@ ItsKamaal - I dunno for sure lol but you can generally predict who wins! Can you imagine their faces if they had called out 'and the winner of best british female is....AD....oops no it's Kate Bush?!!' I'm just glad this was the the first award so I didn't have to watch the rest of it!
This new album is one of her best album's ever, it really touches my heart and soul. You are such a special and amazing artist. Kate Bush for me you are one of the best ever. Really love your work, your passion, your heart, your honesty. be blessed, Duncan
This sad, no way. I have alot of emotions with her music, but sad isnt one, with this song. I love this album, and ppl in the U.S need to wake the he** up. I know it is a hit everywhere but here, these people are just stupid.
Funny that Kate's done a song like this, 2012 could be the year of official discovery of the Sasquatch beings in America, that's the Yeti there if you will. One sad story goes some hick shot a female Bigfoot and her child. Apparently 100% positive DNA proof's about to be published in a report by Dr. Melba Ketchum, don't know when it's out, her peers worldwide are studying it right now so maybe later this year. There's also new research going on in the so-called Erickson Project, evidence too.
@reclaimerReclaimer This is super interesting. Kate always had a way of seemingly writing about something that would become in some way topical or relevant AFTER the event.
if you don't feel sad when you hear 'the kick inside' then I dunno what's up with you. By the way, you're allowed to say 'Hell' these days- see, I just said it and nothing untoward happened.
beautiful music, this albus 50 words for snow. The more I listen the more I hear.. Steve Gadd is a brilliant drummer, very tasteful. The co-singers are so right.. The winter may last long with this album and i won't mind.
@jason25k that's a bit harsh isn't it!? ;) Tori Amos is also a very good artists in my opinion, but obviously Kate is #1 of them all. Wild Man still a big hit for me. One of her best, without any doubts. "Banging on the doors" HAHA
Just 3 weeks in the album chart and already "50 Words........." has attained Gold sales status (equivalent to "Never For Ever"s album sales - which hot No.1). Would love to a revamped version of "Snowed In At Wheeler Street" released as a single - Kate and Elton, two legendary artists - it would surely be a smash and send "Snow" soaring back up the album charts. The album, as a whole, doesn't lend itself to a singles market, but only because it is far too sublime for most latter day listeners.
... but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate 50 WFS. Wild Man is great and Misty is absolutely moving to me. The whole album is so in tune with the winter atmosphere, creating a truly wintry landscape. Alhough it's too nostalgic for my taste it is still magical (...maybe except Snowed In...) Well, Kate Bush is a true artist, I can only thank her for the beautiful music she makes.
Spring is coming and Bertie is older... I wish Kate would write now some music which is more optimistic and has those enchanting melodies like in albums before which expose so well this fascinating combination of her gentleness and strength. 50 WFS show she is still great and innovative, but I find the album so depressing at times. I hope that after some time of a well deserved rest Kate will take me on a different journey. Mature, like in Aerial and 50 WFS but more cheerful. Spring is coming...
the best album by kate.....hounds of love(1985!!)....ariel...is ok.....directet cut...is ok....the new album 50 words of snow...is ok......best album...hounds of love,the kick inside...never by never!
I am loving "Lake Tahoe" and "Misty" at the moment. "Among Angels" is creeping up too. You really gotta take time with this album - and it's time worth taking. "Twisted branches and frozen garden, crushed and stolen grasses from slumbering lawn" WOW! Who else could come up with such a beautiful and poetic lyric ??? KB is still on top form.
haven't yet got the new cd, it's a pressie for christmas but can not wait as it's always mad as a box of frogs but fabulous in only ways kate fans will understand .... found ariel brill didn't for a good reason by directors cut cos it's remakes of previous kate songs and i like them the way they are, so enjoying snipits till chrismas morning.
@Yetaxa Funny how opinions can differ so greatly - I am a fan since the 80s and own all her albums but find CD 2 of Aerial unlistenable (and I know other fans who feel the same). Personally, it's about as far from being a "masterpiece" as I can imagine.
It is interesting as always .........love Andy Fairweather Low as well a very underated artist his albums are always musically great and i love his voice. This builds nicely and is another very very good song from Kate. Happy Christmas all Kate & AFL fans.
I think that is a really good point, her obsession with electronic music (I blame Peter Gabriel who had a bad influence on her!) has ecclipsed her music and each album has got worse. If you compare The Kick Inside to 50 words, just look at the difference when it comes to how she uses her vocals and the melodies, she really knew how to draw the listener into her madness but now she puts you to sleep!
