Well i'm sorry to say this, but you then must have a woeful taste in films. Undoubtedly you're the sort of Michael Bay disciple that is desperately awaiting to see the latest Transformers installment. You'll be someone that prefers action and a firework display of a toy advert, over something note worthy, something entertaining but with integrity. Dragonball was utter rubbish, on an epically Biblical scale, and they will mess Akira up as well...that much can be granted.
well i do want to see the new Transformers, but Michael Bay is definitely not one of my favorite directors. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, now those guys can make cinema lol (they made Crank btw).
Transformers was a good adaptation, in fact, I liked it, but there are certain technological issues that "riddle" me up and seem impossible in the physical world of now.
No offense Nocturnal, and I do not wish to condescend although feel I'm probably going to, "Crank" doesn't fall anywhere near the phrase "cinema". Films like Transformers, Crank etc are just mind numbing action fests which while in their own right entertaining should not be considered anything more than that, they're not good films. I'd say someone like Guillermo Del Toro makes good cinema simply using an individual example. While fun and fancy they may be "cinema" they are not...
...Hollywood will do to Akira what they've done to all re-made franchises, including Transformers, and that's lose its heart and turn it into a slug-a-thon. They'll insert words like "prophecy" into the mix because the suits don't understand Eastern mythology (as with Dragonball) and they'll completely misinterpret the point of Akira. And undoubtedly have a forty minute bike chase scene...it's going to suck.
DiCaprio said himself that he was not going to play as Kaneda, but i did read that Appian way(DiCaprios company) and WarnerBros are going to direct this movie. DiCaprio said that he was going to stick the story. Anyways, im a looking forward to this film and hope it turns out as good as i think it will.
yeah i was reading that it was supposed to come out this year but is now pushed back to 2011. The New York City thing is apparently true. Tetsuo and Kaneda are supposedly being played DiCaprio(Kaneda) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt(Tetsuo). It might be a two part movie i hear also, each one being over two hours. I think they wanna cover more of the book. Im hype for it, just think what two years work on this(with a good Japanese director) will do for the quality of the movie.

Yea, the guy who created this video has mashed together a bunch of fan-created items as well. Two of the shots of 'Kaneda's bike' were fan-made from Suzuki scooters. However I do agree with a few others, if DiCaprio is going to star in it, they may as well change the name from Akira to 'Something other than Akira'. Sorry, I just don't seem him pulling off the whole "Japanese Rebellious High-School Student".
Honestly, with all the other live actions that have failed I hope they never get see these through. From what it sounds like, the anime to live action budgets are usually too small to make anything good. That, and the people making the movies fail at mastering the changes they make. Either changes don't flow or they just suck. I'm really worried. I hear they have Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell live actions coming soon as well. I hope they realize they have a lot of work ahead of them.

I don't think the makers have to be asian. If we could trust that someone who is not japanese to keep it the way it is and not dumb it down as well as have the maker of Akira and such on the team, then there would be hope. Unfortunately, that's not how it is. Honestly, I have seen a few live action films made by asian directors and they sucked, but so far, the western adaptations have been the worst. :/

The fact that its said to be set in the states really annoys me, don't mind American actors because Japanese cant act (well few can) they also don't know how to make good movies...have the best ideas but something goes wrong in the execution stage?? Oh god. I hate the sheer idea of a live-action movie, especially from Hollywood. Seriously, New Manhattan. WTF? This is going the way of that "Dragonball" shit they claim is a movie. I think they should at *least* base it in Neo Tokyo if they're thinking of making an epic fail of a movie. They should use the original soundtrack from the anime, and also Japanese actors and even some dialogue!

Well i'm sorry to say this, but you then must have a woeful taste in films. Undoubtedly you're the sort of Michael Bay disciple that is desperately awaiting to see the latest Transformers installment. You'll be someone that prefers action and a firework display of a toy advert, over something note worthy, something entertaining but with integrity. Dragonball was utter rubbish, on an epically Biblical scale, and they will mess Akira up as well...that much can be granted.

No offense Nocturnal, and I do not wish to condescend although feel I'm probably going to, "Crank" doesn't fall anywhere near the phrase "cinema". Films like Transformers, Crank etc are just mind numbing action fests which while in their own right entertaining should not be considered anything more than that, they're not good films. I'd say someone like Guillermo Del Toro makes good cinema simply using an individual example. While fun and fancy they may be "cinema" they are not...

...Hollywood will do to Akira what they've done to all re-made franchises, including Transformers, and that's lose its heart and turn it into a slug-a-thon. They'll insert words like "prophecy" into the mix because the suits don't understand Eastern mythology (as with Dragonball) and they'll completely misinterpret the point of Akira. And undoubtedly have a forty minute bike chase scene...it's going to suck.

DiCaprio said that he was going to stick the story. Anyways, im a looking forward to this film and hope it turns out as good as i think it will.

yeah i was reading that it was supposed to come out this year but is now pushed back to 2011. The New York City thing is apparently true. Tetsuo and Kaneda are supposedly being played DiCaprio(Kaneda) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt(Tetsuo). It might be a two part movie i hear also, each one being over two hours. I think they wanna cover more of the book. Im hype for it, just think what two years work on this(with a good Japanese director) will do for the quality of the movie.

Yea, the guy who created this video has mashed together a bunch of fan-created items as well. Two of the shots of 'Kaneda's bike' were fan-made from Suzuki scooters. However I do agree with a few others, if DiCaprio is going to star in it, they may as well change the name from Akira to 'Something other than Akira'. Honestly, with all the other live actions that have failed I hope they never get see these through. From what it sounds like, the anime to live action budgets are usually too small to make anything good. That, and the people making the movies fail at mastering the changes they make. Either changes don't flow or they just suck. I'm really worried. I hear they have Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell live actions coming soon as well. I hope they realize they have a lot of work ahead of them.

I don't think the makers have to be asian. If we could trust that someone who is not japanese to keep it the way it is and not dumb it down as well as have the maker of Akira and such on the team, then there would be hope. Unfortunately, that's not how it is. Honestly, I have seen a few live action films made by asian directors and they sucked, but so far, the western adaptations have been the worst. :/

They're splitting it into halves because Leo wants it to follow the manga more than the anime.. That's the only idea I really like about the project. The manga is just too big to fit into one movie. I just hope they film it all at the same time so we don't have to wait 2 years between parts. If they can pull of Kaneda's bike and Tetsuo's transformation, I'll be impressed. If not, then I'll be really pissed. A good anime/manga based movie could open up to new things. Ghost in the Shell anyone?

I hear the location is gonna be based in america not japan, and that their gonna change the story a bit as well, and they will most likely not use jap actors.
