I can hear everything from The Who all the way to Radiohead in here. It's amazing what an influence Roy had/has on so many artists. He was influenced by Leadbelly and Guthrie and now he has become them. Hats off.
I think Roy is a Goose . I remember one gig . MY mate deliberately refused to give me any of his gear and I got very very drunk . In fact I heckled Roy. And He told me to shut up. Sorry Roy. I am ten years sober. Brilliant. Tom Tiddler!S!!
Does anyone no if the film Made is available Roy Harper made this film back in the 70's with whispering Bob Harris. Last time I watched was way back in the early 80's. If anyone Knows something about this I would be very interested
My Best Sixtieth Psychomusical Birthday Present. I was too poor to attend in person. Now at 60 I know why I wanted to be there. Don't Dr/Drink an drive. Not sure its safe to even play this in a car that is moving. End of an Era coming...............
Roy ... oh brother... those were the days... Tibetan Ukrainian Mountain Troupe.... dogs on a string... Gong... holy moly... and Roy.. have to say seeing Roy Harper and Jimmy Page jamming live at Cambridge Folk in 83 when I was still a teenager was awesome... seen Roy some 20 times.. and everytime was never boring that's for sure... bad, sometimes, but boring never. Just keep on keeping on Roy!
I've got the original - number 5/500 - couldn't believe it when it arrived (mail order in those days of course) and started with THAT. ROFLMAO - the man IS a genius, probably he will be recognised 10 years after he dies.
Well that's one of the best sales pitches I think I've ever heard... plus it's so long since I've heard "I'm Really Stoned" that I'd forgotten it existed. I was a Harper anorak in my late teens. In fact, the first gig I ever went to was Roy at Hardman House in Liverpool. It was a couple of weeks after the Hillsborough disaster and Roy's dad had died at about the same time. To this day it's still the best gig I've ever been to.. open wounds were healed that night. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
I hate de white man and his doctrinaire refuse.... and de man who turned you all loose!
Roy Roy Roy. Why did you sing "DE white man" was you a jamaican or something. Not that it matters now it was so long ago. Happy days but I hate hash now. Roy is living proof that it messes up your head. I used to love this guys music though.
That sums it up well. Brilliant songwriter and guitarist, but a chronic career suicider. He might have wanted to try a few weeks without the puff. I'm still a fan of the music, but they guy is just way too erratic.
Roy wouldnt be a TRUE folk singer if he wasnt erratic and dodgy. Led Zepplin made him ride in the back limo with John Bonhsm...lol. He could have been the new Syd Barrett if he hadn't run off for liquor...
Didnt Roy play USA dates a few years ago? I had a live torrent from Seattle with Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth in the crowd... lost it tho when a harddrive crashed. Forgot the date...
He did several gigs in Canada in 1994 and at least one show in NY (Bottom Line or Knitting Factory?)around that same time. Thurston Moore was there.
I used to listen to alot live Roy stuff on cassette. I still have them, but never play 'em anymore. Should probably put them on CD before they turn to dust.
The intro is priceless, 7 mins of Roy trying to be apologetic and not quite managing it. The way he talked reminded me of the late Alistair Cooke with whom I could never quite tell when one sentence was going to end and the next was going to start. Or what exactly he was on about with his metaphors. Good music audio on this one.
By Jove, what a meaty feast of Roy Harper. Thanks for sharing it with us. I have been listening to his stuff since 1971. Roy presents us with a strong case for NOT decriminalising cannabis, in my view.
I loved the way he used to cadge spliffs from the audience and then forget or repeat whole verses or rely on the audience 'filling in' the bits he'd forget and my god, he can talk for England :)
This man is a genius and sometimes he puts the ball in the back of the net and other times he misses but its still worth watching and supporting the game
That's the one. I mistook the year for the customary herbal reasons related to the period. Harper stick-thin in a brown leather jacket. Both gigs were unbelievable. Can you remember who the band he shared with on the second gig? I'm sure it was Graham something Retaliation or something similar.
Thanks for the correction though. Nice to know that there are other survivors of the period
I have been a Roy Harper fan for 30 years but that was a funny comment, the sad thing is that this video goes agains everything that he sang about :>(
fan for 30 years and the man can still blow me away. He must be one of musics best kept secrets.
My friend who hadn't even heard of him a week ago sat through the film with me, on the strength of that she summed him up as 'a troubled genius' and I'm not about to argue with her.
And just for a moment I wished my life, to see our friends all around us.
I have never seen it and it was amazing to take a little trip down memory lane. That Mark Ellen interview was where I became a Harper fan 20 years ago!
Great poet, great guitarist, superb songwriter, top stoner. Roy's got it all!

First saw RH in 1969 at Mothers in Erdington. Every performance was different, sometimes incoherent, frequently epiphanic. Always very, very special.

I thought it was 1970 at Mothers and he did'nt turn up till after midnight so he came again a week later for those who missed him.
