leon... i know this is going to step up your income but please don't stop making a quick performance in Tulsa.... Until I die at least... going on 57/ born 1953 discovered you in college even though I went to Will Rogers High... Your High School too! Tulsa, is so proud of you! I don't know if you here it enough but you are loved and thought to be the greatest there has ever been among Tulsan's. There's only one LEON RUSSELL IN THE WORLD AND FOREVER WILL BE THE ONE AND ONLY!
Today I put my collection of Elton into my iTunes. It's all his Greatest Hits. IMO. It was moving for many reasons. Elton is one of my favorite artists ever. His music strikes a nerve in my spine every time I listen to him. It's my childhood memories, it's teen memories, it's young adulthood memories, it's my son's childhood, it's a soul connection. God Bless Elton. I can't wait to get this album. I am so happy to hear the timeless sound and wish I could tell him how inspirational he is.
The Union is a revelation, a brilliant soulful disc, special, terrific, a triumph, rejuvenating, truly great, best album of 2010, best by either Elton or Leon for many years, a perfect union, extraordinary, mighty, charming, back to glory, a happy reunion indeed- that's what the critics say and i agree with them.
@Pianobrad I would say best since Capt Fantastic, one of my 4 favourites by him, anyway a return to his roots, real music and great form. Leon Russell must take a lot of credit. Now i just have to learn to somehow like this particular song more!
@mizofan Yeah I saw that too. But this is the same publication that gave GBYBr 3 stars I believe. And if you go back far enough it's the same publication that gave EJ, Tumbleweed Connection, MMATW, DSMIOTPP and Honky Chateau 3 or less stars.
So I don't hold RS as a great indicator of music critique. Maybe they feel like EJ they want sales so Leon Russell can have some pocket change for the rest of his life.
@alreltney Well your observation on Rolling Stone works both ways- as they've undervalued some of Elton's 70s albums it could be said he's unlikely to get 5 stars now, unless the album is very good . Of course they could be wanting to make up for past errors like the Oscars often do, but i've read 11 professional reviews now and all are positive, a few gushing. This clip worried me and though better on the album it's still the worst song imo, i'd have preferred one more by Leon instead..
I'll give it a chance and sample the CD before I completely dismiss it though. From what I;ve heard so far as this clip indicated, it better have something a lot better to offer than this.
This is comfortably the weakest of the songs i've heard from The Union album, but it should be better on the album than live on youtube. Anyway The Union's getting very positive reviews so far. Elton has done quite a lot of fine songs and a handful of good albums since the 70s but from 70-6 the amount of great songs he did was incredible. Still, Alreltney is far too dismissive of Elton's post 76 work, i think, and there's no need to be so rude about it
What's all this talk about losing it, hanging it up and all that? This is a decent number with great sentiment. I'm getting on in years myself so hearing the gist of this song warms my heart and makes my old pipes creak with joy (if that is possible) ...
This songs has more 'Leon Russell' substance than Elton. This isn't a good example of how Elton writes songs, so I think it'd be fair to say, hey, Elton you're the 5th biggest-selling artist of all time, you've been going over 40 years, had a top 40 hit every year for the last 38 years - you must be doing something right. As for Leon, you've written some good songs but this isn't one of the best. I think it may be you who has to hang up your coat.
Reggie has always been weird but his weirdness has gotten really annoying in his later years. As I say he croaked after Blue Moves and remains missing in action. His arrogance is a bit overwhelming as well in my opinion. He is getting pretty aloof if he thinks efforts like are posted here are worth listening to. It sucks out loud and he cannot seem to get it together enough to put out something worth listening to so I question his remaining talent and effort.
For those of you touting Rolling Stone's judgement of ( undoubtedly another mundane letdown) be sure to look in their archives and see how they panned GYBR, MMATW and other classics. In otherwords Rolling Stone is practically worthless and shine in their field about as good as our Hero has become in his since the 80's. Don't hold your breath for anything like we all have been waiting on now for decades. It ain't coming.......ever!
Whoa boy another YAWN from our fucking hero of the 70's.Man is it just me or do you think with his talent he could at least crank out one more good song? This sucks. Elton perished when he left the studio the last recording of Blue Moves.
Sure he did a couple Disney greats but he is a supposed rock and roller and rock star. He has been nothing close since the passing of the 70's. Save for his live concerts and a huge collection of tunes he would be gone by now. This sounds like more pathetic
continuations from his numerous last albums. I have to agree it's time for him to hang it up. As far as Taupin goes, Taupin is the second luckiest person on Earth (Ringo Starr is first) his lyrics suck, he's made a fortune off Elton he should hang it up too. As far as you who think this is great and can't wait for the album you must have a fixation on Elton and think he shits roses. He's through as far as new stuff goes. Put on Tumbleweed Connection and enjoy the past, he sucks.
