I went to Scotland last year. It was freezing and rained non-stop. The only food was haggis, deep fried Mars Bars and shortbread & everyone is fat. Scotland won the first war of independance, then they tried to start another war, and never won that one either. Scotland only got occupied, the English tried to take our independance and never succeeded.
It's too bad this movie was made about 5 years before CGI made it possible to show it as it actually was, with a BRIDGE in it. Oh well, not Mel Gibson's fault. But there are still so many historical inaccuracies in the movie I can't watch it anymore.

@Panz82 The message is a good one, but I am distracted by all the historical errors. It's like reading a book with a good story but a bunch of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. It ruins the book for some people anyway. And it's not like Braveheart took a few liberties here and there, it is ranked as one of the top ten most historically inaccurate movies ever made.

As I've said repeatedly what is actually meant by British may differ between people and at least some who say they aren't British are making a political point and choosing to ignore the geographic and cultural aspects. In the 2003 figures from the Scottish Social Attitudes poll when asked if they were Scottish or British (ie not given any other options) then 72% of people in Scotand said they were Scottish and 20% said they were British. However when given the option to identify those ways or as Scottish and British then those who said they were only Scottish fell to 31% and only British to 4%. With 60% identifying as both Scottish and British. In
majority of both Scots and English people do also identify as British. It doesn't stop them being Scottish or English too. We all have multi-layered identities and as I keep saying the term British will mean different things to different people anyway. They may be talking politically or they may be talking geographically or culturally. What somebody on the other wide of the ocean thinks is hardly important especially when they seem so ill informed.

This one time I went to Scotland. It rained non-stop and was freezing cold. Everyone is overweight and has false teeth. All the men are transvestites and the women look like men. I was attacked by a swarm of midges and thrown out of a pub for saying that the Loch Ness monster didn't exist. Everyone is constantly drunk and there is a very high level of MS due to the horrible weather. I couldn't sleep at night due to the constant bagpipe noise. I am never going back.

It ruins the book for some people anyway. And it's not like Braveheart took a few liberties here and there, it is ranked as one of the top ten most historically inaccurate movies ever made.

As I've said repeatedly what is actually meant by British may differ between people and at least some who say they aren't British are making a political point and choosing to ignore the geographic and cultural aspects. Even an SNP MSP recently claimed that independence would strengthen Britishness in Scotland.

Anyway, being that those two nations are united, that means that there is no such thing as Scottish or English anymore. Your now called British since the nations united. Example would be the states of the US uniting to form one nation and all being called Americans and actually being happy with that name. You don't go around calling people Pennsylvanians because they live in Pennsylvania

@gaconnochie I don't need to understand them. Take a couple wars for example. If an ally or enemy asks where they are from, they will say England if they are English and Scottish if they are from Scotland. It just make things so much damn easier. Don't make sense to make thing more difficult by saying "I'm British." Like if you needed to go home because your injured in a war and you say your British. That isn't detailed enough. I'm sure the English and Scottish have their own bases.

@DarkestWolfSoul That would be the case, if asking them "What part of Britian are you from?" proved to be too challanging. Both England and Scotland are parts of Great Britian, so they have every right to call themselves British. Besides in a war, countries like parts of GB are usually in a union where they have one main command for all of them, so saying either British or English/Scottish/Welsh doesn't really make a difference.

I don't know why this other poster can't grab this simple truth. Of course if the union broke up then Scottish Regiments would form a Scottish army and same with the rest. @DarkestWolfSoul the reason why in Britian they call themselves English and Scottish and in US they call themselves americans not pensylvanians is because Pensylvania is a state, not a legitimate country, while in Britian, England and Scotland are two legitimate countries with their own governments chooseing to be labelled as a unity - Great Britian. Pensylvania is a state of a country, therefore the comparison doesn't apply. It's like calling a guy from London - Kingstonian.

For those not from these parts to get an idea of what I mean. In the 2003 figures from the Scottish Social Attitudes poll when asked if they were Scottish or British (ie not given any other options) then 72% of people in Scotand said they were Scottish and 20% said they were British. However when given the option to identify those ways or as Scottish and British then those who said they were only Scottish fell to 31% and only British to 4%. With 60% identifying as both Scottish and British. In

majority of both Scots and English people do also identify as British. It doesn't stop them being Scottish or English too. We all have multi-layered identities and as I keep saying the term British will mean different things to different people anyway. They may be talking politically or they may be talking geographically or culturally. What somebody on the other wide of the ocean thinks is hardly important especially when they seem so ill informed.

That includes everyone on the island of Britain. You people are there because people settled there just like here in North America and the rest of the world. What you don't seem to understand is that even more ardent nationalists who'll deny to the core a sense of Britishness tend to baulk when Americans (as some do) get mixed up between the concepts of England and Britain and talk as if they are one and the same thing. created in 1707 with the union between Scotland and England (Wales was legally part of England at that time). These are plain facts and have nothing to do with my opinion. If Scotland goes independent then I have no idea what the remaining UK would call itself. The UK of England, Wales and Northern Ireland perhaps! They wouldn't necessarily use the name Britain as GB itself would be defunct. Who knows though we will hopefully find out.

The results were maybe not surprisingly not that different as far as England goes. I'm a nationalist myself and that is why I was trying to explain that British means more than one thing. There is a geographic and cultural Britishness as well as the political idea. Hence not all people who identify in some way as British are unionists. Being that as it may, each nation has its own name and nationality see? American, Mexican, and Canadian. Britain is the name of the island. Did I lose you yet? England is a nation. They are English. When James VI of Scotland became King of England in 1603 he styled himself King of Great Britain and pushed for a union but both the Scottish and English parlaiments would have no truck with it. So at a stretch you could maybe use the term British for joint Scottish and English actions in the 17thC ie the Plantation of Ulster. But it makes no sense to

@gaconnochie Yeah thats true, it was the Scottish king james when he inherited the throne of England, he wanted a united Britain, and it was king James who had the union flag designed for him. But the rest or parilement in England didn't want to join with Scotland at that time, it wasn't till a hundred years later they would.
