  • I don't know much about technology, but in your opinion what was better, blu ray of hddvd

  • @DwRockett Blu-ray, hands down. The discs are much higher capacity, so the movies can have higher bitrates and be better quality, and the interactive features are far more robust on Blu-ray (HD-DVD was basically a glorified web browser, Blu-ray uses BD-Java which is a full blown programming language so developers can do literally ANYTHING with the interactivity).

  • @Zaranyzerak

Further to my other comment. It's akin to saying "3 years ago the farmer was selling me a chicken for £100, and 2 years ago for £75... and this year he's selling me them for £50, so how can it be a rip-off?" Well, when you realise the farmer across the road is selling his chickens for £30... that's how. I just bought Battlestar Galactica on Blu for £50. That's a miniseries, fours seasons and a TV movie. It is £45 for one season of TOS. Surely you appreciate this? Nice videos, BTW.

  • You videos are the best!!! I love the fact that you go into depth on the history of the releases be it a movie or series. I am a film buff and enjoy the history, plus it brings back memories. Too bad there are so many 'TOOLS' out there who prefer the more common YouTube Blu Ray reviews where 99% of the clip will be spent talking about the packaging and not even the film. Great work as always!!!

  • 60$ that a dam good deal. We had to pay twice that to get all the complete real ghostbusters series. Which I have yet to watch all of. On the day when I'm not going to be watching new videos . I think i'll get some thing watch. I think dream girl is still maybe in the plastic.

  • Someone let me borrow that first collection of Season one. I thought it sucked badly. I was wondering if you have or have read anything about the new remastered Series on DVD. I just ordered the whole series (apparently remastered) for $48 plus shipping

  • There are versions on DVD out there that cost nothing more than 25 euros/dollars. I got a version that originally costed about 90 euros I believe. Bought it second handed for 20 euros each, the guy later realised he made a big mistake! This is also because the set is in prime condition, it looks great! And it's high def with a lot of extras!

  • @RemnantsOfBeauty Because that's not the focus of this part. This is the section that focuses on the various DVD releases. I give context and history in my reviews. Anyone can do a 5 minute review of something that is essentially substanceless. That's not what I'm about. I give my viewers more. Kindly do not criticize my style until you understand it. Don't like it? Fine. Don't watch. Others enjoy the fact that I go more in depth than most other reviewers.

  • @Zaranyzerak Fair comment, i meant no disrespect to you as i have enjoyed watching all parts so far and have subscribed to you. Perhaps for future reviews, label the parts in the title as "History" and so people like me who just want your verdict on the set can go straight to part 3 or "Actual Review".

  • @RemnantsOfBeauty There wasn't enough room in the title line. I actually do describe the focus of each part in the video descriptions. Besides, I'd rather people watch the whole thing anyway and get the full context of whatever my various comments/criticisms are throughout the review. It's not just about the final part, it's about the journey getting there.

  • @RemnantsOfBeauty But having said all that, one thing you can generally rely on (unless otherwise noted), is that the final part of my multi-part reviews will be the one that delivers the final verdict. But you will most definitely get more out of WHY I thought this or that by watching all the parts.

  • @Zaranyzerak For line space i would recommend shorting The Original Series to "TOS" you'll save 15 characters which is ample enough to add a "History" or "Review" part. Granted this may not be the case for other reviews but it's an idea. You won't loose views because the titles doesn't say the name fully because you can add it to the tags. =)

  • @Zaranyzerak

don't let these cyber bullies push you around dude your videos are fine they way you do them. I love the video were you complain about your work shift at the movie theather at night. How your friend doing the one that almost had his apendix ruptutre. Do you still keep in touch with him. You remind me alot of the video game nerd. I don't mean to offend that supposed to be a compliment.

  • On the Firefly 'Done the Impossible' DVD you hear fans say they never really cared much for the show when they first watched it on TV. Why? Because it made little sense. They knew it had something good there...enough to chance buying the DVD set when it came out, but they were still warm on it at this point. AFTER seeing it as intended, they fell in love with it. Viewing order can make or break a thing...so on this, I fully agree. It was stupid to mess up the order.

  • All that just to get your point across, then hahha , you paid less for it (good for you), then tell us that its higher cost to buy it. Wow!

  • @SnT83299 All what? I go in depth in reviews like this, it's not JUST about the new title. And yes, I got a deal on it. I was lucky. So? Shop around, you can probably find it for the same I paid for it, probably less. I merely pointed out how much it usually goes for where I am, which is often much higher than other places. Amazon, for example, typically has it for around what I paid for it most of the time. So there's no reason you can't get the same deal.