Also, unless she's changed her preferred modes of travel, I doubt she's ever been to Lake Tahoe in person. I second what many of you are saying...she needs to get to a few clubs, listen to what's current....much of this stuff sounds 20 years out of date. I remember when Yes went away for years...and then came out with "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in the early '80s...it was still Yes but current sounding.
Kate really rocked my world in the '70s with her first album and I followed her religiously album after album...but unfortunately she fell many years ago into the very seductive trap of relying on electronics to craft a song..and her songwriting suffers because of it. The last few albums (Red Shoes and Ariel and about 50% of Sensual World) are plain dull. This unfortunatly, sounds just as dull. The torch was passed years ago- Chantal Kreviazuk, Tori Amos, Feist, et al - much more interesting
@dextrumcornu Aerial is dull?! HOMEWORK: 1. Sit in some isolated place where nobody will disturb you 2. Put your headphones on 3. Put on "Nocturn" Aerial CD2 and close your eyes. If you didn't get the feeling of it, repeat step 3 at least two more times. It's the same Kate who's written "Man with the child..." - sensitive, nostalgic and very feminine, but musically it's on much higher level. Pay attention to all details - each note seems to be in a perfect place. So atmospheric, sooo beautiful!
to my opinion, you're perfectly right. from "sunset" to "aerial", CD 2 is absolute masterpiece. "Nocturn" is one of my favourite songs of kate now, maybe with a coral room.
I've been a fan since 1978 when I was all of 7 years old. I think this album is beautiful. I'm personally thrilled there's been 2 albums in a year, she is too by the sound of her interviews! Maybe the reviewers here don't like Elton (I'm not a MASSIVE fan but he IS a great musician), Mr Fry (I like him!) et al, but SHE invited them to the album! And I hardly think you can call a 13 year old boy 'pompous'...none of you are parents then?! No album is ever going to be for everybody...but to say sh
@CloudsBeyond I think she has become so disengaged from her listeners over the years that she has lost track of what used to be appealing about her music. She really needs a reality check! Can't believe her album is No 5 in the charts - just makes you realise the state of the music industry!
@bondvillain Do you not think it is worthy of a Number 5 placing ? I think what makes one reach that realisation about the state of the music industry is the the immense volume of utter rubbish that is being churned out and gobbled up. Given that this is the case I am surprised - and somewhat disappointed - that Kate is not at Number 1 !
I often listen longingly to Kate's albums of the early years - "The Kick Inside", "Lionheart" and "Never For Ever". But this is Kate Bush today. 33 years on can one expect that she will STILL be making the kind of music she did at 19 ?. She has grown personally and thus has grown too musically. Her latter-day material is just as exceptional as her early work if one ceases to make comparisons. The music on "Snow" represents a place to which time has taken her - different but still brilliant.
@mallelek1990 I detect more than a mere undertone of sarcasm here. Yes, I know my punctuation needs some attention but so does your grammar. You offer your congratulations to my punctuation ? Should you not be offering them to me, on my punctuation ? Moral of the story : nobody is perfect - not even you !
i listened once again the whole album with headphones at night , and Lake Tahoe and Misty are gorgeous songs, really, and the melodies are here, so do the lyrics. wonderful job.
i grew up with her music, and sometimes me too i miss her "madness" of old days. But i fully understand the introspective way she took, because she's older, and as a 46 years old one, i feel connected to the voice and the themes more than ever. and really, her voice ! i love the deep and sweet sound it has now.
@billida i miss the madness but now she takes time to sing in aerial she take 1 minute to say "how long we have waited for feelin sooooooooooooooo and then the chorus......she takes her time and every note is where it has to be she s still mad but ina different way , lol dave.
Part of the issue with Kate Bush in 2011 and the artist in 1984 (or wherever you'd like to set you benchmark for her best music) is that she is much less performative now. Gone it seems are the odd music videos in which she beguiled with a mix of the erotic and the historical. When I listen to the new recording, I long for that theatrical Kate I knew when I was growing up. I think that many of us miss the opportunity to recast ourselves in her many guises. Think Stevie Nicks with no twirl.
I have followed Kate for 30+ years, her production skills and attention to detail are second to none. To suggest she cannot compose are obviously ludicrous, she has turned out some absolute classics, and continues to do so.
Yes, I love her, and I want her to marry me.
Marry me Kate, you will only get this one opportunity....
@ggofthe do you think 50 Words is her best album? One of the best?I've yet to hear ONE fan say it is her best or even one of the best (unless they've been smoking something strong, you will find few if any that will say it is her best album).Even the deluded gullible die hards that hail anything Kate does as a masterpiece, yet to hear any say it is her best work. Here is Paul Oldfield doing detailed review of the album, listen closely to what he says regarding it: watch?v=E0bcIWvE-3g
