I'm from the Netherlands and here we pay ~100€ (~143$) a month for basic healthcare. Includes operations, regular visits to the doctor and dentist, the majority of medicine etc. No restriction on location, free choice of doctor, hospital etc.

And NO ONE is excluded for preconsisting illnesses or whatever, EVERYONE has access.

Here is an idea, why not compromise? Instead of making single payer a government run insurance policy, why not start it off as government run for a year or two, then after it is up and running turn it over as a nonprofit private company. Do something like they are GM. The government owns it for now and then turns it over to the private sector. It will offer everything Dems want in coverage, but it will later have to support itself with its premiums. That way it won't cost taxpayers.

The true "left of the left" supports a single payer health care reform such as HR676. The compromise is HR3200 which keeps employment based private insurance in place but adds a public "option".

Note that we already have/had so called "not for profits". It's call Blue Cross. They failed in numerous ways including controlling costs.

The public option will, after initial set up, have to support itself through premiums.

Blue Cross won't cover some people with precondition though. I think most people against the public option are afraid of socialised healthcare or they are on medicare and are afraid the public option will possible cause rationed healthcare treatment for the eldery. Recently I contacted my provider regarding changing my current insurance. I've had my current policy for just over a year. She informed me that if I do so, that I would be put back on the 12 month long pre-existing condition clause I already went through on my existing policy.
