I am certain everyone would love to drop bombs, but war is not just about dropping bombs. Soldiers are called grunts for a reason. The soldier fights the land war and its won due to them, not those who drop the bombs. Every citizen should feel a sense of duty to serve in the military, but they don't. They just watch from the sidelines.

If you are stuck in an operating post for 8 months, all Taliban forces know exactly where you are, your home and base is a stationary target, the Taliban can pick any hill under cover of shrubbery and open fire on the base and you will have no idea where the fire is exactly coming from because the single guy on the hill will be a dot hundreds of meters away.

In the first Gulf war they made a grid up, assigned air wings to each grid and bombed anything that was a suspected target each and every single day and night for 175 days straight--why don't they try that here? It's just guys moving in and out along mountain trails--how hard can it be to nail'em when they're moving in?
@brummy3 I actually asked a buddy of mine who is in the US Military and he was saying that they don't that because in those mountains and such, there are too many villages and civilians. I asked why don't they just clear out of villagers and he said in those villages are people who live there, but are insurgent spies. First hint of the villagers complying with the Americans, they all die.
In Korean they did just that. We had no idea how effective that was because they were just guessing and flattened every hill that was suspect. It's exact same thing--guys hiding in tiny holes and you could walk right past'em and not know it. Look up and the whole hill would start moving with troops. So they'd just burn them all up with napalm and end of problem. Korea was shoot to kill anyone who tried crossing a bridge or wherever.
Certainly the terrain is rough--it's not much different than the fight for the North Korean mountains--very similar terrain only it's much larger area. In Korea we used napalm to great effect. They said at the start of the war here that the last thing they wanted to do was force protection--like they do now--just sitting in bases taking daily attack instead of them taking to the enemy.

@EdwardIVV This base right here is built on rock--they've built a lot of it up with sand bags. For example at the beginning you see arty out in the open, down low in a valley-I'd stick that sucker up on the top of the tallest hill and command the countryside. The Germans did that in Italy to great effect. They should be bombing each day every spot known for enemy troop movements--assign a grid to some air support and bomb each and every day on each hill, path and mountain.
@brummy3 I agree with what your saying but I'm just saying it is not that easy as you make it sound. Bombing random spots where you think enemy positions are is frowned upon since it could kill civilians therefore destroying inner relationships with locals. Also, those bombs cost a lot of money and supplies are limited so they cant waste them on the mountain side.
How about sending out a couple of snipers in guile suits to stay overnight, then maintain an over watch position during the day on those high peaks? And maybe someone to over look the village a couple times a week. Being careful in case they have night-vision too. And what about some sort of sound wave sensing radar to get position. you might even be able to do it with some sort of laptop setup?
That's not a proper decision. There are many afghan-watchers, they are among the civilians. I bet, afghan would be informed about the snipers positions soon.
It's difficult to keep a static position there.
That's not a secret that villagers inform taliban, they have the many reasons to spill an information.

I am certain everyone would love to drop bombs, but war is not just about dropping bombs. Soldiers are called grunts for a reason. The soldier fights the land war and its won due to them, not those who drop the bombs. Every citizen should feel a sense of duty to serve in the military, but they don't. They just watch from the sidelines.

If you are stuck in an operating post for 8 months, all Taliban forces know exactly where you are, your home and base is a stationary target, the Taliban can pick any hill under cover of shrubbery and open fire on the base and you will have no idea where the fire is exactly coming from because the single guy on the hill will be a dot hundreds of meters away.

Also the Taliban will sometimes put Women and children nearby so that the Americans cannot bomb them.

In the first Gulf war they made a grid up, assigned air wings to each grid and bombed anything that was a suspected target each and every single day and night for 175 days straight--why don't they try that here? I asked why don't they just clear out of villagers and he said in those villages are people who live there, but are insurgent spies. First hint of the villagers complying with the Americans, they all die.

In Korean they did just that. We had no idea how effective that was because they were just guessing and flattened every hill that was suspect. It's exact same thing--guys hiding in tiny holes and you could walk right past'em and not know it. Look up and the whole hill would start moving with troops. So they'd just burn them all up with napalm and end of problem. Korea was shoot to kill anyone who tried crossing a bridge or wherever.

Certainly the terrain is rough--it's not much different than the fight for the North Korean mountains--very similar terrain only it's much larger area. In Korea we used napalm to great effect. They said at the start of the war here that the last thing they wanted to do was force protection--like they do now--just sitting in bases taking daily attack instead of them taking to the enemy.

For example at the beginning you see arty out in the open, down low in a valley-I'd stick that sucker up on the top of the tallest hill and command the countryside. The Germans did that in Italy to great effect. They should be bombing each day every spot known for enemy troop movements--assign a grid to some air support and bomb each and every day on each hill, path and mountain.

Bombing random spots where you think enemy positions are is frowned upon since it could kill civilians therefore destroying inner relationships with locals. Also, those bombs cost a lot of money and supplies are limited so they cant waste them on the mountain side.

How about sending out a couple of snipers in guile suits to stay overnight, then maintain an over watch position during the day on those high peaks? And maybe someone to over look the village a couple times a week. Being careful in case they have night-vision too. And what about some sort of sound wave sensing radar to get position. you might even be able to do it with some sort of laptop setup?

That's not a proper decision. There are many afghan-watchers, they are among the civilians. I bet, afghan would be informed about the snipers positions soon.
It's difficult to keep a static position there.
That's not a secret that villagers inform taliban, they have the many reasons to spill an information.

He wants only the best yes only the best for us and that means for you to. Mankind starts wars, God passes Judgement. There is a difference. God is Light, Man is fallen. God is Good, Man is wicked.