@candelise if you want some real boredom just keep watching and listening to this video of EJ. Talk about mundane and boring! An over the hill wind bag making songs that sound like an over the hill wind bag in his 80's. How dare you say that I am boring whilst you sit here and listen to this boring effort by our long gone Hero.
I'd rather watch mud dry to dirt.
Wake up face the facts and try to rid yourself of that EJ complex and fixation you have so bad dumbass.
@alreltney I'd rather listen to this track than hear futile insults. By the way, if Taupins' lyrics suck so bad, what are you doing listening to 'Tumbleweed Connection?
@candelise well moron isn't that quite simple? Our HERO was a God then and the Melodies were awesome and beyond compare. Any more stupid questions?
Taupin as I say is the second luckiest person in the world next to ringo starr. Reggie could have put melodies to ingredient decks on retail TV dinners and it would have sold. There are a few instances of genius with Taupin but few and far in between. No where near the amount he thinks as you can tell in interviews as his arrogance spews abundantly.
@alreltney Poor you! All this time you have only been able to appreciate 50% of the material they wrote. Elton once said that if it was not for Bernie, there would BE no songs. You can overdo the impact of the melodies all you want, but they never came first. Those particular lyrics of such versatile subject matter inspired the tunes you claim to love so much. Then again, if ingredient decks on retail TV dinners is your meter, I guess you never noticed.
@candelise stop kidding yourself. This is the last post from me. Elton has lost it, lost it 30 years ago plain and simple. His arrogance is the only thing that is becoming intense. He has no clue and save for the period from 69-78 he would have nothing to offer in a live show Taupin would rather see the ass of a horse than write a lyric and Elton would , well Elton will do anything to make a buck now a days enough said there. Anything to keep himself in the spotlight hewill do an that's pathetic
@alreltney If you enjoy the music should be your main concern, bar the artist stirring up hatred, commiting rape etc. You could yak all day about that the artists' intentions. A bit old, that one! Elton has probably been what you say since the mid-Seventies, for all you know and still writing those melodies you love. If twelve notes are arranged in a way that's pleasing to you, with a lyric you like, what's the problem? Get real.
@alreltney Wow, how insightful. You excoriate Elton John and Rolling Stone and pronounce on how bad/boring/old his music is. Brilliant. I wish you were on TV. It would be a pleasure to turn you off.
Or even bigger pleasure to suck Elton's small member. Look you have an EJ fixation and I can't help that but what is for certain is that our former Hero is washed up, past due, over the hill and done and that's it my friend. He should really hang it up.
@alreltney I am very happy that people like you do not decide what is good and poor music. Elton has made more good music the last decades than any other artist. I think most music today is garbage, and Elton is one of few still making good music. And he still sells several millions of each album, and is loved by tens of millions. So ask youself, why do you care? When I Look at the list of comments at your profile, I see you are struggeling with something.
@2BeHonestNow and I will do that one day when I am bored like reading your comments. so take some 22 songs in a show and 11 are pre 1980 and his career spans 4 decades Elton seems to be struggling with something, like his creativity.
He'd be better off going back to the powder. So would you.
@007koko007 you wish I were. The only struggling here is that you are struggling to be like EJ and EJ is struggling to be a fraction of the creative mind he was in the 70's. He has gotten way too eccentric, arrogant, too many causes, too much time responding to distractions, too much traveling putting on shows. He is done, he's gone, there is nothing he can create that will quench the thirst for classic type new songs. EJ died in 1978. just the way it is Jimmy Off.
@alreltney, that is only your personal opinion and it is valid like any other opinion. I became Elton's fan because of his 1989-1997 music. I became a BIG FAN because of songs like "You Gotta Love Someone", "The One", "Believe", "Live Like Horses" etc. and in that period Elton was strong like he was back in 70'es. Actualy, your opinion is not even your opinion. It is basicaly the same what every stupid critic is selling to masses. "YNTOld" isn't good example how Elton great is even today.
@007koko007 if you didn't become a fan until 89 I feel sorry for you, nothing and I mean nothing in rock/pop could match what Elton did for it from 70-78. IF are comparing 89-97 to the 70's YOU are the moron. Nothing close. Apples and oranges. Homo's and Heteros. EJ should now stick to scoring for Films and touring and playing nothing but 70's or alternate his tours so we know what we are getting before we pay for a ticket. Nothing and I mean nothing he made post Blue Moves is worthy in concert
@alreltney, if anyone is moron without his own taste, that is you then. Just live in your little world and continue to believe that your prejudice is objectivity. Only complete idiot can disregard somebody's 30 years of making music only because that music is from wrong decade. So sad!
