Loose adaptation means most elements of the novel are dropped or changed, it doesn't mean its copied. Maybe Hamlets version bores Asians so bad that they needed to change it which has a good result. But either way, Asians are really good when it comes to movies.
This is one hell of a stunning looking movie. The cinematography totally floored me the first time i saw it and i have yet to see another movie with the same level of visual artistry invested into it. Screen compositions, lighting and camera works are almost flawless. The setting and cast very grand and costumes and colour very rich. This is Chinese cinema at it's finest.
@gitgit42 I agree with you, but there is a film that is even better than this one, and that is Curse of the Golden Flower. If you haven't seen it, and if you truly love these kind of movies, I would highly reconmend it.
beautifully & gracefully portrayed, cinematographed, and choreographed! twisted love, hatred, tragedy...how awful! One of great masterpiece movies!!! *^o^*
if this one good, look so good in trailer, or better than cursed of the golden flower. I watch to see it but afraid its ending is so tragedy like cursed of the golden flower. i live in cambodia and cursed of the golden flower become the best selling dvd there for several months but didn't heard of this one before.
Zhang Zi Yi is so old. Every movie that manages to get to Hollywood has her starring in it. Get other female actress. Zhang has the same stupid face, stupid voice, and same boring look in all the costume dramas. I am sick and tired of her!!! There are so many great actresses in Korea and Hong Kong, just not her. She is big time BORING.
One of the best movies ever!!Hollywood movies still sucks because they can only copy movies from asia ( dark water, the ring, Infernal affairs which called in us departed, the grudge and what me really pissed of my sassy girl the remake was a creation of bastards) They als want to make a remake of JSA, Oldboy Hollywood go and fuck yourselff with your stupid amateur no story movies and billion dollars special effects.
totally agree with you .. i was watching the hollywood version on my sassy girl and it totally sucked i didnt even bother to finish it .. it just didnt have the same charm and the actress Elisha Cuthbert totally sucked she wasnt sassy she was trashy...
This movie is a chinese retelling of Hamlet, and there calling it Legend Of The Black Scorpion now. If you want to rent it, it's an exclusive at blockbuster, which means you cant get it at hollywood or what not. just some info for you guys....
i wouldn't say it's a retalling of hamlet, after all, the chinese imperial history held the most betrayal and drama. More than what the europeans can conjure. This may probably actually happened prior to the creation of Hamlet.
The only one being euro-centric is director Feng Xiaogang. Wikipedia- The Banquet (released on DVD in the U.S. as Legend of the Black Scorpion) is a 2006 Chinese wuxia-drama film. Its original Chinese title is Yè Yàn (夜宴), which means "Night Banquet". The film was directed by Feng Xiaogang and stars Zhang Ziyi. It is a loose adaption of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, and features themes of revenge and fate. It is set in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, in 10th-century China.
I hate to have to bitch-slap you, but no one who knows the WORLDWIDE fame of Shakespeare, or his Hamlet would disagree with you about the history of China. But, Pls! tell us Hamlet was a loose retelling of some great Chinese story... and, well, we'd probably have heard of it by now! I'm of Chinese extraction & have NEVER heard of another Hamlet coming out of China. The very writers/producers of this work cite Shakespeare's Hamlet as their inspiration, Not Confucius, or other famous chinese!
Huh? ftw, indeed! Not only have I learned to read - I've also learned to listen; a skill which you would do well to practice as it is quite useful!
You told avalonroad not to be so euro-centric as to say that "BANQUET" was based on "HAMLET." What I replied to you was that THE VERY DIRECTORS OF THE FILM CLAIM THE MOVIE IS BASED ON IT!!!

Okay maybe it's just me... but is anyone else getting tired of Zhang Ziyi? I don't know, I was so disappointed with House of Flying Daggers as well as her role in Hero... she's no longer pretty to me. Okay, maybe it's just me.
The plotline of the movie is very interesting but sometimes...(maybe it's just me) the whole movie seems slow to me. And not to mention there is alot of blood...well maybe alot for me...-.-;

@AfistfulofDollars you´re right but this particular one itself is an adaption of Hamlet, so.

@AfistfulofDollars lol well apparently this movie is a loose adaption of hamlet so if hollywood is copying asia then asia is copying shakespear lol
JacobxMarley 9 months ago
@JacobxMarley not true its a book adaption but with his own touch!! Watch the original asian movies and then the remakes and you will see!!
AfistfulofDollars 9 months ago
@AfistfulofDollars so basically they copied it and changed it a little is what your saying lol

Possibly the best movie of the last decade.
A rich smorgasbörd of colors, tapestries, sounds and cinematography.
The performances are beyond stellar.
The soundtrack is perfection.
Everything about this movie was so well done that you can have absolutely no complaint!!!

Go with God.

No hard feelings ;-)
Just that what you said was ridiculous, in light of that the directors, themselves, cited Hamlet as the inspiration for this tale.
Beautiful movie!
Better than any Western version of Hamlet I've ever seen!!!!!

It makes people think all Asian movies are exactly the same, when each one is special in its own way.
