  • You played great!

    Owns the same trumpet.

    C. G. CONN 1BR

  • his soul is coming out of his trumpet!!!! how badass!!

  • muito legal

  • anyone ever transcribe this?

  • @JBHuynh25 yes

  • Ooou..That´s Groove..and Ray Brown is master of timing!

  • i think payton really kicks ass at this performance. his solo is great. every trumpet player can have a day with a tired embouchure.

  • Na minha opinião este sr está naquele grupo dos melhores trompetistas jazz de sempre. in my opinion, this sir is between the best jazz trumpet players of all times.

  • Na minha opinião este sr está naquele grupo dos melhores trompetistas jazz de sempre.

  • Fantástico o som que esse músico genial extrai impressionante instrumento.

  • YEA I'm seeing him LIVE too!!!!

  • There are wrong notes, and there are notes that would normally be out of place, but are put in place by musicians who hear them that way.

  • excellent jazz!

  • He was in a car accident and his lips were damaged. Give the guy a break! Check out his website for the story. Massive respect to Nicholas Payton. He can play!

  • wow this sound awesome, because of the more pop rythm and the up funked tune!

  • The drummer is rushing his ass off. Listen to the tempo at the beginning of the tune and then scroll to the end.

  • @TRBrownn well according to the metronome that I own, the drummer isn't rushing and the tempo stays at a pretty even half note=110 bpm the whole time. but i guess my metronome is broken then and just happened to rush at the exact same speed as the drummer.

  • @flipadiddle I hate when my metronome breaks...seems that everyone of them that I buy is broken ;)

  • @flipadiddle dude the shit clearly speeds up at the very beginning

  • @TRBrownn --- It picks up a touch, not by much at all but remember.....Ray Brown got paid to rush, the drummer is following the boss.

  • wow music that requires talent to play!

  • heroin addict you say? hmmm.... did anyone ever hear about man named ray charles?

  • A jazz musician doing drugs and acting crazy???? It'll never catch on .He must be crap.

  • There are no wrong notes in Jazz,..."somebody hit a wrong note, and jazz was born."...Miles Davis

  • everyone needs to shut the fuck up and listen to the music or get off this video....i was trying to watch this video which is awesome and then i scroll down and see idiots arguing about Payton's drug habits.....im sure none of you play anywhere near as good as him....maybe he did embarrass himself but he made a mistake. Its whatever....get over yourselves...look at yourself before you judge others.

  • videos like this help out alot. got a fake book filled with jazz and most of them don't know even know how they sound. sounds really great by the way.

  • now this is it,,,

  • For anyone who has commented on this bashing CMU students, I would like to clear up something. The Payton you hear in this video is absolutely not (figuratively) who showed up on our campus this February. His poor performance was not a "bad day", but rather the result of the heroin he shot before playing. Those of us on stage watched as THAT artist disappointed a full auditorium and doubtlessly turned away many young minds from America's only genuine institution (that is jazz, not CMU).

  • @STRON2AM Did you see him shoot heroin?

  • @STRON2AM Honestly, I think it is awesome Payton is a heroin addict. Seriously. If he finds joy in something like that and it makes him enjoy playing trumpet more, then why do you have to be all selfish and bash on HIM? If he wants to shoot heroin, that is his own business. You paid money to see him play trumpet. He provided you his service. If you didn't like it, then don't go see him again in the future. Payton is the man and I respect him for his choices.

  • @STRON2AM Your fucking stupid this was not at all a bad performance Nicholas doesn't do heroin and even if he did you'd have no proof listen to the sweet sounds of his horn and shut the hell up.

  • STFU Idiots, you guys are claiming you have your night EV'RY night?

  • @RamaRubikku suck it and see my other comments

  • What's the name of the pianist???? I've seen him in a couple of videos... he's amazing!

  • I LOVE RAY BROWN!

  • Great!!

  • eyeswatchingGod, you are soooo right. Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • You CMU students have a lot of time on your hands. You all seem to be a hateful and vengeful group of small-minded buffoons, posting negative comments about Mr. Payton all over this site. So what if he had a bad night. He's human. Shit happens. How about posting a video of your performances, if you even have any, and let's see how you fare out.

  • exactly. well put.

  • @eyeswatchingGod I agree with you... in my opinion (as a musician) he did a great solo, I'm not a trumpeter buy I certainly know about jazz improvisation and he had absolute domain in all the areas =) great solo!

  • @eyeswatchingGod He shot up heroin in the dressing room before playing to a packed auditorium of educators and high school musicians who idolized him. He embarrassed himself and very well knew it. He left the building before we had finished playing the last tune and was found hours later strung out of his mind on the steps of the university library. If anyone was a buffoon, It was Payton and I fail to see how being upset about it makes those of us who were there that night small minded.

