press Up and Down on the D-Pad, and jump right off at the bottom, which is very easy.

WTF @ the barrel, i played this game at maybe 6 or 7? and i probably restarted more than 10 times from TIMES UP at that place -_-

Age 6-8 .. never knew how to get through that damn barrel. I always just would wing it for hours and finally get it by accident, then in 2006 at age 17 I found out what you actually had to do and damn did I feel stupid as hell. Great..greeeaaat game.

Omg I remember this part from when I was like seven :D every time I would try to beat the damn game I got stuck on this stupid barrel. I though you just had to jump hard enough on the damn thing. I wasted sooooooo much time and this is all you had to do.

Lol thanks for the reminder. Me and my older bro played this back in the day on our sega genesis and we HATED the infamous "BARREL FROM HELL". Now that he's older I decided to get the anniversary collection for DS. Thanks again for the help. Lol just a lil history, my older bro was always sonic and I was always tails ^^

How to do the barrel!
(Like this loads of times so people don't need to search
Jump on the barrel, then press down as it goes down, then press up as it goes up. Then down and up etc till you can reach the bit under it!

I managed to get past the barrel bit (6:16-6:39), but I don't really know how?! It took me ages to get past that barrel. I remember whilst jumping on top of the barrel seeing tails get caught inside the wall on the right of the screen and then somehow a few minutes later by constantly jumping on the barrel (with the water shield) I managed to fall through the bottom of the barrel, only to land on the barrel below it. A glitch maybe?

THAT BARREL! I didn't have the internet back then, there was no way to figure it out.
It turns out the answer was to simply manipulate gravity....The last thing I expected...
That ruined a perfectly good game for me.

LOL. I glitched the game just to get through that part when I played it. Used the bouncing bubble fast and then I was somehow squeezed through the wall. I managed to get through with Tails once the hard way. Since the bubbletrick didnt work I jumped up and down until I could pass through. It was really difficult and I used alot of time on it.
Guess I'll fire up the mega drive and play it once more. This time the easy way :)
