As a Western Buddhist, I like to take His Holiness' advice to keep one's cultural heritage intact (ie. to continue in one's historic religious tradition) with a grain of salt. He's not insisting that people remain Christians, or Buddhists, if they no longer feel that these traditions make sense to them. Certainly Christianity makes no sense to me, so of course I shouldn't continue in it - THAT would only lead to confusion.
