I have caught many hellbenders by hand in the East Tennessee rivers. They are notorious for grabbing your fish if you have them on the stringer in the water. Doe River in East Tennessee is literally FULL of hellbenders. We call them water dogs. I had never heard them called hellbenders until I searched for them online. Everyone I know calls them water dogs. They remind me of alligators when captured. In stress, they will spin and writhe like an alligator.
