  • Can you even strafe in these ports?

  • @OwlDaffUK You are correct about that the port of castlevania sotn on Sega Saturn is guilty of transparency issues. All transparency such as the waterfall in the underground caverns were removed. :( However the Saturn was still capable of producing better graphics than the psx if developers took more time with it. Unfortunately they all jumped on the Playstation Bandwagon.

  • @cadmire1982

Totally agree...the developers of the day did indeed concentrate more on the Playstation as it was easier to programme for and the most likely to give more cash return

It's a shame as the Saturn had a lot more potential than was actually realised.

  • I got both versions and the saturn is a little bit better.

  • Often developers would have to rebuild games they wanted to port over to the Saturn from the ground up such as Duke Nukem, Hexen, PowerSlave and Quake. This was a hassle and very time consuming but as you can tell usually resulted in a much more smoother and graphically Superior game.

  • Sega Saturn was always technically superior to the PSX. 2D games played faster and the frame rates for the animation were smoother. Loading times were faster as well. The only fault with the Saturn was that it was designed with to many processors which made designing games difficult.

  • @cadmire1982 Also the saturn sucks at somthing as simple as transparency.

  • @OwtDaftUK

What an ill informed specimen you are....the saturn could do transparencies but it was not readily available with the development tools that Sega supplied - it had to be added.

And since when do you know it was simple back in 1994 when the Saturn was created?

  • That "2.5D" engine isn't supported well by the PlayStation, wihch supports better real 3d models, is pretty the same problem that the PS1 version of Duke 3D has if I remember correct

  • @SonoGokuITA

Maybe, but the port of Doom on Playstation is by far the best of all console ports of the time, even improving some aspects from the original, like lighting.

Hexen is probably just a sloppy job.

  • @bizarroeddie1 The Atari Jaguar version came out long before the PSone version and was the best minus a few levels.

  • wow the N64 port runs alot better than these 2 ports

  • Comment removed

  • @killkenny5000 wrong video, my bad. I thougt I was still on the Doom video.

  • you miss the n64 and pc versions

  • SEGA SATURN WINS AGAIN BITCHES!

  • N64 all the way

  • pc<n64<saturn<playstation

  • @deluxedookie not

I have the pc version and it is much less than the n64 version

    in my opinion

    1#-n64

    2#-saturn

    3#-psx

    4#-pc

  • I just uploaded a comparison of the Saturn and N64 versions if anyone is interested.

  • I own the playstation 1 version, i enjoy it. I have played the pc version and i prefer it. However, looking at the saturn version against the playstation version the saturn one has to win.

The ps1 version only has the front sprites (look like they are always facing you and look 2d), the load times are one of the longest i have EVER seen and the save times take about 45 seconds. Found some frame rate slowdown too in some areas. Still fun but if you have a pc/saturn/ps1 or n64 get the pc or n64 1

  • I grew up with N64 version, it kicked ass

The soundtrack was also much better than this midi sounding stuff in my opinion

  • Saturn WINS

  • Definitely Saturn, the Psx version has some funky aspect problems.

  • From my point of view, the N64 version was vastly superior due to the bilinear filtering and Z-buffer. The frame rate was also quite satisfying, unfortunately it lags terribly if you use any of the widespread emulators.

  • man, a big difference in load times and the psx looks too wide

  • Great vid as always, these ports look quite similar.

  • Hexen is one of those games that id made to try and succeed the Doom series, but ultimately failed to reach anywhere near the same success as it's bigger brother. Hexen runs on an improved version of the then tried & true Doom engine, which by the time it was ported to consoles was starting to show it's age. Especially when you consider that Duke Nukem 3D & the original Quake would be released the following year.

I would describe Hexen as the love child of Doom & a game of Dungeons & Dragons.

  • @therealbluedragon I'm not sure what the hell happened to the PS1 port, it's just all kinds of wrong! For a start the colors are weird, also the textures & enemy sprites appear distorted when seen from up close. The HUD on the PS1 game seems to be stretched out when compared to the Saturn version; it's the same with the weapons too. The only real positive thing I can say about the PS1 port is that is has a comparable frame rate, which I guess is something.

  • @therealbluedragon Still, the framerate is better in the Sega Saturn version, which is also superior to the PlayStation version in most other aspects. I guess this makes up a little for the Doom mess up. By the way, I hope you are doing a Duke Nukem 3D comparison eventually. That's an interesting one.

  • @therealbluedragon the n64 port of hexen is probably the best one (which is opposit of usual.)

  • @therealbluedragon Well, if you knew you was going to experience these problems with the PS1 version, why not replace it with the Nintendo 64 version?

  • @therealbluedragon Hexen (and Heretic before it) was made by Raven Software, not id.

  • @therealbluedragon i get sick of playing htoe old games today.. cuase the grpahics...

BUT hexen 2 was the best true 3d game of its time.. and i dont know why they didnt go with that and that direciton .. i remember dreaming about hexen 2 ... i dont know why epople went with the uggly butt quake1.. quake 1 was somethin gi didnt like... maybe it was the death matches..i just dont like the midle age theme

  • @therealbluedragon I don`t care for age of your comment!

Heretic and HeXen series were made by Raven Software with id Software`s Doom engine.

Raven improved the engine, added new map format, map scripting to it. Jumping, poly objects, inventory system and lots of other cool stuff.

Did Raven failed? Hmm... NO! Heretic and HeXen have a fan base, but Doomers took all good from HeXen and threw it away!

Oh, and by the way... N64 port is the best one!

  • @deadfishy666 I liked your first two sentences but the second two were mad out of place. Did you click "Reply" on my comment by accident?

  • @deadfishy666 i like hexen, but the reason why it failed is that doom did better. want to know why? well maybe because it is BETTER. oh yeah by the way, hexen was made by id software. thought i'd let you know

  • @jackrabbitslim26 Man you don`t know much! Raven Software made HeXen as a expansion for Heretic, but it expanded so beyond that it became a game of it`s own!

Only thing id has with it is the Doom Engine!

  • @jackrabbitslim26 Doom didn`t had jumping! It didn`t had poly objects, ambient sounds, map scripting and sooo on!

I like Doom much, but Heretic and HeXen are much better!

  • @therealbluedragon ID did not make Hexen. It makes successful games that challenge technology of the day. Every time except in Doom 2. Hexen was epic fail Doom ripoff using Doom engine. If it sucks, it probably wasn't Id. Rule of thumb.

  • @Offspringfan64 ID sells Hexen...
