Reminds me of Mimi Fox, in that he always seems more interested in deconstructing every tune he performs than showing off the standard in play at the moment. At least here, he occasionally hints at the melody (one of my favorites). On many other performances like Fox, I am left to wonder why he even calls it by the name of a standard. He has great chops and tone, I just wish he would play it straight a bit more.
I can't believe someone as awesome as Tupac Mantilla would use one of those shitty excuses for a "djembe" that Remo spits out for God knows whatever terrible reason. Eugh.
actually had an idea for a movie with this tune its a comedy about a guy at his workplace and the unusual suspects crisp man this tune is off of sounding point julians first album i believe this young man and gilad hekselman are the future of jazz guitar as far as im concerned ought to be interesting where they both go cause thus far theyve both been very creative see if it keeps up
@jazzsaavy Check out Nir Felder I find him far more interesting and creative than these guys. There is something about gilad, julian I don't find very interesting just this lack of "" you know :)
@yoshy321 This is Julian's INSANELY modest performance compared to his others... You should check him out a little bit more before you talk crap about his creativity and the "fascination" you find in his playing. Here's an example video of one of Julian's better performances (but not even the best out of many more he has up): google "julian lage ode to elvin"
this is some cool ass shit !!
