Definitely agree. All movies should be subbed and not dubbed. VERY rarely does dubbing work out, and I can count the number of times it's improved anything on one hand.
RAN is an amazing film, though, no amount of dubbing could ever ruin the final, silent moments of the film with the blinded Tsurumaru with his Buddha scroll wandering about the cliffs, serving as a metaphor for the human condition.
It really disgusts me how the Europeans mandate film dubbing for release. I had no idea that dubbed versions of Kurosawa films existed until I saw the new release of 'Ran' (the contract is now with a French company); it has a dub for each major European language! Even worse, the default language track on the US/UK version of that disk is English (no doubt because the Europeans think we English speakers like dubbing as much as they do)
ScholarsInk-I know! I can't think of ANY reason that a dubbed movie would be superior to a subtitled one, except maybe if a person is blind/vision-impaired and needs to rely on the audio. Well, maybe Europeans just don't like to read.? Doesn't matter the language, dubbing should just be outlawed! It's such a slap in the face to great filmmakers.
@audgeyp I'm glad to see that someone sees this the same way. It's hard for me to imagine an Audrey Hepburn film without her unique and irreplaceable voice, but the same goes for languages I don't speak (such as Japanese) - imagine Yojimbo or one of the other Kurosawa classics but without Mifune Toshiro's distinctive growl of a voice - it simply doesn't work.
However, the baddest scene was lady kaede's sucker attack against her conqueror by pretending to surrender her father's helmet, only to suddenly incapacitate and simultaneously threaten to kill him and seduce him into capitulation. One of the most devestating scenes in modern cinema.
nicely cutted..hehehe..i really didnt see if she was beheaded by that cool samurai..havent heard her head hit the floor..but that is cool..i wish i was that samurai..hehehe..could have done it with someone i have a grudge on..
This stuck with me more than anything else in this movie (which is really saying something, the movie was awesome). I've known Asian women who appear passive and gentle, and live their ambitions through their husband. But I think the loyalty that Kurogane shows to his master despite his master turning against him over this treacherous woman is just amazing. That is true loyalty.
Well, I guess if more women would be as merciless and revengeful as Lady Kaede [a nice female counterpart of Shakespeares original villain Edmund by the way] the world would certainly be a much better place than it is now.
This is from the 1985 film Ran. it is one of my all-time favorite movies by the great director Akira kurosawa. the woman who is decapitated is Lady Kaede, she was responsible for destroying the Ichimonji clan by using her body to seduce the man in the red armor (Jiro). the guy who decapitates her, Kurogane, is Jiro's vassal. he was pissed, she was there. if you don't understand what I'm talking about, try to find the movie. It's old, but there are subtitles...it really is something.
She turned brother against brother in her quest for revenge. Her father-in-law was the one who had killed her family. But it was all for nought, as her husbands army was defeated by her former lover's army. In the end, the entire family was wiped out.
