@nickatina40 You should probably not get one as they really should be in the wild. But, if you are really interested, you could contact a local bird keeper or zoo and such and ask them about getting involved with bird rehabilitation.

One cold rainy night I heard this raspy screeching sound outside the cabin I was staying in. The sound seemed to be coming from the crown of a tree next to the window and I assertained that it was an owl of some kind.

I sounded just like this barn owl and kept calling for some time, probably irritated and hungry for not being able to hunt in the rain.

Barn owls live all over the world. They don't exist natively in only Australia and Antarctica, but are very common on every other continent.

Most owls don't actually hoot as most people think. Some of the more popular owls make a hooting noise but most owls produce various sounds from owl to owl. Barn owls are often said to be the reason for owls affiliation with Halloween because when they screech it sounds like a human scream. Which is kind of odd because screech owls make more of a yodeling noise.

Do you raise the mice, or buy them? In the US, rahabbers seem most often to buy white mice, which can be a problem for juveniles that are to be released and which might expect wild mice to be white. Here, you have a non-releasable, and you're feeding it a dark mouse.