  • @eyeswatchingGod

    This was his BAD night?!

    Holy hot damn.

  • @eyeswatchingGod I am a jazz musician and a jazz lover so I know a bad performance when I hear one and this one is not bad at all. Perhaps he can play better than how he played here but from my ears I heard a swinging jazzin cat. The speed up in the tempo may have been seen as intentional. I like it man, but hes no Freddie Hubbard lol!!!

  • @eyeswatchingGod Maybe CMU kids spent all that time and energy complaining and put it to use practicing, they could say something and I might actually listen.

  • listen LA MAGIA DEL SAX by Minicillo

  • I was at the CMU concert & I was not impress by Nicholas Paytons performance at all. Although the Bass solo was absolutely amazing & there was a great deal of passion in many of the other solos, but I didnt see it in Paytons solo. I was also deeply upset that he interrupted another trumpet players solo. I believe Nicholas Payton is an incredible trumpet player, but if someone paid $7 to watch an amazing performance, they dont want to be disappointed. & after that performance I felt cheated.

  • someone please post video of Payton at the CMU concert!

  • @gregopvuur i was there, and witnessed the end of his career. trust me, the only future gigs he will get is in his mothers basement. it was that terrible. half the crowd was gone by the end, and he was found the next day walking around with no sleep.

  • 7 dollars....

  • @girlyboy0 wow a whole $7. I gladly pay the $40 for the one day he is at our Jazz fest. And really I highly doubt the whole drugs ordeal. Nick has way to much respect for the music. So could you CMU guys stop ragging on the man!!!!!

  • I was at the CMU concert with Jazz Lab 1 (nice bassist and guitarist, by the way) with my jazz band, and I think that Payton is probably an outstanding trumpet player (listening and watching these videos is answering my question) but he seemed to be sick or something. I am assuming he is sick because i still wish to keep an image of him that doesn't involve drugs or booze before or during a concert. I just didn't like his hat at the clinic earlier that day.

  • I'm the lead player for CMU jazz lab, and when we rehearsed with Nicholas the day before the gig, he sounded like he did in this video. He was rippin along with great licks and ideas.

When it came down to the performance, it was a complete turn around. we were all suprised and confused. Nicholas was there deep down, but he wasn't him that night. Something took ahold of him and it was quite sad. Nicholas needs help with another problem i think.

  • @harde1tm yea im sorry... i had the story a little off

  • What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?

  • Yea, I know. That first solo was like "OH MY GOD!!" That note he hit was crazy... and then we just hung out in the lobby after that. Who else decided to chill in the hall?

  • im glad im not the only who thought he was blown at cmu on friday. he was terrible!!

  • Wish he sounded like this at CMU.... What a joke.... Next time get high on your own free time...

  • well he definitely did not sound like this tonight at cmu jazz fest. wtf was up with that. it was awful.

  • Going to seem him LIVE next Friday, can't wait.

  • I am to. CMU Jazz fest

  • See ya there, I'm in Montrose Jazz Ensamble, Lead Trumpet.

  • So pumped for CMU! Always the best jazz festival!

  • No Place Like Home !

  • tight

  • thats one tight groove

    and some tasty solos

  • That's what I'm talkin bout!

  • who is the drummer?

  • Watch that comment, No one touches Hubbard. Besides, he doesn't have that kind of energy in his playing that Freddie had, but damn- this guy is sick!

Im not feeling the rock rhythm, but he sure is.

  • complex complex music

  • woww what a music was that!

  • i played with Nicholas Payton when i was in my college jazz band. it was way cool

  • where was that at?

  • it was at BYU-Idaho back in 2002. I have noooooo idea how they got him to play at our jazz concert. i have it on a CD. It was alot of fun....

  • i love love love his tone i want it!!!!

  • ray brown always play with great piano players...

    this is real jazz

  • That is Larry Fuller on Piano actually, he was playing with the Ray Brown trio at the time..absolutely superb playing!

  • What a great rhythm!

  • is that billy charlap on piano?

  • gotta love the soul he puts into.

  • amazing

  • where and when is this performance? Is it on dvd?

  • haha the drummer keeps missin it

  • you don't know drumming - he's actually doing a good job of holding all the rambling soloists together

  • Rambling? You realize that there is something called form in jazz right?

  • Mmm, you may be a poet of sound, but not of words:

    rambling=digressive

the form of jazz is often digressive

  • I simply just misunderstood the way you were using "rambling". I took it as a negative.

  • Hey no problem

  • the drummer misses two cues at the end.

  • @coolstruttin1 ...oh.. sure... we gonna report this.

  • great version, tx, awesome rythm section