have you only heard kate's interviews, like the one she gave to jamie cullum ? she explains her intentions with the album the process of it, and in no way she can be said pretentious or whatever. i would'nt say this is one of her best albums (too slow for my taste), but surely weird, interesting, and her work on arrangements and her voice is simply great. PS : your link is reallly insulting now, you're definitely a hater troll.
@CloudsBeyond whatever does kate will ever be at a least a level up the most of the music the other singers do. this is not the best. neither directors but listen to this womans work in directors cut u shiver. kate is kate and she can do what she wants because she on a higher ground use eyes, heart, ears, blood, snow, light, laughing, child joking, is a kate that grow. thank u kate u saved me many times.david
@CloudsBeyond Sincerely, i really like it. If you are or was a fan of the lady, you should agree that her biggest power is not her originality, even not her vocals but her storytelling power. So i am very happy with this disc, it reminds the second part of Hounds of love. I don't understand when you say that you don't want to hear her son... what other fragile voice could express a snowflake ? couldn't you hear all the magical and breath in Lake tahoe ? finally, did she change or did YOU change?
@CloudsBeyond Poor CloudsBeyond... Should'nt you get a life ? sometimes, i try to listen to things and i discover it dislike, like rihanna, by example. so i put a comment to say how i dislike and then... i go away. Because i don't care ! But you, you stay, you continue to give the same things. I believe people call that "trolling". that is what you do. If you had different argumentation, that would be correct, but here you just pollute the comments... it is sad...
I find it quite extraordinary that someone would judge the value of an album by how many individual tracks it contains. That's like judging the value of a cake by how many pieces it's been cut into. Try listening to some of Mike Oldfield's work - before he started including singles on his albums, there used to be only two tracks on each LP - one on each side. Did that make them poor value for money? Well ask the 15 million or so people that bought Tubular Bells.
@LegendOfKingArthur before the album was released , it was known it would be only 7 tracks averaging several minutes each - which raised suspisions of self indulgence & pretentiousness. If they were 7 killer tracks that would be different, they aren't even mediocre. 50 Words contains least tracks of any album thus far. Comparisons to Mike Oldfield are irrelevant, his longest works are mainly or all instrumental, Kate does not have compositional skills to do such work.
has not been released here yet, but if this is an indicator, sign me up. As others have pointed out, either the artist is creating what you like, or is not. The decision of acceptance is individual, but the artwork stands, accepted or not. Kate Bush has always been this way, not writing for the masses, but nevertheless, affecting music that the masses listen to in strange and profound ways. Yeh, that just means, love Kate Bush!
Sad to have to agree. I'm afraid that success (at any reasonable level) seems to spell doom for most creative geniuses. We get four or five great albums at best and then the rot sets in.
Been an Kate Bush fan from 1983, adored her and loved her music......but somehow I feel she's losing the magic...too bad. I do like 50 words for snow, but I need to give it some more time I guess....
AVOK 23 I got your private message 4 times now on different days, same message (see below). Just to let you know I got it and read it, no need to resend it again, thanks.
Avok23 sent me private message on here 'Hey man, I apologize I did end up looking a complete fool. As for homophobic comments I regret them strongly, truth be told I do feel attraction sometimes for men and it makes me feel angry though I'm not gay, it is something I need to work on for sure. So please ignore any comments on here I made that seemed foolish or offensive, they were not meant. As for opinions on Kate Bush music each to their own. Peace bro I'm out'. Respect to him to say it.
@yousurfer2 banging on the drum = well known slang for whacking off! Just incase you were unaware. In 'Sat In Your Lap' she talked of this using normal name for it.
@CloudsBeyond "poopy pants"? "nothing...offensive"? I don't need to grow up. I'm a woman in the late thirties with musical education plus two masters (since you emphasise so much how educated you are). I don't need clear tunes to be satisified with music and I understand similies. I'm not really going to get to the low level of discussion you are trying to hold here and answer you in such a appaling manner as you do here to different people on every single page. You have an attitude problem.
@WOW1529 I can listen to and play the most complex jazz fusion, classical too, even metal. Of course pop too. Something does not have to be commercial to be good, 50 Words is not commercial it is just plain AWFUL - worse it is Kate's most boring & uncreative album ever - even die hard fans must admit it is by far her least creative. Could have been outtakes from 'Aerial' several years back. Kate could do 50 Words in her sleep & prob did; unfortunately she decided to release it.
