Give free advice by any chance? I have the footwork under control but how do I include the hands? Is their rudiments that work best with Latin rhythms? Their must be!! I'm confused on where to go, nothing I play sounds Latin even when including the footwork.. HELP!
@ExEurasian Keep practising your flams and paradiddles, but theres not really any rudiments that are specifically for latin. get yourself a good book or two on latin rhythms and learn them all.
How do you develop the independence to play anything on top of the beat you start at 0:05? I know that's so elementary in this genre but I mainly play rock and I'm trying to branch out.
@ilikehairbands Its all about repetition, you have to be able to play the foot pattern without even thinking about it. Then you can add the hand patterns on top easily
@ilikehairbands it's called a bossa nova pattern. If you want to learn it i suggest picking up a simple drum exercise book and instead of playing their bass and left foot patterns, just replace them with the bossa nova(bass on every quarter note and the 16th note before the quarter, and high hat on the off 8th.)
Amazing solo!! I heard a friend play a latin drum solo at a party and now I want to a buy a kit again and start taking lessons. I was still a complete novice when I stopped playing, so I don't know a lot...would getting an electric kit be adequate for playing this style. I cant get an acoustic kit do to where I live.
@estuben87 thanks man ! An acoustic kit is much better to play and learn on than an electronic... but if you have to go electronic then go for the high end kits like roland td-20 or yamaha dtx 900, they are the closest you can get to real drums. the cheaper electronic kits dont respond well, and some of them dont allow rimshots.
Quick question for anyone thats been playing drums for a while. ive been playing for two years and im pretty good. but i feel like ive hit a wall i havent been able to make any noticeable progress for about two months. i dont like rudiments they just bore me but ive thought about reteaching my self left handed to get better strength with my left hand and left foot. is this a okay idea or will i end up confusing myself?
dude never in my years will think about using the doble mallet tech. in druming nice stuff.. really clean! hope to meet u in person and jam out one day bro..keep it up
@DTxOctavariumx thanks, but I'm using a grip similar to the Burton grip. Its more useful for drums since the sticks can be separated easily to hit different drums.
i want to start by saying.. that was fucking awesome. but i dont think its really latin. latin doesnt have double bass and your snares should be disabled.. but dont get me wrong.. awesome
@hobes9 Thanks man. I know that latin doesnt normally have double bass in it, but I didnt intend on making this solo 100 % latin anyway. Tried to throw my own style into it i guess.
@zlalaman2 No, I was thinking of learning it but there really is no point. You need lots of consistent practicing with traditional grip every day if you want to be really proficient with it. Matched grip is more versatile, and more comfortable to play.
@TheReighnart hey, thanks for the comment. Two stick drumming isnt common in latin drumming- its actually not common anywhere. Its just a technique i learned from my billy cobham video.
bad fucking ass but sloppy as hell. also it wasn't really latin. i mean sure there were some latin basics in there like the clave pattern but at heart you can tell he's a rock drummer. good solo.

How/What did you practice to get that fast with that much control? I think I read somewhere in one of your replies you practiced rudiments on pillows, but you have to have been practicing much more than that to be able to breeze around the drum kit with that much speed! Also, how long was it before you felt "comfortable" with your every move behind a drum kit?
I have Jared Falk's One Handed Drum Roll DVD but I find it highly unnecessary to use unless you're going for showmanship :)
well starting off slow is one thing...if you're talking accuracy get a small practice pad and work on technique there. In terms of being fast on the kit it builds up over time.
