This is hilarious! Guys guys guys! If you guys really take this much too seriously then you'll frustrate YOURSELVES! This is comedy for you. REAL LIFE! Kudos, guys for putting this on YouTube. Just think about the fact that this is hilarious and laugh, and THEN go back to looking at Advanced Music Theory like I WAS when I WAS WATCHING THIS! xD It's even more funny because I had the same conversation you guys with one of my friends one day. They're not taking this seriously, so you shouldn't. :D
I'm not even done watching this, but I want to say that I laughed pretty hard when you started the I-IV-V progression as I started singing every ramones song ever in my head. lol.
hahahaha i found this to be ridiculasly funny haha, it was pretty much like you took all the thought in my head about shitty new age emo bands and laid them out in a really funny way, from one song writer to another song writer (im assuming) that was a really funny portrayal of all the stuff out there that sounds the same haha. "see but thats why i was about to go to miner, because i'm sad" hahaha
ehem...diatonic chord tones that is. and, it's not everything...it's a lot, but far from everything. there's a lot that can be done with diatonic harmony, rhythmic variation etc.. that are just as important as chromaticism. There's a lot more to music than the extra five notes. There are endless variations in how they are put together, sensed, given various dynamics etc...but, that all being said. Then add other instruments, sounds, electronic sound, layering, mixing...all kinds of factors.
Ok, hey, you address a serious problem for the novice composer, but do little to answer the questions. I don't write because everything I write sounds like it's already been done. I've discovered that the great tunes, have subtle complexities in lyrics, harmony, bass, melody and rhythm that creates interest, newness and coherence.
You guys are funny, but seem to never resolve the comic/interpersonal dissonance, which is frustrating...so hug eachother next time.
ok, I was notified by email when you posted this note, which I see is in answer to mine below. But, how does you tube know that your note, and not others, was the one that answered me? is it the word "hug" that's common? very interesting, cause my name's not in your latest comment. and dude's..ew.. don't hug.. just resolve the debate...at least clearly recap your positions and why both have merrit.

Most people aren't used to hearing dissonance as the tonality of songs...you should write in Phrygian, Locrian and the Diminished scale. Most people will think that you're original, and probably that you worship the devil...but hey, isn't that a payoff you're willing to make for your music?
once you learn how to write melody this all makes more sense write melodys by whistling or singing and then let the melody and the chords have a fight then extend the chords fuck arround with transpostions (key changes) then finally take stimulants so you belive in the silly song and appear somewhere nobody knows who you are so they'll think you're "interesting"
Years ago, when my friends and I were that age and searching for a whole new sound/style invention that would hopefully catapult us to success, one friend proposed a guitar with added frets for "quartertones" (24-note scale). This was his answer for coming up with "something original". He based the idea on his assumption that John Petrucci had such a guitar; this assumption was based on his inability to figure out Dream Theater by ear.
Ha rofl. Yeah, the 24 tet system is rare it would be much more likely for a 19 or 31 TET system but I've never heard of a rock artist using that (I'm sure it's been done).
This is what too much American pop can do to a guitarist..The first rule in music: There are no rules. These guys should learn some alternate chords, and turn off the radio for about 6 months.
you guys are very funny... your... act... reminds me of the sketch comedy trio Stella... "Name a song that goes G C D.. name one song..." "how about i name an entire album by a band called Guns N Roses..." hahahaha
The only thing that we 'rambled' about what relative minor. Are you saying that doesn't exist? The whole purpose of the video was to point out the structure of countless pop songs, which for the bridge, go to the relative minor.
I'm so glad there are others out there who are sick of modern b.s. I like to believe that music will get better but then I turn on Z 107.7 or 101.1 and I cry myself to sleep because of this modern crap
"Get better?" - There is better! It is good music in this world - don't believe the radio is the source for good music, people.. The net is! :D (im not referring to illegal activities here)
Gah! i hate these comments. Why would it be a waste? Since you seek to be entertained at youtube you'll have to appreciate that people are actually willig to do it. If your not happy with whatever you're searching for you'll have to find other means to entertain yourself with on your own

really dissonance is everything. if all you play is cord tones itl never be original. dissonance is shape, and density.