@CloudsBeyond I think we got your point now, for several days you don't stop repeating yourself so much that it seems weird. You don't like the album, fine. Some other people do. I'm not a blind fan, i don't love everything on it, but saying there is no melodies on the album is far from true, and some songs are beautiful.
This is actually the first Kate Bush track I've heard and I have not stopped listen to it since a friend adviced me to go to this video. I got the album. And I'm now a fan!! The album makes me speechless!!!
Im not a massive Kate Bush fan, but I like her music. I got 'Directors Cut' and I was quite impressed. As soon as I heard she was doing another album (50 Words For Snow) I thought stuff the ps3 game I wanted, and so I got her album. I put it on, turned off the lights and I was blown away! One word, dont download this album, buy it and give Kate the credit she deserves - curtis8516
Avok23 sent me private message on here 'Hey man, I apologize I did end up looking a complete fool. @LegendOfKingArthur - Absolutely ..... so why does she feel the need to disguise herself from the World ?? There are so many of us who would love to see her lovely, expressive face ....
@GODHATESWBC Well that you must ask her. She seems a very modest woman and perhaps isn't quite aware of how much in awe of her some of us are. She's never been one to do as is expected of her though, and good for her. I feel she's earned the right to do as she pleases.
@GODHATESWBC why? Head disappeared so far up own booty following the reclusive image people have of her - no TV appearances live or interviews, do a few radio interviews then vanish again for years = getting very tedious, it does not add to mystique or paints a picture of reclusive artist, rather it paints a picture of 'I really can't be bothered with this, nor care about my fans, I'll release this self indulgent mess for few fresh bucks in the bank & just to see what folks make of it'.
Snowed in at wheeler street really came off a waste of both her and Elton's abilities, and 50 words for snow only reminded me of how much longer I had to listen to it until it was over. That that I have conveyed the bad, the other 5 songs out of 7 are actually very enjoyable. Some even take you on a wonderful journey if you allow yourself to get caught in them. I suggest reading the lyrics as you listen, they flow like stories. Its fun seeing how she is expressing herself these days.
After "Director´s cut" finally a real new album. I love the fact it´s a concept album, I love the songwriting, I love the whole ambience. This album is a treasure hidden in the snow and I just love it. Thank you Kate!
Why is everyone saying "this is as bad as aerial"? I love Aerial, it's one of her best albums! Just because it's different, not normal pop music, doesn't make it bad. I've only listened to this song so far, and I really like it.
@RoobeeBlue Not everyone say that at all. Just some people in the commentaries. but most of listeners seem to like 50 words very much. The same for reviewers who compare it to Hounds of love :-)
Love, Like or eh... doesn't really matter. The artist creates. We take the journey with them or we don't. Our choice. I listened to the whole album on NPR Music First Listen. I liked enough of what I heard to pre-order it; should be here tomorrow. I will listen to it multiple times before I form a full opinion. As with any artist, even my favs, I don't like everything they produce. But... I love Kate's body of work and respect her art immensely.
as someone who knows very little about Kate Bush and her music, I really like this album. This is an outstanding song, can hear a lot of 90's era Bowie influence in there.
So Nice to hear Kate loosen up, the live feel of Directors cut has somehow made it's way into Bush's 50WFS. Gone are the days of her love at first sight melody's. The new songs demand that you get to know them better before they put out and put out they do! "lake Tahoe" is sublime!
l don't care what people say, l have spent the whole day listening to the new album and love every single song. It was WELL worth the wait. It's very different from anything she has done before and that's what l like about Kate's music. It's always so different. There will never be another Hounds of Love album but l wouldn't want another one like that. That wouldn't be what we fans would expect.
remember when you first heard The Red Shoes album?? l thought "what the hell??" but it grew on me.
@bratattack5 This new album hasn't grown on me. I've evolved in years and have adjusted to her music that she makes for herself and for that l have loved the new album from the moment my CD started to play it. She even has Steven Fry talking Klingon for Gawd sake. How brilliant is that??
Sunday Express or Mail on Sunday in UK review gave it 2 out of 5 (very generous, should have been 1 out of 5), anyway they summed 50 Words up best saying it was not an album from Kate Bush that gave us Wutherhing Heights, Hounds of Love, etc; it was an album by the Kate Bush that gave us 'Aerial'! Excellently put & hit the nail right on the head.
those who are interested should definitely hear the interview she gave to jamie cullum, very interesting. she is never "pretentious", but honest all the time, and you have the pleasure to hear her talking about her work with passion, and hear her laughter, which is already music !

