Na minha opinião este sr está naquele grupo dos melhores trompetistas jazz de sempre. in my opinion, this sir is between the best jazz trumpet players of all times.
He was in a car accident and his lips were damaged. Give the guy a break! Check out his website for the story. Massive respect to Nicholas Payton. He can play!
@TRBrownn well according to the metronome that I own, the drummer isn't rushing and the tempo stays at a pretty even half note=110 bpm the whole time. but i guess my metronome is broken then and just happened to rush at the exact same speed as the drummer.
everyone needs to shut the fuck up and listen to the music or get off this video....i was trying to watch this video which is awesome and then i scroll down and see idiots arguing about Payton's drug habits.....im sure none of you play anywhere near as good as him....maybe he did embarrass himself but he made a mistake. Its whatever....get over yourselves...look at yourself before you judge others.
videos like this help out alot. got a fake book filled with jazz and most of them don't know even know how they sound. sounds really great by the way.
For anyone who has commented on this bashing CMU students, I would like to clear up something. The Payton you hear in this video is absolutely not (figuratively) who showed up on our campus this February. His poor performance was not a "bad day", but rather the result of the heroin he shot before playing. Those of us on stage watched as THAT artist disappointed a full auditorium and doubtlessly turned away many young minds from America's only genuine institution (that is jazz, not CMU).
@STRON2AM Honestly, I think it is awesome Payton is a heroin addict. Seriously. If he finds joy in something like that and it makes him enjoy playing trumpet more, then why do you have to be all selfish and bash on HIM? If he wants to shoot heroin, that is his own business. You paid money to see him play trumpet. He provided you his service. If you didn't like it, then don't go see him again in the future. Payton is the man and I respect him for his choices.
@STRON2AM Your fucking stupid this was not at all a bad performance Nicholas doesn't do heroin and even if he did you'd have no proof listen to the sweet sounds of his horn and shut the hell up.
You CMU students have a lot of time on your hands. You all seem to be a hateful and vengeful group of small-minded buffoons, posting negative comments about Mr. Payton all over this site. So what if he had a bad night. He's human. Shit happens. How about posting a video of your performances, if you even have any, and let's see how you fare out.
@eyeswatchingGod I agree with you... in my opinion (as a musician) he did a great solo, I'm not a trumpeter buy I certainly know about jazz improvisation and he had absolute domain in all the areas =) great solo!
@eyeswatchingGod He shot up heroin in the dressing room before playing to a packed auditorium of educators and high school musicians who idolized him. He embarrassed himself and very well knew it. He left the building before we had finished playing the last tune and was found hours later strung out of his mind on the steps of the university library. If anyone was a buffoon, It was Payton and I fail to see how being upset about it makes those of us who were there that night small minded.
@STRON2AM Yep, and I'm sure he did it on purpose just to disappoint you. Or maybe the cat has a problem and needs help rather than condemnation. Charlie Parker said: "If you don't FEEL it, it won't come out of your horn". I guess it won't be coming out of yours.
@eyeswatchingGod I am a jazz musician and a jazz lover so I know a bad performance when I hear one and this one is not bad at all. Perhaps he can play better than how he played here but from my ears I heard a swinging jazzin cat. The speed up in the tempo may have been seen as intentional. I like it man, but hes no Freddie Hubbard lol!!!
@eyeswatchingGod Maybe CMU kids spent all that time and energy complaining and put it to use practicing, they could say something and I might actually listen.
I was at the CMU concert & I was not impress by Nicholas Paytons performance at all. Although the Bass solo was absolutely amazing & there was a great deal of passion in many of the other solos, but I didnt see it in Paytons solo. I was also deeply upset that he interrupted another trumpet players solo. I believe Nicholas Payton is an incredible trumpet player, but if someone paid $7 to watch an amazing performance, they dont want to be disappointed. & after that performance I felt cheated.
@gregopvuur i was there, and witnessed the end of his career. trust me, the only future gigs he will get is in his mothers basement. it was that terrible. half the crowd was gone by the end, and he was found the next day walking around with no sleep.
@girlyboy0 wow a whole $7. I gladly pay the $40 for the one day he is at our Jazz fest. And really I highly doubt the whole drugs ordeal. Nick has way to much respect for the music. So could you CMU guys stop ragging on the man!!!!!
I was at the CMU concert with Jazz Lab 1 (nice bassist and guitarist, by the way) with my jazz band, and I think that Payton is probably an outstanding trumpet player (listening and watching these videos is answering my question) but he seemed to be sick or something. I am assuming he is sick because i still wish to keep an image of him that doesn't involve drugs or booze before or during a concert. I just didn't like his hat at the clinic earlier that day.
I'm the lead player for CMU jazz lab, and when we rehearsed with Nicholas the day before the gig, he sounded like he did in this video. He was rippin along with great licks and ideas.
When it came down to the performance, it was a complete turn around. we were all suprised and confused. Nicholas was there deep down, but he wasn't him that night. Something took ahold of him and it was quite sad. Nicholas needs help with another problem i think.
What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?
Yea, I know. That first solo was like "OH MY GOD!!" That note he hit was crazy... and then we just hung out in the lobby after that. Who else decided to chill in the hall?
You played great!

Mmm, you may be a poet of sound, but not of words:
rambling=digressive
the form of jazz is often digressive
