I used to breed rats for pet stores, mostly too be used as snake food, and they are intresting creatures, you must move the new mothers and thier pinkies/babies to a seperate cage or the others will eat them, no matter how well fed they are and they will also eat alive any member of thier group thats sick or behaving oddly, however the males will hump each other and that seems to be accepted, again intresting creatures.

Im curious how do you discern the phycological and social characteristics of animals like this? How would you know this Rat is social? Is there body language, specific behaviors or actions that convey this? With Dogs and things its really obvious but what about with rats?

@1982mockingbird1982 You'd be surprised how intelligent and social rats are. You mentioned dogs, well rats are kind of like tiny dogs(in their behaviors and such). You would be able to tell a rat is social by the way they interact with people and other rats, same as any other animal. In fact, rats become rather depressed if they live alone and don't have a lot of time with their owner. They are also very clean animals, believe it or not. :)