Dear Kate.
It sometimes seems to me,
that you have placed,
a direct line,
from your voice,
and your piano,
straight to the heart,
of my soul.
So thank you,
and goodbye

@Yetaxa Funny how opinions can differ so greatly - I am a fan since the 80s and own all her albums but find CD 2 of Aerial unlistenable (and I know other fans who feel the same). Personally, it's about as far from being a "masterpiece" as I can imagine.

I think that is a really good point, her obsession with electronic music (I blame Peter Gabriel who had a bad influence on her!) has ecclipsed her music and each album has got worse. If you compare The Kick Inside to 50 words, just look at the difference when it comes to how she uses her vocals and the melodies, she really knew how to draw the listener into her madness but now she puts you to sleep!
bondvillain 3 months ago
Also, unless she's changed her preferred modes of travel, I doubt she's ever been to Lake Tahoe in person. I second what many of you are saying...she needs to get to a few clubs, listen to what's current....much of this stuff sounds 20 years out of date. I remember when Yes went away for years...and then came out with "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in the early '80s...it was still Yes but current sounding.
dextrumcornu 3 months ago
Kate really rocked my world in the '70s with her first album and I followed her religiously album after album...but unfortunately she fell many years ago into the very seductive trap of relying on electronics to craft a song..and her songwriting suffers because of it. The last few albums (Red Shoes and Ariel and about 50% of Sensual World) are plain dull. This unfortunatly, sounds just as dull. The torch was passed years ago- Chantal Kreviazuk, Tori Amos, Feist, et al - much more interesting
dextrumcornu 3 months ago
@dextrumcornu Aerial is dull?! HOMEWORK: 1. Sit in some isolated place where nobody will disturb you 2. Put your headphones on 3. Put on "Nocturn" Aerial CD2 and close your eyes. If you didn't get the feeling of it, repeat step 3 at least two more times. It's the same Kate who's written "Man with the child..." - sensitive, nostalgic and very feminine, but musically it's on much higher level. Pay attention to all details - each note seems to be in a perfect place. So atmospheric, sooo beautiful!
WOW1529 3 months ago
@WOW1529
to my opinion, you're perfectly right. from "sunset" to "aerial", CD 2 is absolute masterpiece. "Nocturn" is one of my favourite songs of kate now, maybe with a coral room.

