The movie I saw turned black and white when she plucked the guy's eye out, then returned to colour when she blinked while on the upper floor shortly after the lights were switched off. Was I watching the original or is this continuous colour version the original? I'm confused.

@trashcanalive the black and white version is the original version in movie theaters and regular DVD. HOWEVER, this version is the ORIGINAL ORIGINAL, its from the uncut, unrated edition of the movie. They turned it black and white for the final version because at some point, they ran out of fake blood, (notice how some of the sprays are clear or white) and also, there was way too much gore for movie theaters anyways.

@Atreyu142 Actually the "clear blood" is from the wet guys that were pushed into the pool. on such a large budget movie you don't run out of fake blood; food coloring and glycerin.

Tarantino did this for 2 reasons:

MPAA wanted the Crazy 88 scene censored or edited for theatrical release

Since BW also acted as a homage to 70s and 80s samurai movies, he used it to conceal shots where blood was absent.

I would like to think that that is precisely what Uma's character does. And after most of the work is done, back in color.