  • @Zaranyzerak

Why did they release ninja turtles original season 4 -8 1 on and then season 2 on more then one volume then when they did season 3 leave of the 2 part episode where they introduce the turloid hermit then a single part episode that happened after word. Then allow stupid nickelodone to not release season 9 and 10. Why did they only put leather head in 3 episode one of which up to recently.

  • @Zaranyzerak

were he teamed up with leather head slash and rat king that I never new existed until recenlty because I wkiipedia the characters all within the 4th season. Why did they kill him of in other series besides the stupid soccer mons having to much power. I depise people like that. They butchered the little shop remake ending that was bad enough leave the other stuff alone for petes shake from the 1980s.

  • star trek tv series october 12th 2010

is the voice track any better on blu ray from the standard enhanced version

i thought it was terrible how about anyone else

  • @joeystrab I assume you're talking about the remixed version? Sounded fine to me. Though one thing this version has that previous DVDs didn't is the original mono audio track as an option.

  • I believe Lost is quite expensive on Blu-ray isn't it?

  • Whoah. Those are some whacky looking DVD box sets.

  • In my opinion what various movies and series cost in the past is not so important, such things where very expensive. What matters however is how much the sets cost to day. Now in Norway the remastered DVD sets is about 80 bucks, with the blu-ray versions being about 100. I got the DVD sets as gifts from my hubby and I do not think that I will be upgrading to blu-ray anytime soon. But the difference in price is not much. If I where to buy them, I would go for blu-ray.

  • @Venefica82

I have the DVD season sets, but I am only upgrading the season 1 set to Blu. It is my favourite by a mile. DVD quality is still OK for me and I flit between BD and DVD all the time with no worries...so for season 2 and 3, DVD is fine. Perhaps when they go down some more, I'll get season 2 BD...but not season 3. I have zero desire to see Spock's brain in glorious all singing all dancing HD, thank you very kindly. :)

  • My last comment disappeared. So I'm posting it again to make sure you received it. I agree with you. The episodes should be in production order just like the VHS version. Even the TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT boxsets are in airdate order. And it's not just Star Trek. MOST of the TV season sets that have been released are also in airdate order. It's just weird! I don't understand why the production companies are sticking with the airdate order. All TV DVDs should be using the production order!

  • @hagrid0731 Well, production order isn't ALWAYS the best way to present a series, but in the case of Star Trek definitely. Story continuity order is the usual preferred way for a series, which production and airdate order don't always follow.

  • Right now Im watching Balance of Terror the re-mix Dolby 5.1 with stereo surrounds has nice low end down to 10Hz. This re-mix is a huge leap a huge leap over the monaural original TV show airing, over a 3 speaker with limited frequency response, not that the show is limited in frequency response.

The show sounds great enough on my JBL sound system with smooth panning effects from LCRS.

  • The only difference the bluray will be is 24fps rate over the PAL speed-up.

Has the image been poorly colour manipulated because I will not tolerate (colour manipulation) that leads to poor colour artefacts that will not mirror the colour of the original 35mm print.

The version I have looks okay I havent noticed green smearing as of yet

  • @EmpireLS56KW It's 24fps and full 1080p - the whole thing was transferred directly from the 35mm master prints. Colors are bright and vibrant, contrast is solid. There may have been a bit of tweaking, but nothing negative that I can see. Film grain is intact, I didn't notice any edge enhancement, and overall the image seems to be very true to the film source. It's a noticeable step up in quality from the DVD versions.

  • Look I can tell your Trekker like myself but that doesnt mean Im a fucking fan of ShitRay!

If the studios had a fucking motherfucking manual a holy fucking bluray bible that says if we fuck up on the colour balance and brightness, we should all burn in hell for our fuck up!

Well the features films like nothing like what a 35mm or 70mm print looks LOL OPEN YOURE EYES EVERYONE!

  • @EmpireLS56KW This is the series, not the movies. The movies got CRAP treatment on blu-ray. Until they get a proper re-transfer, I'm not wasting my money on those. The original SERIES, however, looks great. And most importantly, it includes the original mono audio as an option (which apparently hasn't been available since the days of VHS!), in addition to a new 7.1 mix. The transfers are gorgeous, and I especially like that you can switch between the original and redone effects on the fly.