@CloudsBeyond I think she has become so disengaged from her listeners over the years that she has lost track of what used to be appealing about her music. She really needs a reality check! Can't believe her album is No 5 in the charts - just makes you realise the state of the music industry!
bondvillain 3 months ago
@bondvillain Do you not think it is worthy of a Number 5 placing ? I think what makes one reach that realisation about the state of the music industry is the the immense volume of utter rubbish that is being churned out and gobbled up. Given that this is the case I am surprised - and somewhat disappointed - that Kate is not at Number 1 !
ThePROTO1TYPE 3 months ago
I often listen longingly to Kate's albums of the early years - "The Kick Inside", "Lionheart" and "Never For Ever". But this is Kate Bush today. 33 years on can one expect that she will STILL be making the kind of music she did at 19 ?. She has grown personally and thus has grown too musically. Her latter-day material is just as exceptional as her early work if one ceases to make comparisons. The music on "Snow" represents a place to which time has taken her - different but still brilliant.

Think Stevie Nicks with no twirl.
wnorthcross 3 months ago
I have followed Kate for 30+ years, her production skills and attention to detail are second to none. To suggest she cannot compose are obviously ludicrous, she has turned out some absolute classics, and continues to do so.
Yes, I love her, and I want her to marry me.
Marry me Kate, you will only get this one opportunity....
Oh well it was worth a try. Bye for now, John

@CloudsBeyond
have you only heard kate's interviews, like the one she gave to jamie cullum ? she explains her intentions with the album the process of it, and in no way she can be said pretentious or whatever. i would'nt say this is one of her best albums (too slow for my taste), but surely weird, interesting, and her work on arrangements and her voice is simply great. PS : your link is reallly insulting now, you're definitely a hater troll.

MrDaveboy73 3 months ago
@CloudsBeyond Sincerely, i really like it. If you are or was a fan of the lady, you should agree that her biggest power is not her originality, even not her vocals but her storytelling power. So i am very happy with this disc, it reminds the second part of Hounds of love. I don't understand when you say that you don't want to hear her son... what other fragile voice could express a snowflake ? couldn't you hear all the magical and breath in Lake tahoe ? finally, did she change or did YOU change?

@CloudsBeyond Poor CloudsBeyond... If you had different argumentation, that would be correct, but here you just pollute the comments... it is sad...

@ggofthe
+1 (or maybe + 1000) i already said something like this. it is the exact definition of what trolling is.
billida 3 months ago
I find it quite extraordinary that someone would judge the value of an album by how many individual tracks it contains. That's like judging the value of a cake by how many pieces it's been cut into. Try listening to some of Mike Oldfield's work - before he started including singles on his albums, there used to be only two tracks on each LP - one on each side. Did that make them poor value for money? Well ask the 15 million or so people that bought Tubular Bells.
LegendOfKingArthur 3 months ago
@LegendOfKingArthur before the album was released , it was known it would be only 7 tracks averaging several minutes each - which raised suspisions of self indulgence & pretentiousness. If they were 7 killer tracks that would be different, they aren't even mediocre. 50 Words contains least tracks of any album thus far. Comparisons to Mike Oldfield are irrelevant, his longest works are mainly or all instrumental, Kate does not have compositional skills to do such work.
CloudsBeyond 3 months ago
has not been released here yet, but if this is an indicator, sign me up.

WOW1529 3 months ago
@WOW1529 I can listen to and play the most complex jazz fusion, classical too, even metal. Of course pop too. Something does not have to be commercial to be good, 50 Words is not commercial it is just plain AWFUL - worse it is Kate's most boring & uncreative album ever - even die hard fans must admit it is by far her least creative. Could have been outtakes from 'Aerial' several years back. Kate could do 50 Words in her sleep & prob did; unfortunately she decided to release it.

@LegendOfKingArthur - Absolutely ..... so why does she feel the need to disguise herself from the World ?? There are so many of us who would love to see her lovely, expressive face ....
GODHATESWBC 3 months ago
@GODHATESWBC Well that you must ask her. She seems a very modest woman and perhaps isn't quite aware of how much in awe of her some of us are. She's never been one to do as is expected of her though, and good for her. I feel she's earned the right to do as she pleases.
LegendOfKingArthur 3 months ago 11

So Nice to hear Kate loosen up, the live feel of Directors cut has somehow made it's way into Bush's 50WFS. Gone are the days of her love at first sight melody's. The new songs demand that you get to know them better before they put out and put out they do! "lake Tahoe" is sublime!
