The Dust Bowl happened at the same time of the Great Depression (A serious drop in the economy of the United States) It was kinda an insult to injury thing. There was a very bad drought throughout the south/southwestern portion of the US. Nothing grew, so there was nothing, obviously, to keep the dust and dirt from blowing everywhere. That area is very windy, so it was basically ten years of continuing dust storms. So along with being dirt poor, they also no way of growing food.