  • Im guessing these versions are the same six-track Dolby re-mix as the region 2 DVD. The region 2 DVD holds three episodes per DVD.

The STAR TREK DVD was part of fortnightly release with a colourful magazine if I can recall the price was £7.99 which is light-years cheaper than what you forked out for!

There is also a few bonus extras on the last edition from Star Trek Deep Space 9 and Next-Generation.

  • @EmpireLS56KW Actually, if it was 3 episodes per DVD, then that would mean the whole season would be £79.90 for the DVDs, which translates roughly to about $150.00. The Blu-ray was way cheaper than that, even at regular price. That was kinda my point in showing previous releases in the review... The Blu-ray set has the most features and viewing options, is the best picture and sound quality bar none, and is also the lowest cost release in the history of the series.

  • @Zaranyzerak If I brought the DVD set as a whole it would cost £207.74p.

The version I have or produced are uncut to the version the rotten scummy BBC showed over the years that was trimmed down.

  • I saw all three seasons at Best Buy for $40 apiece...on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately they were sold out of Season 1.

  • I got my season 1 set for $65, Season 2 was $60, and my season 3 was $55. I like that it has both versions, so really you are spending $30 for a set that cost $130, then another $30 for a set that cost $85.

  • I think the dvds of Star Trek tos are more expensive than the Blu-ray versions are now

  • I heard when season one on the X-files was first released on DVD it was $300 Xpensive

  • Actually, they went for around $160 per season, same as the original Star Trek season sets (all the various ST shows). Crazy, considering you can now get the entire series of X-Files, with all the extras, for 200-300.

  • i saw season one of the x-files for sale for $10 in a used music store in 2009 and i thought it was a bargain at $50 back in 2004, cuz all the rest were$110

  • Excellent review! Thanks!

There's a lot of confusion with all the various sets. The blu-ray set out now is getting bad reviews on how the 3 season sets are packaged. I notice that some sets are listed as widescreen, that's impossible since it was shot in 35mm, must be a mistake, unless they mean the menus are widescreen. Amazon has a pop-up about some issues.

Walmart is ripping off right now with Season 1 at $117.98US, watch for their rollbacks and price changes.

  • The first time I say Deforst Kelly he was in a western of with Gary Cooper...I have a Scottie action figure but i cant find him LOL!

  • you do got a point.. I like ST Original but I LOVE Next Generation the best to be honest.. Picard is more about Diplomacy and talks where Shatner is more about no talk and more action.. But I prefer picard...

  • I enjoy your history lessons on how much things did cost back then

  • I purchased star trek season 1 on standard dvd with restored and remastered effects n every episode luks amazin, i got the set cheap off ebay for £25 (approx $42)

  • should I get the DVD sets now, or wait until my parents buy a blu-ray player, and then get the blu-ray version? The thing is that my parents aren't going to get blu-ray player untill DVDs go out of production...fyi-we didn't get a dvd player until 2005.

  • Wow. That seems a bit...extreme. Well, DVDs aren't going to disappear completely for quite some time yet, so you might be best off just to get the DVDs for now. Sounds like it would be a long wait before you would be able to watch the Blu-rays.

  • The First DVD i got was STAR TREK TOS season 1 and i was pissed because i didnt like star trek at the time

  • Even though the blu-ray set has both versions (Which automatically makes it the best set), The physical set itself isn't the most asthetically pleasing thing in the world. The other 2 sets (Original only, and then Re-Mastered only) were much more stylish. This one is a little boring looking.

  • Well yes, I have to concede that point - the packaging was much more stylish on both of the previous releases. But given the sheer AWESOMENESS of the contents of this version, I think it's a small concession. :)

  • They should CGI insert additional picture to the episodes on the sides and make Star Trek in 1.85:1 widescreen, or hell 2.35:1 widescreen. That would look amazing without any cropping. Or would you say that's tampering too much?

  • That's tampering WAY too much. It was shot and framed for 4x3, so any alteration to that would mean cropping off huge chunks of the image. Believe me, the way they did it is the best possible way they could both update and be faithful to the original source material.

  • Oh wait, I see what you mean. Ye gods, that would be an insane amount of work! I imagine it would be very tricky to seamlessly match the new "sides" to the original image.

  • I enjoy your history lessons. They beat the history classes I had in school.

  • Now CBS PARAMOUNT!!!