@007koko007 Oh buzz off Bozo, had enough of you. Just buzz the fuck off. If you want to believe EJ is still a force and is still putting out good music then good for you. I quit supporting him years ago both by listening and going to shows. His voice is shot and I;ve seen interviews where he thinks he is now a singer more than a piano player, and I thought he stopped the drugs. He is done, his contemporary compositions suck. That is all jack. Now buzz off bozo
@alreltney you're a fucking asshole. I've been following this conversation for a while now... what a total bastard you are. I mean, who cares if you don't like the album or you do, right? But it's the ignorant way you speak to people that is really shocking. Wow.
as a long ej fan, there comes a time when you should look back on your career and say hey, it was fantastic, and now maybe its time to hang it up, well elton, I think that time has come!
Yawn!....In case you were wondering Sir Elton, It's alright for an artist your age to record some new rock and roll record, and yes, many have done it. What the hell has happened to you? This is a piece of generic garbage....Shame on you!
Being a lifelong devout Elton John fan, I too have been disappointed with his latest realeases. I think "Songs From The West Coast" was his last, best Elton record. Since then, most of his songs sound like Broadway rejects. But then, hey, after all this man has done, let him be happy doing what HE wants to do. I do hope his new CD will be geared more towards his fans though, because we truely do miss Elton of old.
Rolling Stone have called the album "brilliant soulful", fingers crossed cos this song doesn't do much for me yet, maybe it'll grow. Songs from the West Coast and Captain and the Kid were excellent and there's a good vibe about the new project and people involved.
I completely agree with this post. The song doesn't do much for me either, but I hold out hope since both Songs from the West Coast as well as Captain and the Kids are both favorites of mine. I'll hold out my final judgement for The Union in October.
However, since Rolling Stone gave it a positive write-up recently, maybe that's a good sign of what's to come.
Aw come on Elton when are you going make any more songs that rock! I'm serious, as a long time fan you continue to let me down with the same old slow to mid tempo pop for the past ten years. And you're wondering why your latest albums fell off the charts? Enough with the sluggish songs about Aids and New York already! Get on back on the piano and start writing some faster stuff that makes the fans get up and dance!
Love the New Song...The New reconnecting with the Old!! From the "Rocket Club"...We All Cannot wait for the album and the new sounds it will bring~!! XO
Love the New Song...The New reconnecting with the Old!! From the "Rocket Club"...We All Cannot wait for the album and the new sounds it will bring~!! XO
I see that all do not care for this song but I think when we hear Leon joining Elton on the number the song will sound completely different. It is a poignant song about a couple guys getting toward the end. These two have a lot of history together and I'm glad I grew up listening to both of them! I guess that even though I'm older it's never too late...
@Areseesee The song is the song etc. For those that don't like this track, it won't make much difference if Leon joins Elton on it, as the song pretty much lays it cards down. Anyone hate this ballad? Then leave the room. It sounds pleasingly like a song for adults and not passed teenagers sobbing nostalgia. I think that Elton has wanted to write a song like 'Song For You' forever. I wonder if those that hate this song, hate that too? I hope that the album has a looser feel. It's about time.
Any true Elton John fan will know the influence that Leon Russell has had on Elton's career, personally and professionally. This collaboration is long over due and highly anticipated. Can't wait!!!!
We are so thankful to have been able to see it from the front row in GrandRapids, MI, how we were so blessed to receive those tickets from Elton, we'll never know but one thing we do know for sure is "you're never too old to hold somebody"..... It warms my heart to hear it again.
Gosh. I have loved both Sir Elton and Leon for over 40 years------though they are my very favorite musicians, Leon, #1 and Elton ,#2, this song is not what I expected. I wanted more Leon hitting his high notes and both his and Elton's brilliant piano playing. Sorry guys--this one is not your best. You're never too old--but perhaps a tad stale on this one.
This song isn't its boring..............I'm a Fan from Elton John and i love the older songs but this is not Rocket man, Daniel, Your song or the other genius songs....I am sad that such good songs elton not like
LOve It!!!:)

@alreltney, Elton doesn't need your support! Who are you at all!? You are nobody.
007koko007 1 year ago

@mizofan

I see that all do not care for this song but I think when we hear Leon joining Elton on the number the song will sound completely different. It is a poignant song about a couple guys getting toward the end. These two have a lot of history together and I'm glad I grew up listening to both of them! I guess that even though I'm older it's never too late...
Areseesee 1 year ago 2
