The origins of the bulgarians come neither from any turkic tribes, nor slavic ones. While, obviously there has been a lot of mixing when we are talking about bg genes, it is a fact that the ancient bulgarians play the biggest role. Unfortunately bulgarians dont know a thing about their real predecessors and how far they come from in terms of time and teritory. Not to mention their culture and surprising knowledge.

first the origins of the world "bulgar, ,balgar" are unclear, but most agree that was derived from some proto-turkic word, the river Volga has nothing to do with it, plus the state of Volga-Bulgaria was founded later then Danube-Bulgaria ( predecessor of modern Bulgaria), only thing "turkic" about them was their language and culture, DNA research done on the bones found on burial sites indicates iranian-europoid origin, even the volga-bulgars showed a small percent of people with asiatic descent

We did not from Volga we went there from Old Great Bulgarya between Azov and Black sea. It happened after the deth of Kubrat. His 5 sons separated and one of them went to Volga others crossed the Danube. :)))

Most of today's Bulgarians are basically Thracians. Slavs made up only about one-third of the population at best (they have only about 15% Y-haplogroup R1a).