  • 160 dollars for the DVD season sets? Are you kidding me? Holy crap, I'm glad I was five years late to switching to DVD.

  • zaran do you like stargate sg1 ? i'm thinking about buying the big entire series box set

  • Although I have been very tempted to, I still haven't bought the remastered seasons two and three. I don't have anything Blu Ray yet, but I can't seem to bring myself to by the straight DVDs when I know the Blu Ray is out there, and surely one of these days, I'll switch to it.

  • Hehehe...I know the feeling! I held off getting DVD for quite a while before finally taking the plunge in 2001. But prior to actually getting a player, I bought a bunch of DVDs that I wanted, just to make sure they didn't suddenly go out of print, or to get them on sale, etc. because I knew I'd get one eventually. Mind you, I don't see THIS set going out of print any time soon...hehehe. It is, without question, the best set I've ever seen of TOS, especially having BOTH versions.

  • wouldn't "star date" order be the most chronological? or did they make mistakes in the dating for it and thus chose production order?

The sets came in pretty nice boxes too, though I seem to recall they were pretty expensive too.

I have to say, Being able to switch between old an new effects would be pretty cool. ^_^

I think the problem is, it seems they have always been ripping us off. most shows go for around $60 at full price. At least in my experience.

  • Thank you! and what do you think about the star trek cartoons?

  • Believe it or not, I've never actually seen them! I'll be picking up the DVD set at some point in the near future, so I look forward to that. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

  • Thank you again for all your work in all your videos, i now it's not an easy thing to do, i really enjoy them.

My best wishshes for you and your family .

    Kaisalsabag

  • There is a user named DOCTOROFMINDMD on here , . You ought to check him out sometime if you get the chance . its worth it,haaaaaaaaaaah. -take it easy.

  • I think the main reason people are complaining so much about the price has to do with the double dipping aspect. When you've already suck hundreds of dollars into the earlier sets (possibly multiple times) it kind of pisses people off that they now have to fork over $60+ per set for the latest re-release on a new format, even though it's obvious to anyone familiar with Trek on DVD that it's the cheapest it's ever been. They don't think it's fair that they have to spend so much again.

  • Another issue back in the DVD era was when compared to similar series Star Trek was so much more expensive. To be honest, compared to series like Quincy, Hawaii 5-O, and Mission Impossible because it did tend to go for the new formats early Star Trek does seem expensive and Blu-Ray is a LONG way from replacing DVD as format of choice.

  • Hm, Flipper-discs... do they swim and make high-pitched noises?... :D :P

    But $60,-...

People, that's like $2,50 per episode, not counting any extra material or features.

It might seem a little expensive, but it's quite an extended set, with the amount of episodes already.

  • a very good video, i was waiting for this part for quite a long time

  • Wait until he does the next generation..lol

  • lool

  • Greate!

  • Paramount will thank you for this. Great videos!

  • u never mentioned the remastered dvd sets lol

  • Uh...yes I did.

  • the new remastered versions that have been released on blu ray , the exact same ones have been released on dvd with new packaging, and where in this video did you mention them cos i re-watched this n i didnt see you talking about them

  • How are you missing that? I talk about the remastered sets all throughout the last part of the video. I even show all the covers and contents of all three sets, and talk about the fact that the first set is an HD-DVD/DVD Combo set.

Yes, they are the same remastered versions that were on the previous DVD set, AND the original, unaltered versions are there too.

  • The Remastered episodes are actually released here in europe on dvd, with the same cover as the blueray and they were actually cheap! They are in a digipack and with a tin-cover slipcase!

  • Did you see the new Star Trek movie? Did you like it?

  • In-depth review coming right after this Blu-ray review is done...

  • HEY ZARANYZERAK, lets hope Blu-Ray does the same thing for Star Wars (the branching effects and all). Are you interested in getting all Harry Potter movies on Blu-Ray soon OR wait for THE Ultimate Box Set of every Harry Potter movie? 65 Dollars is a great price for High-Definition Star Trek.

  • Ooo yeah, good idea about doing the same thing for 'Star Wars'.

They should use that branching for many more things.

About every film should also come out with different cuts, a shame that some that have significant different cuts didn't come out on BD like that already...

Myself I also would like the full 'Harry Potter'-set. :D

I only saw like two movies though, still need to watch all my DVDs...

And I think those early "collections" are quite silly, like only the first 5 films or something...

  • Great stuff buddy so want this! Hopefully you'll let us know that it's back to production order again.

  • finally!!
