Are you strumming the first two strings with your thumb and picking the higher notes with your midfinger? I looked how you play it with your left hand and I used my thumb to strum and midfinger to pick the notes as I go, sounds the same at least :)

or you can hit the top string open and the 3rd string open and drop the first one down until they sound the same
