seems strange that they are burning the wood, you would think that it could be used to build temporary shelters or shacks. i guess they wanted the smell of smoke to drown out the stench of decay. i was checking out the tectonic maps and anywhere you have a subduction fault under the ocean you have the risk of tsunamis, there are these types of faults all over the world and i dont think any costal area is immune from tsunamis.
